Peter listens as Natasha talks to him, telling him just
about everything he already knows. He doesn't want to be rude,
though, so he remains quiet while Widow tells him not to get
coccky. Thankfully, Tony interrupts her, saying that Peter
probably has the idea, which he does, and he adjusts the glasses
on his face while Tony asks if he has any questions. However,
the only question he really has is that if next time could Widow
reword "I'll be in your ear the whole time," but he refrains
from asking such a question, knowing it's time for him to be
serious. He's going undercover and he has to make sure he
doesn't get caught, because if he does, that's it, everyone will
know that he's Spider-Man, and he can't have that.
"Nope, no questions," he says with a small, slightly nervous
smile. He's excited, but also worried out of his spidey senses.
What if he fails? Sure, there will be backup, but if he fails,
he fails, and he doesn't want to fail while he's trying to prove
himself. No, no, he won't fail. Hes got this, he can do it. He
signed up for this because he believes in himself, so he can do
it. It'll be a piece of cake, a walk in the park.

Tony can tell that Peter is nervous -- possibly
excited, but nervous. Tony unfolds his arms and approaches him,
putting a hand on his shoulder. "One more thing," He adds,
holding up a USB key. "We know where the intel's being kept, but
not what form it's in. It could be on something like this, it
could be on paper, it could be in an computer. If it is on a
computer, this will get you through any basic firewalls or
password-protected things." Tony hands him the USB. "If not,
I'll walk you through it."
Though Tony is worried about Peter, he definitely thinks he's
capable of doing this. It's a dangerous mission, if done
incorrectly, but as long as Peter gets what he needs to get and
follows directions, it's simple and efficient. "Get a Quinjet,
get him near the compound," Tony says to Natasha, who nods and
leads Peter out of the room.

Peter watches as Tony approaches him, holding up a USB.
He explains where the intel may be kept, and how to access it if
it's on a computer. Thankfully, Peter already knows how to hack
into a computer and past main frames and such. He's the biggest
geek in school, remember? His IQ is north of 250 after all.
Maybe this will be pretty easy. Dangerous, but easy. There's
totally no need to worry. He's got Natasha in his ear, looking
through his glasses, he's got Stark waiting to give him orders,
he has his Web-Shooters hidden under his jacket, just in case.
He's totally ready and prepared.
Natasha gets him out of the room and leads him to a Quinjet, and
his heart is racing. He can already see the looks on everyone's
faces when he returns. Maybe the Commander will even give him a
metal. Okay, never going to happen, but a boy can dream, right?
Especially a boy who is about to go on a dangerous mission. It's
gonna be fun, though, lots of fun... He steps into the Quinjet
and takes a seat, buckling himself up and leaning his head back
against the seat, ready for the time of his life.

not too many hours later
Tony raises his head as his door opens, revealing Natasha's
unreadable face. She looks slightly pleased, maybe. "Pete's
back," she says, opening the door a little more to reveal him.
"I would count the mission a success." Peter looks a little
worse for wear, the side of his face starting to bruise, and
Tony would bet there was some light skirmish, but other than
that he looks fine, and, with any look, he'd gotten what he
needed, as well.
"Come in," Tony says, motioning to Peter, intending to review
the information with him. Natasha's already leaving, her part of
the job done, and having no interest in anything else. If Tony
could guess, he would say she was going to see Clint, possibly
spar with him, and build his strength back up. She really
doesn't believe in taking it easy.

Peter waits until Natasha's out before he stumbles into
Tony's office sheepishly. He points to the side of his face
that's bruising and smiles. "I don't think Aunt Mae is going to
keep believing the skateboarding incident excuse," he says with
a short laugh, walking up to Tony's desk. He did it, the mission
was successful, and he did a pretty butt-rocking job. Even
Natasha seems proud of him. Goodbye silly Spider-Man, and hello
amazing Spider-Man.
"So, does this mean I'm part of the big leagues now?" Peter
asks, semi-joking. "Does a medal come with completing this, or
do I get my own action figure?" he goes on, totally joking now,
but it would be cool if he could get an action figure. The main
Avengers have their own actions figures. Peter should know, he
has a lot of them at home, but that detail can never be
mentioned around here. He's in a good mood, though, that is,
until the Commander comes into the room.
Oh boy, they're in trouble now.

