Holding on to Hope

Altara stood quietly near the windows once again at night.
The death of her father was horrible...but for some reason
Altara felt she should have been more destroyed. Why....why did
it seem familiar to her?

Claudia normally slept quite well after a day full of activity,
but for some reason even after keeping herself busy all day she
couldn't sleep and found herself pacing the halls by night.
She'd made all the arrangements she needed to. Everything was on
track for her to do her part in both the funeral and the
coronation, and there weren't any problems she was aware of. But
the lingering feeling of unease had not gone away as she'd gone
about her duties, and had deepened into a feeling danger loomed.
In this troubled state of mind, she was surprised to find the
princess out of bed, and quietly walked over to join her.
"Princess? Is everything all right?"

"C-Claudia!" Altara gasped in surprise
"I didn't realize you were here!"

"Just...doing a night patrol, your majesty." Claudia said,
smiling slightly. "I didn't mean to startle you."

"Oh, that makes sense" Altara responded with a smile.
"I'm sorry, I'm a little on edge"

"I understand completely, your majesty. I can't imagine what all
this must be like for you." Claudia sighed, looking sympathetic.

"....Claudia, may I tell you a terrible but honest truth?"
Altara asked, looking down.

Terrible but honest? Claudia wondered, but she still nodded
without hesitating.
"Of course, your majesty. You know you can tell me anything."

"...I...predicted my father would die today" Altara muttered

"You mean you felt sure today would be the day?" Claudia
blinked, but assured herself it had nothing to do with the
restlessness she'd felt all day.
"Milady, that's not such a terrible thing to say. Your father
had been sick for a long time, and you were closest to him. It's
not unheard of for close family to feel when such a separation
approaches."
