Merging threads

I cannot merge threads. it asks me for thread ID and when I
enter the thread it says its invalid. I tried hitting go on the
drop down menu to the help desk where the thread I located but
nothing happens

Sorry - I'm new to all this, having just taken over a deceased
friend's music forum. Please could you give me a point-by-point
"idiot's guide" as to how to merge threads?
