Day Before the Coup

It was another beautiful day in the peaceful kingdom of
Rithsten.
The sun beamed over the castle as the day started for many
merchants.
The princess, Altara Rithsten, opened her chamber doors and
walked down the hallway to the throne room.
While she knew her father would be absent due to illness; a
strong face was still needed for her people. After it, it seemed
it would be any day now for her to be the queen.

Tilda was busying herself dusting things off, trying to do a
better job than she usually did. She suppressed a yelp when she
looked up from her work and noticed Altara walking by, quickly
performing the curtsey her stepfather had eventually managed to
teach her.
"Good morning, your ladyship, ma'am!" She said quickly. The last
thing she wanted to do now that she had this job was be rude to
the princess, even by mistake!

"Good morning, Tilda" Altara smiled pleasantly toward her
subordinate.
"How do you fair on this beautiful day?"

"I'm right as rai–ah, doing as well as can be hoped, Your
Grace," Tilda said, returning a pleasant if somewhat nervous
smile.
Talk flowery, don't cuss, mind yer manners, and give her titles.
That's what a lady's maid does with a lady, she reminded
herself. Unfortunately, she didn't remember what specific title
she was supposed to use with the princess who would be queen any
day now, so she was just going through all the ones she could
think of.

"You dont have to be so formal, Tilda" Altara chuckled back.
"No need for your grace or your majesty. Princess Altara is
fine."

Thank the gods, Tilda thought, her relief palpable.
"Thank you, Princess Altara. I'm still gettin' the hang of
castle-talk," she admitted, scratching her head. It hadn't
endeared her to the other maids, that was for sure.

comfortable and happy; I will be as well"

"That's very kind of you, Princess Altara," Tilda said
gratefully. She looked at her duster, then at Altara.
"Erm, is there anything I can do to help you, Princess?" She
asked. "I was just dusting earlier, but my job's to help you
out, right?"

like to tend to them first before anything"

"I don't know of anybody being wounded, but I could go check for
you!" Tilda offered, eager to be helpful.
