Steve listens as Bruce tells him that things could fall
into place, setting down the salt shaker, and telling him that
what he and Stark are doing could lead to more problems and he
needs to just follow his heart. Well, that's basically what he
says. And then Bruce reminds him that the road to hell is paved
with good intentions, leaving right after that.
Steve stares at the spot Bruce had been sitting, surprised that
the man just sort of left him hanging. He know Bruce is right,
and he does want to fix things with Tony, but he doesn't know
how because... because Stark has taken so much away from him and
everyone, and he is giving hardly anything back. How is he
suppose to forgive him for everything he has done? For Fury, for
Bucky, for all the innocent people and families? Their jobs are
to save lives, and all Tony has been doing lately is destroying
them. He can't find a way to forgive him. Not yet, at least.
It's around that time that Sharon arrives, taking Bruce's seat
and sliding his salad back over to him. "Eat," she reminds him,
food before her as well. It takes awhile for him to respond, but
when he does, he just simply nods.

"This dilemma doesn't seem very fixable," says the
first member of the Council, doubtfully.
"Yes," Tony says, for the hundredth time, "Yes, I know. But I'll
find away. If I can just convince Rogers to--"
"The Commander doesn't seem like he's very willing to listen to
anything you have to say," says another. Tony swallows. If it's
gotten as far as the Council, it's already bad. "Are you
prepared to handle the fallout of all this, Director?"
"Yes," Tony says automatically. His hands are shaking.
"Then do what you have to do, and do it quickly. The world can't
afford to have its heroes divided." The screen cuts off, and
Tony covers his face, trying to breathe. It's not everyone
that's divided. It's just Tony. When all of your teammates are
on somebody else's side, it ceases to become a divide. It's a
mutiny, now. They don't want Tony around, and Tony-- well, he's
starting to think he doesn't really want himself around, either.

The next day, Steve waits at the landing dock on the
Helicarrier, looking towards the skies. He always has to wait
awhile before he finally sees what he has been waiting for,
zooming through the skies like a bird, big and gray, making it's
way closer to the Helicarrier. Finally, he's perfectly in view,
taking only a few more seconds before he's landing in front of
Steve, closing his wings.
"Long time no see, Commander," says Sam, taking off his goggles,
looking official.
"You said it, wind breaker," replies Steve, also appearing very
serious.
About three seconds pass by before they're both laughing, Sam
holding out his arms and giving Steve a hug, patting his back.
"Wind breaker, wow, that must have taken awhile for you to think
of," Sam laughs, letting go of Steve. "Wind breaker; I won't be
forgetting that one anytime soon."
Steve laughs and turns, walking his friend inside. "So how was
your vacation?" he asks, wanting to hear how his friend has been
handling himself ever since the Ultron incident. Sam was one of
the lucky ones who got off more easy after the battle. SHIELD
gave him as much time off as he needed to cope with everything,
and well, Sam took his time with coping.
"Cancun? Oh, it was great, man. Really nice. You should go there
sometime, they love superheroes. Well, they love you. Captain
America, Commander Rogers, who's Falcon? That was basically
their whole thing," Sam explain, smiling before frowning. "So...
how have you been here?"
Steve sighs, opening the door for his friend to step inside the
Helicarrier. "Tony's Director, as I'm sure you've heard. Do I
need to say more?"
"Nah man, I've seen the news. I figured you wouldn't be taking
things too well. I'm sure everyone is sort of... out of it," Sam
admits, closing the door. "Also heard about James. I'm really
sorry, Steve, I knew you guys were... really close."
"Yeah... We were..."

Tony rubs a hand over his eyes, setting the glass
down again. Realistically, he knows he should drink any more.
Practically, he knows that if he's completely plastered he
probably wouldn't yell at Steve. But Tony figures, either way,
Rogers would hate him for shouting or hate him for being drunk.
There's no winning with him, it's always -- he's always doing
something wrong.
"Commander Rogers," Tony says, pressing the button on the
intercom. He tries and, mostly succeeds, not to slur his words.
"My office. Now." Maybe he should get himself a secretary.
Secretary's don't get drunk on the job. They're terribly
efficient, too, if you get the right one. The problem is Tony
would probably get himself slapped by the end of the week if he
had one, because their entire point would be to make calls on
the intercom when he's drunk. The solution here is, of course,
to not get drunk, but Tony finds that most people can't really
tell the difference from his drunk work and sober work, and that
it is really, really hard to stay sober when it's so much easier
to not be.

Steve and Sam are still catching up by the time they
reach his office, and after about an hour more, Steve has told
Sam everything, and Sam has agreed to join Steve's team.
"You should talk to Logan," says Sam, feet propped up on Steve's
desk while Steve leans back in his chair, only a little stack of
paperwork to fill out today. "Weren't you guys kinda close in
the war?"
Steve shrugs, messing with his pen. "We fought together, but we
were never really buddies or anything. We haven't even talked
since the War, but he would be a good ally. Then again,he's
probably busy with the X-Men right now. They've lost a lot too."
"Still wouldn't hurt," says Sam, hands in his lap, looking at
Steve like he's trying to read him like a book. "So how are you
and Sharon?"
Just then, Steve's intercom turns on, and Tony's voice comes
out, calling his name and telling him to come to his office,
preferably now. Steve frowns, teeth gritting together like they
always seem to do whenever he hears or sees Stark. What is it
now? He's trying to stay away from Stark for his own good, but
now the man wants to talk to him?
"You better go see what he wants, Steve," Sam tells him, getting
to his feet. "I'mma go say hey to some other people. Might even
drop in to say hey to Sharon," he says before offering Steve a
smile and leaving.
Steve remains seated for awhile, hands clenched into fists as he
tries to think about what Stark could possibly want. After about
a minute, he gets up and makes his way over to Stark's office,
not even bothering to knock as he opens the door.
"You wanted to see me, Director?"

