Steve listens closely as Tony agrees that
Steve's not a fool, saying that he's here because he wants to...
explain and... apologize. Then he goes on to say that it's just
him and that there is no one listening in or tracking him.
Steve considers this, wondering if it's just some sort of trap.
He's afraid to trust Tony again after last time, and he doesn't
really want to sit around and listen to his apologizes, but what
he does want, is an explanation. He wants to know if Tony ever
did give a damn about him, and if he did, then why did he betray
him in such a way? These are things he needs to know, and the
only way he can know them is if he keeps Tony here and listens
to what he has to say. He doesn't want to hate Tony, and he
certainly doesn't want to imagine all the ways he can kill him
every time he sees him.
"You better not be lying," he warns Tony after some silence,
dragging the knife across Tony's neck, but not piercing any
skin. He slowly slides his hand down Tony's body, and finds his
wrist, grabbing it and holding onto it tight as he pulls his
knife away and drags Tony with him back up to the stage, able to
see much better than average people in the dark. Once they're on
the stage, he finds the switch for the stage lights, and turns
them on, the whole place lighting up just about, revealing his
very unshaven, very unkempt self with just a few bloodstains on
his shirt. He keeps his knife clutched in his hand, though,
knowing that if Stark tires to pull anything, he can always aim
for the kill.
Then, Steve lowers himself back down to the ground,
criss-crossing his legs again like a kid and looking up at Tony,
silently beckoning him to join him on the ground before he
starts explaining.

Tony closes his eyes as Steve warns him against lying,
dragging the knife across his throat. He feels like he's two
second away from being stabbed to death. But Steve doesn't kill
him -- he just grabs him by the wrist and drags him over to what
Tony supposes is the stage, but he can't tell until Steve turns
on the light, revealing both the room and himself. He looks...
kind of awful, but Tony keep that thought to himself. Knife
still in hand, Steve sits down on the floor and motions for Tony
to do the same.
Tony stares at him, mouth a little open in what is possibly
shock. [b]"You live here?" he asks, turning around to stares at
the seats layered row by row. He's still not over the fact that
Steve doesn't actually stay in places without heating or air
conditioning, or anything. "This place looks like it's about
three seconds away from collapsing on itself."

Steve watches Tony as his mouth falls open,
staring at the theater, turning to look at all the seats. He
asks if he lives here, and Steve manages a scoff, wondering
where on earth Tony thought he lived. Honestly, it's not like he
can rent an apartment room or anything, he's a "murderer." He
has to stay in hiding, meaning he practically lives in any
abandoned and non-hobo infested building there is. He especially
likes the ones in Brooklyn, though, because, you know, it's
where he grew up. Tony also points out that the place looks like
it's going to collapse in three seconds.
"Better make this explanation fast, then," he snaps, ignoring
Tony's first question. He doesn't want to casually chat with
Tony until he hears a perfectly logical explanation to what he
did that he actually likes. If he doesn't hear something like
that then, well, most likely things won't end well for Stark
because Steve is pretty angry at him, and you don't want to get
on his bad side, especially after he has just come back from a
killing spree.

Tony's heart drops a little as Steve tells him to make
his explanation fast, making it obvious that he's not here for
small talk. Okay, Tony can... understand that. He has to
remember that he's lucky he's not dead, really. Slowly, he turns
back around to face Steve, and sits down across from him,
drawing his knees up and looping his arms around them.
[b]"Fury convinced me it was the right thing to do," he says
slowly, not wanting to trip over his words or have to clarify
anything. "I knew... that you wouldn't like it, but they'd
already tried peaceful capture and it wasn't working and I
thought, I thought SHIELD could help you. I thought I could
overlook you being mad at me for a while if there were some way
you could get yourself under control. But I didn't expect--" to
feel anything, "-- I didn't expect... what you said about me.
And when I thought about it, I realized that your security was a
lot more important to me than... than everything else. I didn't
want to push you into something you didn't want to do. But I
realized that too late." He runs a hand over his face and sighs,
not even sure if that's adequate enough to keep himself alive.
"I'm sorry that I... I broke your trust, and I feel really...
really sh*tty about it, but I don't really know how to make it
up to you."

