It's dark.
I open my eyes look around. For the first few seconds, my sight
struggles to adjust to the darkness as I stand and rub my head.
I start to see faces, faces of unfamiliar people. Some carry
weapons, some have pets, and some just stand there, immobile.
They all stare at me.
I'm so confused.
No one speaks for the first few minutes of my awakening. I begin
to wonder how long I've been asleep, if you could call it that,
and how I got here. I search for answers in the eyes of my
company. None surface. At this point, I'm almost begging one of
them to speak, but on a subconscious level I know I must be the
one to break the silence; I don't want to admit it.
They want me to speak.
"H-hello?" I oblige. They take in my greeting, seem to analyze
it. I must have shown fear. Their expressions do not change. I
must say more. I barely muster the strength to whisper, "Who are
you?"
The crowd parts.
An old man with a pet, a white wolf, steps through the path and
stand in front of me. He examines me for a moment before licking
his lips in preparation to speak.
"Young girl," he says in a soft but dignified voice, "we all
have stories to tell. Yours just began." Lightning marks his
words, followed by the crash of thunder to accent the mood.
It began to rain. The storm had begun.
