Steve freezes as Tony suddenly grabs his arm,
saying his name. His first name, and even when exasperated, his
first name sounds good on Tony's lips. He should say it more,
much more. However, Tony immediately loosens his grip on Steve's
arm, but Steve only blinks, not really freaking out about Tony's
sudden reaction because he trusts Tony. The man saves lives
after all, right? Everyone seems to love him. Steve remembers
when that used to be him, saving lives, being the man everyone
new and loved, being the poster boy of America. It seems so long
ago...
Steve snaps out of his train of thought when Tony asks how he
got to him so fast. Carefully, Steve removes his arm from Tony's
hand, focusing way too much on the warmth his touch brings to
his body. "There's a bench across the street from where you
were. It's a nice place to sit and think and watch the world go
by. Plus there's a bakery nearby, I like to smell the fresh
bread, reminds me of the olden days," he explains, cleaning the
last bit of Tony's hand with the cotton ball. "Sorry if I
startled you." He sets the tweezers and cotton ball on the desk
and walks slowly back over to Tony, looking down at the man.
"Are you alright?" he asks again, softly, even sweetly.

Fury continues to listen into the
conversation between Stark and Rogers as they travel to Steve's
hideout. Stark sounds frustrated about something, asking how
Rogers got to him so fast. Fury keeps a straight face on,
listening to Rogers reply about smelling the fresh bread at a
bakery that reminds him of the old days. Fury keeps that
information stored in his brain, locking it away with the other
things he knows about the present Rogers and if he really does
want things to go back to the way they were. If he really wants
to be Captain America again.
Then Rogers asks if Stark's alright again, and Fury can tell
right away from the tone in his voice that he truly does care a
lot for Stark, even though they have only "formally" met twice.
He knows Rogers can't be in love with Stark, but perhaps it was
a crush... or an obsession. Either way, he knew their plan would
be affective.
"Stark, we're almost to your current location," Fury warns him,
wanting him to put the plan into action as soon as he
can.

Steve slowly starts to explain himself, telling Tony
about a bench and a bakery and the olden days, jeez, he really
is from the forties. Cleaning Tony's hand a little more, he
apologizes for startling him, and, getting up to put his things
away, returns shortly, asking again if Tony's okay. It's then
that Tony hears Fury's voice in his ear, as well, saying that
the team is close. Tony almost curses out loud -- he hadn't
expected it to be this soon. He had hoped there was some way he
could build up to this, or something. Forgetting the fact that
this is a really sh*tty thing to do -- I mean, SHIELD can help
Steve, he could get better, with them -- Tony also, really, has
no idea where to begin.
[b]"I'm okay," Tony reassures Steve, getting up himself. God,
okay, how would he seduce Pepper? Well, good champagne, for
starters, and some candlelit dinner to persuade her, but he
hadn't really come that prepared for this. He needs some way to
distract Steve, though, and conversation isn't gonna cut it --
Tony would bet that Steve's amplified senses include his
hearing. No, he needs to be thoroughly distracted if this is
actually going to work. "Just--" Tony steps closer suddenly,
getting in Steve's space a little. Ugh, okay, that had felt
awkward. He reaches forward, tentatively, like he's going for
Steve's hand, but wraps his fingers around Steve's wrist
instead, just because Steve hadn't really minded being touched
before. Not so intimate. A little more natural than the step had
been. "Why do you care so much? I know you said you liked me,
but--" he looks up through his lashes, like how he would do if
he were too busy looking at other parts of Steve's body to lift
his head entirely, and licks his lips (this will never work). "I
don't really understand why that is, either."