Steve storms down the hall towards Tony's office,
absolutely fuming. He already hates the man, is there a feeling
stronger than hate? Hes had enough with him, more than enough,
and he's not sure how much more he can take. The only reason he
is still here is because the team needs him, needs a leader that
most of them don't despise, and after his breakdown last week,
he's sure some people are now questioning his capabilities.
However, he took a day off after finding out about Bucky's
death, and thankfully, Sharon took the day off with him. She
calmed him down, told him he had done nothing wrong, that Tony
deserved more pain (which Steve was pretty sure he didn't fully
agree with), and they spent the rest of the night fooling
around, which always helps after being stressed. He has been
alright ever since, ignoring Tony, not showing up to some of his
meeting, keeping his distance when he knows it's for the best.
But then Clint told him what happened. About how Tony spent
Peter, the seventeen year old off on a dangerous, top secret
mission, alone.
"Are you out of your damn mind?" Steve asks loudly, marching
into Stark's office where Tony and Peter were, half of Peter's
face bruised. "Sense when does SHIELD send out kids to do our
work? Peter could've been killed!" he points out, staying a foot
away from Stark's desk, still trying to distance
himself.

[shadow=#999999,left]"We create our own demons."[/shadow]
Tony stands up, smiling a little as Peter starts
cracking jokes. He obviously feels good about the mission, and
Tony is convinced that's a good thing -- everybody needs a
little morale booster, and a successful mission seems to be the
thing that gets Peter in a good mood. Tony will admit -- he's
kind of proud of him. From the very brief report Natasha had
sent as they were flying home, Pete had kept his cool throughout
the mission and done it almost as well as she could have. That
definitely merits praise.
And Tony is about to give him some, opening his mouth to do so,
but it's at that moment that the Commander throws open the door
and marches inside, already yelling. Tony, though he wishes he
didn't, jumps at the sudden noise, his hands tightening into
fists and instinctively glancing toward the bottom drawer of
his desk, where he knows a very special kind of suitcase lies.
He's not taking any more chances with Rogers anymore. He wants
to attack him, fine, but Tony will be damned if he lets the man
kill him.
Steve asks, or maybe demands, to know when SHIELD started
sending children out to do an agent's work, pointing out that
Peter could have been killed. He's got that look about him
again, like Tony's the largest waste of life in the world.
(Tony's not inclined to disagree with him, but it's not exactly
his place to say.)
"Take a step back," Tony growls. He may not be able to defend
himself, but he can defend somebody like Peter. "Since when do
you call perfectly capable members of the Initiative children?
Peter did the job, and he did it well. You think he got on the
team for sitting around on his ass all day?"

Steve grits his teeth when Tony tells him to take a step
by, like he has no self-control. He's not here to beat Stark,
and to be honest, the last time had been due to his absolute
rage and hatred. Someone had died then, but Peter seems alright,
therefore Steve doesn't really have a reason to feel fiery rage,
but then Tony accuses him of calling Peter a child, and then
goes on and makes it sound like Steve doesn't think Peter is
good enough.
"I called Peter a kid," Steve clarifies, voice a low growl.
"Which he is. He's a seventeen year old kid, but he's also a
tremendous fighter and I'm quite proud of him," he goes on, tone
softening as he looks at Peter before glaring back at Tony
again. "But he still needs a lot of work before he's ready for
solo missions. He doesn't need to prove himself, and he needs to
stay with the team. Peter has had no SHIELD training yet, and
there's still much more he needs to learn," Steve stresses,
voice not raised until he continues. "You're out of your mind
for sending him into enemy territory alone, taking Natasha's
place! We can't loose him. He's still got a life ahead of him!"
Steve turns and looks at Peter again who seems frozen in time,
looking back and forth between Tony and Steve. The kid does have
the rest of his life ahead of him, and to be honest, Steve
thinks he's still too young for all of this. He's in school,
only has an aunt to go home to, needs to start preparing for
college. Hes got too much to do, and being a superhero is a lot
of work, not to mention extremely stressful. If something
happens to him here, a lot of lives would be changed for the
worst.
"No more solo missions, Stark," he snaps, still looking at
Peter. "Not unless I approve it."

