Bringing the conversation back here where it belongs:
This is the thread that I created and the responses I got -
these users are some of the most vocal and I do find them to be
represntative of most user's views in general. Level-headed,
practical, realistic:

Top conclusions that I have based on the conversation (and
knowing the history of what we had isseus with in the past):
1) The quote structure. I don't know if this is possible, but if
older quotes in a chain (we are sometimes quoting 10 deep) could
be "collapsed" and able to be expanded when desired. Or a way to
make it easier to quote only the last 2-3 responses. Many people
try to edit and cut out the oldest stuff in the middle but it
often results in having missed a character somewhere and then
things don't work right.
1b) This could also solve the primary problem that we had with
someone we ultimately had to ban. The ignore function has a
significant flaw in that quoted posts reveal the ignored
person's words, they are no longer "collapsed" and not visible
to the user who has them on ignore.
2) Color/contrast setup. As previously mentioned, a number of my
users are over 50, and there's some declining eyesight going on.
If it were possible for people to individually adjust their
settings within the overall forum theme to be "high contrast"
and "normal", I think that helps a lot.
3) Spoiler button: There's a react button in that you have to
"react" to a post in order for it to show up, but we know that
the spoiler coding works - so why not have a spoiler button as
one of the easy formatting options?
4) I understand that you wanted a cleaner look/layout, but I
think that in doing so — you've "hidden" some of the
buttons/features that people actually use the most.
• Recent unread topics
• Show who quoted my posts
So bringing those back front and center in this version would
probably make an easier sell of the other stuff that's in the
dropdown under the username now.
And you've got duplicate ways to get to things. If you have a
big search field in the upper right corner, you don't need it in
the topline menubar.
Likewise - just about everything under "profile" is under the
username dropdown menu here. And the mentions and alerts are
duplicating the same function, no? So you could get rid of the
Search and Profile access from the topline menu. If anything, I
would just leave a link for "my bookmarks" there as part of the
front and center easy access while still having a cleaner
overall setup.
Once those pieces are in place, it would be easier to see what
else could be finessed.

Thanks for this. Will review and see what can be done.