Steve breaks out into a smile when Tony
finally says that he's okay. Then, suddenly, he's standing up
and then... stepping closer. Steve's breath catches in his
throat due to Tony's proximity, close enough to... to... to? He
feels warm fingers wrap around his wrist, and he glances down,
seeing that they're Tony's fingers. What's going on? Tony starts
speaking again, asking why he cares so much, looking up at him,
taking his breath away completely. He's so... flawless. More
flawless than Steve can ever hope to be. And then he says he
doesn't understand why he likes him.
Steve laughs, a little shaky, quiet laugh, looking at Tony's
face up and down. "I care because you seem to care about me," he
says, hesitant to touch the man in front of him just in case he
was getting the wrong read on things. "And I like you
because..." Steve stops, swallowing hard, staring into Tony's
eyes and glancing at his lips. "I think you're perfect," he
admits, reaching up as if to touch Tony's face, but lowering it
before he does so. In all honesty, he still sees Tony as an
angel, and, and for some reason, he just wants to lean forward
and...
He hasn't wanted anything like this in a long, long time, and
he's a little scared. Does Tony actually want this? Is this
really what he thinks it is? Something deep within him hopes it
is, that part of him that craves love. Love is something he
hasn't received in a long time.

Tony hadn't really meant to be so involved in what he
was saying, but he finds himself hanging on Steve's every word,
waiting to hear the answer to the questions he'd thought of off
the top of his head. Steve tells Tony that he cares because Tony
does, and that he likes Tony so much because he's... perfect.
Tony doesn't miss the glance Steve gives his lips, either, nor
the hand that reaches almost longingly form his face before
dropping, and it all makes his eyes soften a tad, not for acting
purposes but because he genuinely thinks his heart may be
melting a little.
[b]"Oh," he says quietly, his expression falling a little. He
hadn't expected that, and certainly hadn't expected Steve to say
it with such conviction. But he -- he means that, Tony can tell.
"Well, you're not so bad yourself," he replies, with the
gentlest of smiles, and thinks he might mean it, thinks that
maybe Steve is a lot better of a person that he would have
thought possible, for what he's done.
He frowns again when he realizes that he can't -- can't do this.
Steve is genuinely kind, and he trusts Tony, and he's got some
innocent, childish wonder about him that Tony can't just strip
away. This is wrong, no matter what Fury has to say about it.
"Steve," Tony says, a little desperately, because he doesn't
know how much longer he'll have before SHIELD bursts in. "I'm
sorry, we have to--" And apparently he has no time at all,
because at that moment the door gets kicked in and there's
yelling and guns coccking and Tony doesn't think he's felt lower
in his life.

It doesn't even have to be love, it can just
be a crush. Anything. Steve would take anything Tony could offer
him, because he doesn't necessarily love Tony, he just... cares
for him deeply, wants to stay with him for as long as he can,
and wants to share all his secrets with him. Plus he wants to
kiss him, and give Tony anything else he may want. All Steve
really knows is that he wants things... nice things.
Tony's expression falls before offering him a gentle smile,
saying he's not so bad himself, and Steve lets out a quiet, calm
laugh, surprised at how much kindness Tony's has shown towards
him. He has killed people, so many people, and yet, Tony's
compassionate towards him, and Steve feels a little pang in his
chest, and he starts to leans forward before Tony says his name,
saying they have to--
The door gets kicked down behind them, and Steve grabs Tony's
wrist and swings around, thinking a gang or something much worse
has broken in to try and claim Steve's territory, or pay him off
to kill someone. However, what he sees is much worse. What he
sees are SHIELD agents, all their guns pointed at him, surround
him, and Nick Fury coming out and walking up to him.
Steve stares, eyes narrowing. How did they find him? The only
way they could've known he was here is if...
"Nice work, Stark," says Fury, no weapon in his hands.
Steve's head turns to Tony in a flash, hate and betrayal burning
in his eyes. Tony did this to him. Tony lied to him and messed
with his damn feelings!
"You lied to me..." Steve hisses, the grip on Tony's wrist
tightening, hands shaking. "All this time you were just...
playing me. You never meant anything..."
"Rogers, let go of Stark, we're here to help you," says Fury,
slowly reaching for his gun, feeling the tension rising.
Steve has been betrayed, and you do not want to mess with him,
especially by messing with his feelings. He has lost so much,
and this time, he never even had anything to gain. He should
have known better. He should've known better than to trust
someone who is with SHIELD.
"I don't need you help!" Steve yells, slinging Tony into some
agents, causing them to fall to the ground, dropping their
weapons. "You've used me enough!" he continues, stalking up to
Fury, some agents stepping closer to Steve, guns ready to fire.
"Lies! That's all you have to offer me is lies!" Fury pulls out
his gun, and Steve knocks it out of his hand. An agent starts to
fire, but Fury holds up his hand, telling his men to hold back.
"Rogers, you need to stop running. This isn't you. You haven't
lost everything."
Steve hands fly up to his hair, fingers knotting tightly in it,
enough to make him bleed. "Yes I have! he shouts. "Yes I have,
and there's nothing you can do about it! You can't make me
better, Fury, I'm sick!" he practically moans, panic rising
throughout him along with anger.
"Rogers--"
"Shut up!" Steve shouts, backing up towards his desk covered
with weapons. "Shut up, shut up, and take that filthy b*stard
with you!" he continues, pointing to Tony. Agents start
approaching him, and Steve quickly reaches back for his gun,
just to have his hand shot. He cries out in pain and lunges
forward, grabbing the agent who shot him and quickly snapping
his neck.
"Move in!" Fury orders, panic seeming to be filling him up too.
all the agents start to surround him again, closing in on him,
and Steve's glaring at them with such hatred and despair before
glancing at Tony, the darkest of looks upon his face as another
agent shoots him in the side.