Tony sits, and Steve gets ready to listen to
Tony's explanation. And what an explanation it was. Tony
basically tells him that the whole thing had been Fury's idea
(no surprise there) and that Tony though it would actually help
him, but he didn't expect what Steve had said about him, calling
him perfect, and that he was going to warn him, but it had been
too late. Then Tony finishes it all up with a decent apology,
saying he doesn't know how to make it all up to him.
Steve sits quietly, thinking about Tony's explanation, and
excepting it right away before moving on to the "making up"
thing. Well, Steve can think of a few ways Tony could make all
this up to him, but he knows that none of them can be done right
now. He doesn't want to use Tony or take advantage of him
because he's really not that kind of person. In fact, he has
only been kissed twice, and still is a virgin, so yeah, he's not
going to ask Tony for anything unreasonable.
"Just promise me this," he decides, setting his knife down.
"Promise me that it won't happen again," he says, tracing his
palm with a finger, staring into Tony's eyes. He really can't
afford to have it happen again. He had been doing so good when
he and Tony had been... friends? And he doesn't have many places
to run to, so he would prefer it if he didn't have to relocate.

Tony waits, watching Steve's face for any sign of
change. He hadn't really planned on dying, and, you know,
doesn't really want to, so he's hoping for the best here, which
probably doesn't include anything more than Steve forgiving him,
but, hey, that's okay. It'll take time. Finally, Steve sets his
knife down, asking Tony to promise him it won't happen again,
looking right at him. Steve seems like he doesn't want to kill
Tony either, which is a very, very good thing.
[b]"It won't," Tony says, without hesitation. "I'll do
everything in my power to make sure it won't. Fury won't touch
you again, nobody will get to you. I promise." He doesn't know
when Steve became so important -- part of him reasons that he's
saving other people's lives, too, while another part tells him
that Steve is too good a person to go to waste. And this, here,
sitting in an abandoned theater -- that's waste. But Tony wants
to change that.

Tony answers Steve right away, promising him
that this won't happen again, that he'll do everything in his
power to keep Fury and SHIELD away, and the man is filled with
so much conviction... Steve feels breathless again. He really
means it. He really, truly means that he'll try to keep this
from happening again, and before he knows what he's doing, he's
reaching forward and pulling Tony in for a hug, holding onto him
tightly. It's been years since he has held someone like this,
and it feels good and warm and comforting. He doesn't have to
keep running and hiding alone now because Tony's on his side.
"Thank you," Steve whispers before pulling away, blushing
lightly as he sits back. "But Tony...why do you care about me?"
he asks quietly, looking down like he's ashamed for asking such
a question. "You save people, and all I do is hurt them. You
work for SHIELD, but I go against them. You shouldn't care about
me, and you certainly shouldn't like me... No one else does, at
least," he explains, holding onto his feet and rocking back and
forth slightly, staring at the stage. Why should Tony like him?
They're just about complete opposites, yet Tony seems to
actually care for him. Why? Why is that?

