Steve continues to punch Tony into oblivion, not
planning on stopping anytime soon until, suddenly, something
hard and fast hits him in the face, causing his neck to snap
back, blood spewing from his nose and mouth. He stays sitting up
though, about to open his eyes and see whatever attacked him
before being hit-- no, kicked again in the stomach by...
Natasha. He's familiar with how her kicks feel against his
stomach. He falls back this time, but quickly starts recovering,
scrambling to get back at Tony before he's being pulled up and
backed against the wall by the woman who used to be, and still
is, one of his closest friends.
Steve breaths heavily, blood dripping down his face as he stares
into Natasha's eyes, trying to force his thoughts into her mind
almost with the intensity of his stare. He won't hurt Natasha or
try to fight her, but he knows a speech is coming up next, and
sure enough, he's right.
She asks him rhetorical questions, people watching over Stark in
the background, but Steve keeps his eyes on Natasha, wanting to
hear what she has to say because surely she out of everyone
knows how he is feeling right now. She was with him almost every
step of the way during the Winter Soldier mission. She knows how
much Bucky had meant to him... and still means to him. Natasha
talks to him about control, about how she's tired of he and
Stark's bickering, about how he's loosing it... about the tings
she has seen and experienced, and, of course, about his job.
Steve stays silent for many minutes, breathing heavily, watching
as Natasha goes before finally looking over at Stark whose face
was a mess and Bruce... He has already hurt more people without
meaning to just by hurting Stark... He really is loosing it....
Then again, he has lost just about everything already... how is
he going to keep himself from loosing anything else? He needs...
he needs... space and... and time. He needs time to think and
some space to think it in. He can't loose himself. He has to
stay strong for his team, for Sharon, and even for Bucky whose
cold body remains on the slate.
He needs a day off.
"Leave the room," he says suddenly to everyone, staring at the
body of his friend. "You wanted me to identify the body, and
I've said no names yet. I need to be alone in order to process
everything," he goes on before anyone even has a chance to stop
him. "I'm sorry," Steve says almost under his breath, not
apologizing to Tony necessarily, but to everyone who witnessed
his breakdown. He wants to be alone for awhile before he takes
his leave. He wants to be alone... with his friend. With his old
companion.

"Lean your head forward," Bruce says, nothing but
soft murmurs and gentle hands. That's all he can be, all he's
allowed to be. If he does anything else than focus on what's
right in front of him he knows he's going to end up just as
angry as Natasha, and that's not really an option for him. Tony
does as he's told, holding his nose while blood drips between
his fingers. "Are you seeing double? Feeling faint?"
"I'm fine," Tony grumbles defensively, not looking up, which
means yes. Bruce sighs, and closes his eyes for a moment. He's
aware that Natasha's right behind him, yelling at Steve, but he
can't focus on that, either.
"You're going to go see a doctor, Tony. You hit your head pretty
hard." Tony looks like, out of all things, this is the greatest
inconvenience for him. But, ironically, it may actually be a
good thing. God knows Tony needs to rest a while, even if it
means being hospitalized. Bruce can see that -- he's, maybe, the
only one who cares to look. Tony's got dark circles under his
eyes, new lines on his face, an uncharacteristic sag to his
shoulders that doesn't do so much to inspire. He's frayed at the
edges, and unraveling quicker every day. Bruce can't be there
all the time to fix it, and he knows nobody else wants to try.
Natasha stalks suddenly out of the room, and Bruce turns a bit
to look at Steve, who is, at the moment, commanding them all to
get out. Tony's already trying to get up, and, though Bruce
lends him an arm, he still stumbles, sagging against his friend,
hardly able to stand on his own. Bruce calls a couple agents
over to help him to medical. His eyes are glazed and defeated as
he staggers, and is sometimes dragged, out to the hall. Bruce is
the last in line to follow him out, but he pauses, just for a
moment, his hand in the door, to look at Steve.
"I know you hate him," he says quietly, his words gentle and
unobtrusive. "And I know I can't do anything to change that. But
he was thrown into this, and he's just... trying to fix the
parts that he can." That, wasn't exactly what he had meant to
say, but -- it came out all the same, and Bruce supposes it's
true. He sighs softly, and adds what his original words were
going to be. "Your nose is broken. Get a doctor to reset it
before it heals that way."