The first thing Steve tries to do is protect him,
grabbing his wrist and stepping out so Tony is behind him, away
from what he considers danger. Tony tries to say something else,
apologize again, maybe, because he just wants Steve to
understand why he's doing this, why it was important, but Fury's
telling him nice work and Steve turns around to glare at him
with so much hatred that Tony knows it won't matter to try.
Steve's hand tightens on his wrist, enough for the pressure to
become painful, and Tony takes a step back, his eyes widening,
knowing that Steve could crack the bones in his hand without
even trying. But Steve throws him into some agents, instead, and
Tony can tell that he's starting to panic, getting louder and
more erratic. It's his fault, Tony knows, he shouldn't have done
this in the first place, but he was stupid, and foolish to
believe that this could work out any other way than badly.
Then, suddenly, Steve's snapped an agent's neck with his bare
hands, and people are moving in, their guns raised. Tony knows
that they won't hurt Steve, than they're tranquilizers, but in
the time it would take for the drugs to take effect Steve could
have already killed too many people. But they're shooting
anyways, and Tony watches, horrified, as Steve, panicked and
wild, reacts immediately, mowing through several agents in
nothing more than a second.
Tony can't do this -- he can't watch this and know that these
people could die because of what he did. They're still shooting
Steve, though, and he's not down yet, he's still fighting, he
doesn't even seem affected.
[b]"Steve," Tony says desperately, and he doesn't exactly know
what compels him to do it, but he lunges forward, past the
agents, and grabs Steve's arm. "Steve, you have to stop, please,
just--" he doesn't know what else to say, but maybe if he could
grab Steve's attention, do something, then he could be of some
use.

