The creative director on Assassin’s Creed Unity has revealed
that the upcoming French Revolution-based stealth-action title
was ‘impossible’ to achieve on last-generation hardware.
Speaking during an interview with Examiner (via GamePur), Alex
Amancio was most emphatic that the development team was not able
to consider making Unity a cross-generation title.
“We could not have built this game on cross-gen. Impossible," he
said. "I’ll give you one example of why: the crowd. It’s not
aesthetic, it’s a gameplay element, it reacts to you, there’s
faction in there you can hide with and more. We couldn’t make
this game without a crowd and [last]-gen would not allow us to
have crowds even remotely close to what we have.
“The visuals, the city is large, it’s a one to one scale. We
used to be on about a two-thirds scale, like the Coliseum is on
a third scale in Brotherhood. Everything is to scale in Unity,
which means we can have seamless interiors. We now have the raw
memory and power to do that.
"Unity would not have been possible on [last]-gen. Since our
main goal was to set the foundation for a new cycle of
Assassin’s Creed, we couldn’t afford to compromise,” he added.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is due out in November on PlayStation 4,
PC, and Xbox One alongside the last-gen offering, Assassin’s
Creed Rogue.