Tony squares his jaw, eyes hardening as Steve starts
to order him around, telling Tony that he doesn't get to assign
anymore "solo missions" without his permission. He's sick of
this -- Rogers thinks he's so entitled, thinks he's something
special, thinks that he's better--
(And, it's true, he's better than Tony, but that's neither here
nor there, it's just a point of relativity--)
"Fury chose this team," Tony nearly hisses, reminding the
Commander. "He didn't seem to have a problem with Peter's age.
Maybe because he took the time to look past what he may lack in
experience and see what he made up for in natural ability. Don't
tell me how to run this organization, Commander. If you don't
like it, start your own damn team. Just get the hell out of my
office." It's gotten to that point -- that he can barely stand
Rogers' presence, that even just a few seconds of his glares and
his shouts grate on Tony's last nerve. He feels like he's going
to snap the entire time he's around the man, and Tony doesn't
know what would happen if (when) he does.

Steve's eyes narrow as Tony brings up Fury, now just
another person on the list of people Tony has killed. He says
that Fury chose the team, that he didn't have a problem with
Tony's age. He chastises him for telling him how to run this
organization. Steve grinds his teeth together as Tony suggests
he start his own team and get out of his office. But then,
suddenly, the sound of starting his own team didn't sound bad at
all. Actually, it seems perfect. A team in which he'd be in
complete control of with no Stark. No worries. Just cooperation
and peace.
Steve smirks, thinking hard about the idea, turning to look at
Peter. "I'm honored to have you on the team, Pete, and I'm
thoroughly impressed by your abilities. Just make sure this
doesn't happen again for awhile," he says before turning back to
look at Tony, getting ready to take his leave. He's still
smirking, and looking the man he so despises up and down before
walking away, and out the door.
Steve strides down the hall, a new, confident spring in his
step. He sees Sharon walking a little ways ahead, and catches up
with her, sliding his hand into hers, not even catching her by
surprise anymore.
"Sharon, what would you think about me creating my own team of
heroes?" he asks, grinning from ear to ear. After all, the
Director suggested it.

"A team?" Natasha swings an arm over his head and
follows up with her leg. Clint ducks, blocking with his forearm,
and grabs at her ankle.
"Of sorts." She uses it as leverage, jumping to knock him back
by his shoulders. He ends up with his back on the ground, her
arm against his neck. He smiles. "Think of it as following a
better leader." He kicks her off and then get back on their
feet, eying each other up.
"What's wrong with Stark?" Natasha swings first, her fist
clipping his jaw, and they start a series of punches and jabs
and complicated footwork.
"Uh, he can't see head from tails and nobody likes him?"
"Bruce seems to like him."
"Maybe out of obligation." A sudden kick to the chest sends him
sprawling back, and Clint thinks he may even see something like
anger in Natasha's eyes. He looks uneasily up at her.
"Two out of three," she points out, and helps him up. "What's
your point, Clint?"
"I want you there, Tasha. And I don't think Steve would have
anything bad to say about you on our side."
"He's Steve now?" Natasha takes the gloves off he hands and
starts to unwrap her hands, not looking over. "What ever
happened to Commander?"
"What kind of problem do you have with him? You two are friends.
Hey." He grabs Natasha by the elbow, and she backhands him hard
enough for his head to snap all the way to the right. They're
done sparring. That's personal.
"My problem," she breathes, like she's fighting to control
herself. "Is that Steve is hardly in control of himself. You
expect me allow him to control me? At least Stark didn't try to
beat anybody to a pulp."
"So, what?" Clint demands, the slap still stinging, both
physically and emotionally. "You're on Stark's side with this?
You think you're choosing the lesser of two evils, here?"
"Who says I'm choosing?" she replies coolly.
"Nat," he says, disbelief in his voice. "You can't ride the
fence with this. You have to choose a side."
"Do not say that to me," she hisses, as if she's barely
suppressing a shout. She looks fierce and furious as she whirls
on Clint, nearly shaking with rage. Despite the fact that she
looks like she could yell, she talks quietly, even more
intimidating than she would be if she showed her anger. "We have
been fighting together for years, Clint. The only people we have
ever fought for is ourselves. And when it suddenly becomes
convenient for your argument, the rules change?" She gets close
to him, puts a hand on his chest and pushes him back, a sneer on
her face. "When has dividing ourselves ever been a good thing?
You think this will end well? Steve isn't courageous; he's
angry, and Tony's not blind, he's falling and trying to find a
damn foothold. You want to be part of some secret rebellion,
fine. But I'm not getting into it."
"Nat," Clint tries, but she's already shoved her way past him
and and is walking rapidly to the door.
"Making Tony the damned pariah isn't going to change a thing."
Natasha growls, her hand in the door. "Tell Steve that the
sooner he realizes that, the less chance there is of people
getting hurt." With that, she slips out of the door, leaving
Clint alone and troubled.