Steve cries out again and clutches at his
side before lunging towards the other agent who shot him,
twisting their arm, a loud crack echoing through the room as it
breaks. The agent still tries to defend himself, about to hit
Steve with their other hand before he grabs it too and does the
same thing, using the broken arm to throw them against the
opposite wall. Then another agent grabs him, then another, and
other, and before you know it, agents are dropping like flies,
most of them just badly injured, others... well... you know.
Suddenly, Tony's saying his name and grabbing his arm, and Steve
still wishes he didn't have this weird feeling in his chest
every time he looks at him, but he does. However, the feelings
are disguised by his rage, beyond enraged for what Tony did to
him. Steve grabs his throat, and pushes him against the wall,
not exactly strangling him, but holding him firmly against the
wall.
"I trusted you," he grows, getting close to Tony's face, staring
deep into his eyes. "I thought you were an angel, but now I see
that you're just as bad as them all," he says, referring to
SHIELD and just about the rest of the world. He's about to say
something else, but then he feels something lodge into his
shoulder, and looks to see that it's a needle, a needle held by
Fury who's injecting something into him. Steve lets Tony go just
in time to be stabbed with another needle, arms wrapping around
his neck, another needle, then another. He realizes that they're
tranquilizers and he starts to feel a little more vulnerable,
but he's also panicking again, and the adrenaline is rushing
through his veins.
Two more needles are jabbed into him before he takes his arm and
swings around, knocking everyone down before Fury grabs his arm,
using all his strength just to keep Steve there.
"Listen to me, you're not sick, Rogers, just broken, and you can
be fixed!" Fury tires, but Steve's hardly listening anymore. He
doesn't want anything SHIELD has to offer anymore. He' done with
their little tricks.
Steve hits Fury in the chest and then face before he's out,
running up the stairs, a few agents scrambling after him. He
runs as fast as his legs will carry him, which is faster than
anyone around, and manages to make it out onto the streets,
pushing people down, desperate to make it to another one of his
hideouts.
That's it, then. He's back to the way he used to be, just a
murderer with no place to go and nothing else to do.

Tony feels his back hit the wall, and Rogers' hand push
firmly against his throat, his voice low and threatening as he
tells Tony he's just as bad as everyone else. Tony is paralyzed
with what he thinks is fear, half-expecting Steve to strangle
him right there and then, but Fury appears again and starts
jabbing needles into Steve. He escapes in a matter of seconds,
leaving Tony wide-eyed, rubbing his throat, staring at the
agents on the ground who won't be getting up.
[b]"Good plan," Tony say dryly to Fury. "Really, really good
plan." He's already walking out. "Next time you ask me to do
something like that, be prepared for a broken nose."
* * *
That night, Pepper spots the bruises on his back and wrist and
next, and Tony has to tentatively explain what happens. He likes
out the part about trying to distract Steve, about how Steve had
called him perfect, but he paint a good enough picture that she
doesn't ask anymore questions than she's supposed to. It's just
to protect her, Tony assures himself. He doesn't want her
getting worked up over a stupid mission. And he doesn't want her
to doesn't want her to pity him if he tells her how terribly
guilty her feels.
* * *
Rogers starts killing again, his brief streak of non-violence
over. Tony can tell, both from the violence of the killings the
looks everyone's shooting him, that it's mainly his fault.
Villains are still rampaging and cleanup is still happening, but
it all kind of dims in comparison to the guilt Tony feels. He
wants to fix this -- he just doesn't know how.
Until he does.
* * *
They have traffic cameras, and facial recognition software, and
eye witnesses, and, still, they can't map out a pattern. Steve
moves around a lot, and doesn't let anybody get a lead on him.
Tony doesn't care how long it takes for him to slip up, and give
them a hint. He'll wait years if he has to. If Rogers won't talk
to him, Tony's just gonna have to let himself in and do the
talking himself.
* * *
Sunday, August 26th
They've wasted too much time and resources for this to be a
flop. This time, Tony will find him. He'll force the apology
onto Steve, no matter how much he doesn't want to hear it or how
stupid Fury tells him this whole this is.
(This is really not the best use of him time. He doesn't really
care.)
No earpieces this time, Tony had ruled. No trackers. Nothing
that Steve's not familiar with, nothing he doesn't trust.
(By that logic, shouldn't Tony have lost the privilege to be
around him a month ago?)
He's in a t-shirt and jeans, nothing fancy. No pockets to
conceal anything in. He had kind of debated about punching
himself in the face to look a little more vulnerable, but
thought it be a little grandeur. Although, maybe that would be
fitting. He is about to enter Steve's latest home: an abandoned
theater, on 46th Street in Brooklyn. Tony's really hoping he
doesn't step on any dead bodies. He's also hoping he doesn't die
a terrible, bloody death. Both options seem likely.
He opens the doors, and is basically plunged into darkness the
moment he lets them close. The muted light of the arc reactor
through his shirt grants him a little reprieve from the black,
but not much. There's got to be some lights working in this
place, otherwise Tony doesn't think Steve would stay here. All
he knows is it's creepy as hell.
Tony walks forward a little, feeling around for openings and
hallways. "This is really roomy, Rogers," Tony says, hoping that
he's not talking to nothing. Though he can't see all of it, he
knows that the space is enormous -- his voice echoes back and
forth on the walls.

