"Because you've always put being polite first." Floriana said.
"Perhaps for the benefit of the court, I don't know. But I've
always seen it. Biting back what you think in favor of something
nice. Do you think I don't see the way you look at me for saying
what I feel? I don't need the wine to do that."
She'd drunk more than she realized; she was starting to ramble,
but the hostility Floriana had been nursing prickled all the
more at kind words from Altara.

"...Do you dislike me, Miss Sarlo?" Altara askes, calmly but
quietly l.

"You started it," Floriana said, not caring if the retort
sounded childish.
"I could see you didn't trust in me. Was I supposed to like
that?"

"You didn't!" Floriana insisted, shaking the flask. Keep quiet,
don't say anything, that had been Malko's advice, but Malko had
left the castle to do his drinking while Floriana didn't feel
comfortable leaving it, especially not after the lingering fear
she wouldn't be wanted there anymore when Altara assumed the
throne.
"I've seen the way you frown when I'm enjoying myself, or how
you don't come to my study unless I come demand you do! It's not
my fault your lessons haven't gone as planned! But you hold that
against me, don't you?"

"Miss Sarlo, if I didn't trust you, why would I be comfortable
speaking alone with you at night?" Altara asked

"You're the queen now. You have the authority to throw me out
when you feel like it, and we both know it." Floriana said
bitterly, taking another long drink.

"I don't know." Floriana leaned against the wall.
"Why haven't you? This isn't how you speak to your queen."