Tony very nearly yelps as Steve suddenly pulls him
forward, but his brief panic is overtaken by something like
confusion when Steve just wraps his arms around him. A hug.
Steve is giving Tony a hug -- and a very genuine one at that.
Tony pauses for a moment before he places a tentative hand on
Steve's side, his hugging significantly less enthusiastic, but
he's not rejecting Steve, or anything. Steve thanks him as he
pulls away, looking thoroughly embarrassed, and asks,
sheepishly, why Tony cares about him. He points out that Tony
saves people and he hurts them, that Tony works for SHIELD and
he doesn't, that nobody else cares, and that Tony shouldn't.
Tony frowns -- the reason he cares about Steve is one he's not
very keen to share with anybody. But, he supposes, if the person
he cares about is the one he's telling, then it's okay.
Tony looks at Steve, who looks so lost, (always, so lost) and
sighs. [b]"I know what it's like to be scared," Tony says
gently. "I used to make weapons. They got in the wrong hands,
and hurt a lot of people. I got locked in a cave for three
months and had some shrapnel dug out of my chest. Back then, I
was scared. Everybody was an enemy. By the time I got back, I
still didn't know who I could trust. But there was one guy in
there, a good guy, who kept me sane. I couldn't have escaped
without him. He knew that I was good, too, even with all the
mistakes I'd made." He's getting off track -- but, hey, he
figures, he knows a lot about Steve, but Steve obviously doesn't
know a lot about him. It's only fair. "You didn't always hurt
people," Tony continues, reminding Steve. "I read your file.
Your track record was pretty impressive before you went under.
You saved nearly two hundred men in one night." Tony reaches
forward, clasping a hand over Steve shoulder and squeezing
slightly. "Don't tell me who I shouldn't like. You're not evil,
Steve. You're scared and you're lonely and it's hard to get
everything back when it feel like the world's against you but --
it can happen. Just look at me. I'm doing pretty okay, aren't
I?" he smiles a little, not sure if anything he says will have
any effect on Steve, but, it's really all he's got, so he hopes
it's good enough.

Steve has to admit that he doesn't really
expect an answer from Tony, so when the man starts to speak so
gently, saying that he knows what it's like to be scared, Steve
looks up and listens. Tony tells him a story, a story of his
past about how he used to make weapons before being captured and
locked in a cave for months, shrapnel having to be dug out of
his chest. Steve glances at the glowing circle in the center of
Tony's chest, blinks, and then continues to listen as Tony tells
him about a man he met who helped him and saw that he was good
through all the mistakes he has made. It makes Steve feel...
something as he listens to the story. Something a little more
strong than comfort... and Steve likes it, but then again, he's
a bit afraid of it. It's all warm and... wonderful... and it
fills his heart every time he looks at Tony.
Steve ignores this feeling as Tony suddenly starts talking about
him, saying that he didn't always hurt people, and that he read
his file. He also goes to point out how he nearly saved two
hundred men in one night. Yeah, those really were the days...
the days he can never get back. Then Tony clasps his hand over
his shoulder, and Steve jumps slightly, staring down at the
hand, warmth consuming him in that area. Tony tells him not to
tell him who he shouldn't like, that he's not evil, that he's...
scared... and lonely and-- and that he can get everything back,
and how does he know all of this? How does he know that he can
get everything back? He says it like... like it's so simple.
Steve looks up at Tony when told to, and he can swear that his
heart is melting as Tony smiles. This... this can't be
happening, can it? But then again, Tony seems to be the only one
who gets him and wants to help him. But... but this can't happen
so fast, can it? Can it? He's reaching out, about to touch
Tony's cheek before he realizes what's happening, and pulls
away. Sh*t, this is happening, and it can't because he's
dangerous. This can't ever happen... ever.
"You need to go," Steve murmurs, regretting his words so much,
but knowing that Tony does need to leave before Steve messes up
everything. He's staring at Tony's lips, and then his eyes
before he finally turns away.
He can't be falling in love.

Tony eyes Steve's hand as it raises, reaching for his

reprimanded for it. Tony's eyes flicker to his face for any sign
of expression, but the only thing he receives is an invitation
to leave. Tony frowns -- what had he said wrong? Sure, he's not
the smartest guy when it comes to feeling and things, but he's
pretty sure he didn't mess this up.
[b]"C'mon, Rogers," he says quietly, giving Steve a wavering
smile. "I just got here." He doesn't know if it's because of
something he said or if it's because Steve just doesn't like
company. In any case, Tony doesn't want to leave him yet -- he
looks battered and tired and more than a little thinly worn.
From where he's sitting now, Steve truly looks like a man
without a place to go, and that's -- he should have something
better than that, Tony thinks.