Steve's hair falls in his face as he sits
criss-cross on the destroyed stage of his theater, playing with
his knife. He just got through dragging some bodies down to the
basement, their blood leaving a trail from the front door. It's
dark, but lately he can care less because now darkness is his
friend. He can hide in darkness, never be found, be alone
forever and ever till the day he dies. It's not the best plan,
but Steve's at least not against it. He's going to be alone
forever whether he likes it or not because once you think you
have found someone, you realize it has just all been a lie.
Steve chuckles darkly, almost hysterically as it echoes through
the empty theater, but soon afterwards, the door opens, and
light beams through. Steve freezes, holding his knife still in
his hands as he looks up and sees a glowing blue light. A
familiar glowing blue light... that's a circle with a little
triangle in the center. It's Tony. Tony is here, and sure
enough, his voice comes echoing through, saying the place is
roomy.
Steve stays quiet, but picks up a bit of debris and tosses it
towards the right side of the theater, making it sound like he's
wondering around over at the seats. Quickly, he moves, stepping
softly off the stage and moving to the left side of the theater,
wanting to make it behind Tony. He throws another rock towards
the stage he just came from, trying to throw Tony off course.
This goes on for about a minute before he is finally behind
Tony, knife in his hands. It was a huge mistake for him to come
here, especially since Steve's biggest question for a month has
been whether or not he wants to kill the man. He still hasn't
really come up with an answer.
Swiftly, he lunges forward, wrapping an arm around Tony's waist
from behind, pulling him close and holding his knife up to
Tony's neck. "Why are you here, Stark?" he growls, his hot
breath dancing across Tony's skin. "Here to mess with me again?
To trick me? To lie to me?" he hisses into Tony's ear, the
strange feelings in his chest arising again, but he pushes them
to the side. "It's not going to work this time, Stark. I'm not a
fool."

Tony doesn't get a response -- he's wondering if this is
another dead end before he hears a clatter echo through the
chamber, and, he would bet that's Steve. If it's not... well,
then Tony's possibly stumbled across another murderous
psychopath. There's an evac team nearby, but Tony doesn't know
when or if they're coming in. The general rule was that if he's
no back in half an hour, come looking for him. For that reason,
Tony really hopes he's not in here for half an hour.
Another noise lets Tony knows the direction Steve's heading, and
he wonders over slowly, trying not to bump into seat. It's...
weird. The noises are loud, forceful, they sound almost
deliberate. Does Steve want Tony to find him?
Maybe he's trying to mislead you, his brain chimes in, and Tony
tenses, preparing to turn, but at that moment what feels akin to
a band of steel wraps around his waist and pulls him against a
very large, solid, warm wall of muscle. Tony's breath hitches,
and he barely stops himself from shouting, only keeping from
doing so out of fear when the cool edge of a blade presses
against his throat. Rogers is growling in his ear, then, asking
why he's here, that anything he tried before won't work, that
he's not a fool. Tony tries very hard to breathe, but if feels a
little like there's a rock caught in his throat.
[b]"I know," Tony says, almost whispering, his fists clenched at
his sides. "I know you're not. I want to explain, I want--" He
wants Steve to stop hating him. He doesn't recall ever caring
about people hating him before, but for some reason, Steve
matters. "I want to apologize. It's just me, here. Nobody
watching, no one listening in. You and me. That's it."