Tony has a feeling that Rogers takes his sweet time
getting up to his office, but it's still not particularly
surprising when he barges in like he always does, with that
grating, condescending tone to his voice. Tony closes his eyes,
very briefly, and sighs. "Just sit down, Rogers, I'm not in the
mood," he snaps, and maybe it's supposed to come out a growl,
but he really just sounds dejected. He runs a hand over his face
and blinks, trying to find words. Maybe he should of thought of
what to say beforehand. Huh.
"You need to stop," he says flatly, the Council's threats
bouncing around in his head. "This whole... vigilante, thing,
it's not--" he waves his hands about, looking for a word. Okay,
so he's maybe more than a little drunk. "--ethical," he decides
upon, and continues, "People won't like hearing this, they'll
get angry, the world's already gone to sh*t and I can't have
this to worry about, too." Oh, little too self-pitying, there.
Sober Tony would not have said that. But as it is he's not
sober, and he happens to pity himself very much at the
moment.

Steve looks at Tony, and can tell right away that
something's off from the way his shoulders are slouching and he
looks like he's about to pass out any second. Stark snaps at him
to sit down, and slowly, Steve obeys, observing the man in front
of him. Stark starts rambling on about how he should stop with
the whole... well, Steve's pretty sure he's talking about his
team, but it's hard to tell because Stark isn't really acting
like himself and-- Wait, is that alcohol on his breath?
Tony goes on to tell him that he can't be worrying about the
secret Avengers on top of everything else, and Steve's certain
that he smells alcohol which explains Stark's pity-party
attitude. So wait, is Stark just drinking on the job now? He's
the damn Director, he can't be doing this sort of stuff. Of
course, Steve can drink whenever he wants since he can't get
drunk, but Tony... This is unacceptable.
"Have you been drinking?" Steve asks, already knowing the
answer, angry bubbling up within. "Are you out of your damn
mind, Stark? You're running an entire organization under the
influence of alcohol?" Steve gets to his feet, looking around
the office. "Where's the stash, Stark, you can't be doing this,"
he growls, but underneath his angry exterior is a man who is
highly concerned for the well-being of the man before
him.

Tony raises his eyebrows in a vaguely unimpressed
expression as Steve, looking angry, demands if he's been
drinking. He puts his elbow on the table and lean against his
hand, finding it easier to examine the grain of the wood on his
desk instead of actually listen to Steve gripe at him. See, Tony
had expected this. That's why'd he'd gotten so drunk. Okay, so
maybe he didn't mean to get quite this drunk. But it makes it a
hell of a lot easier to tune Rogers out. He does catch that
parts about a stash, though. Smirking, he turns his face into
his hand and chuckles.
"Stash," he repeats, and looks up at Steve. "You think I have a
stash?" He's grinning, but then, suddenly, he frowns, his
eyebrows furrowing. "Well, you're right. But there are three
safes in this room and you have no idea where any of them are,
much less how to break into them. Feel free to check, though.
I've always wanted to see a rhino rampaging."

Steve glares at Tony as the man asks if he really thinks
that he has a stash, grinning right before frowning. He admits
to having a stash, but goes on to say that there are three
safes, and Steve has no idea where they are or how to break into
them, basically calling him a rhino. Steve stares daggers into
Stark, not knowing how much more he can possibly despise (or be
concerned) for this man. This drunk, stupid man who is suppose
to be leading them all to help save the world. Honestly, just
how stupid is the Council for choosing this moron. Squirrel Girl
is more capable to run this place.
"Don't get smart with me, Stark," Steve warns, placing a hand on
Tony's table to lean forward and point an accusing finger at the
man. "What were to happen if word got around that our leader was
a drunken idiot?" he snarls, three seconds away from back
slapping Tony across the face. "Do you even give the slightest
damn about this team, because you, right here, right now doesn't
look like you do, and then you get on me for trying to form my
own team when you were the one who gave me permission in the
first place!" Steve straightens up, still glaring fiercely at
Stark. "Get come coffee and start sobering up, Stark, before
someone else gets hurt."

Tony stares blankly at Steve as he leans over the
desk, being vaguely threatening. He's, really, very loud. Does
he have any idea how loud he is? Tony would like to feed him
words back to him on a speaker, because, man, even when he's not
shouting, he's shouting. He also talks a lot, and says thing
like drunk and idiot and coffee and you told me to, so I did.
Oh, Jesus Christ, is he still on that? Rogers has no sense of
sarcasm, he honestly thinks -- right, okay, maybe he can mention
that, in the reply he's trying to build up, because right now
he's just kind of staring at Steve endlessly.
He opens his mouth, about to attempt speech, but at that moment
the intercom cuts on again, and this time it's not Tony's voice,
but Hill's, saying, "AIM is stirring up the trouble in lower
Manhattan. We need a ground team immediately."
Tony's already up. "The thing about being a drunken idiot," he
drawls, "Is that people usually think you are before you
actually are. In case you haven't noticed, Commander, my name
can't get much worse. Go ahead, try to spoil it. Now go grab