Steve's eyes dart over to Tony as the man stumbles,
trying his best to leave the room, and Steve immediately looks
away again, staring at Bucky. People rush over to Tony's aid,
and Steve just tries his best to wipe the blood from his own
face, lip busted, nose broken. Tony gets dragged out, and
Steve's eyes unconsciously move back over to watch him leave,
Tony's eyes lost and distant. Perhaps he is finally waking up a
bit more to the seriousness of all this, and what it's doing to
everyone. For Steve, it's eating him alive.
Tony's gone, but Bruce remains to say a few words, defending
Tony, standing up for him and everything he is doing, just like
Bruce always does. Steve slightly wishes he could think badly of
the man, but he can't bring himself to dislike such a peaceful,
gentle creature. However, he can't understand exactly why Bruce
is still Tony's little sheep. Lots of Tony's closest friends
have left him, but yet, Bruce stands firm by Tony's side. Steve
doesn't understand it, but he accepts it, knowing that if
there's one person that will probably never even get close to
seeing Stark the way he does, it's Bruce. The man tells him he
needs his nose to be reset before taking his leave, closing the
door behind him.
Steve stares blankly at the lifeless body of his friend in front
of him, unsure of what to do or how to feel now. He has thought
that he has lost Bucky before many times, but now... now he's
certain he has lost him. Bucky was his final piece of the past
that he cared about remaining, but now, he has been torn from
him as well... by Stark, and Steve can only wonder how many more
lives will be lost due to his mistake.
Steve steps closer to Bucky until he's right by his side, just
like the old days. Carefully, he reaches out and brushes some of
Bucky's long brown hair over the side of his face that's mostly
missing. He glances down at the area where his silver arm once
lay, and touches the nub that remains. It wasn't until the tip
of his finger made contact with Bucky's cold, dead skin that he
finally lost it, hands clenched into fists, body shaking again,
tears no longer able to come as easily as they used to.
"It's my fault," Steve says quietly, almost bitterly. "It was
Stark's weapons that took you down, but it was me who led you to
them. I should've taken better care of you. I should've-- I
should've kept you more near me instead of letting you run off
all the time when I wanted you to stay," he goes on, talking to
a man who couldn't even answer back. "It was my fault I lost you
the first time, and I should've came back and searched for you
like Howard did for me. It would've been so easy. It's my fault
you turned out this way, that things had to end like this, and
I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry, Bucky." Steve gets to his knees and
bows his head over the table. "You were the greatest friend I've
ever had, and you-- you taught me so much. There will never be
another one like you, Bucky, and I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I'm
sorry, I'm sorry."
He has more to say, so many unspoken words in his heart, but he
knows it's already too late to speak them, and that Bucky
probably already knew, somewhere deep down, how much he had
meant to him. Steve just wishes they could've spent more time
together as friends, and less time as enemies. Then again, to
Steve, Bucky never really was an enemy. He was always a friend,
and will always be remembered as a friend. And maybe that's why
Bruce stays so close to Stark, because no matter what someone
has done, a friend is a friend, and you have to keep them close
for as long as you can... before it's too late, because, you
never know how much you really needed someone until they're
gone.

Saturday, May 23rd
Tony's been sitting in this debrief for the last half-hour,
reconstructing the site, listening to what Natasha knows. They'd
gathered some intelligence about a group of people, maybe Hydra,
rogue or not, or possibly just trouble makers, who know the
location of a large group of Ultron parts stored somewhere. Tony
hadn't realized that there was enough to make a collection (an
armory) out of. Unfortunately, these rumors were all they were
able to recover, as Natasha's cover had been blown, and she had
to get out of there very quickly.
He tunes back in to her saying, --it's easy to sneak in from the
coast, but you have to go in through the east side or you'll
come across another encampment--"
"Surely," says Thor, "It would be easiest to incinerate our
targets?"
"Easier, yes," Natasha says. "Tactically correct, no. Our last
option is to go in guns blazing, but that could mean a lot of
people hurt, not to mention destruction of the intel. We need
somebody who could take down a group of enemies, but do it
quietly."
"So we need another you," Tony says dully, "And Barton's not fit
for work yet, no matter what he says on the matter." The debrief
is dwindling down, anyways, and Tony's having one of those days
where he feels like everybody's gaze in accusatory. He doesn't
want to end up shouting, or making a fool of himself. He stands
up, looking around at everyone gathered: T'Challa, Peter, Thor,
Bruce, Luke. "Let me know if you think you can handle it. You
need to be light on your feet and quick. I'll be in my office."
He leaves, feeling like he's falling. He doesn't know what it is
anymore, but it's just... when people are everywhere, staring at
it, he can't handle it anymore. He doesn't even know what he's
supposed to do about it.

Peter stays quiet, staring at the table while Tony and
Natasha go back and forth, Tony asking for information, Natasha
giving it to him, everyone staring at Tony. He figures it must
get pretty unnerving to have everyone staring at you in disgust
and stuff all the time. I mean, Peter gets started at often
around here, but it's only because everyone seems to think a
little less of him, like they don't think he'll ever measure up.
Tony, so far, though, has seemed to think the most of him, as an
equal. Sure, the Commander is great too, but he acts too much
like a father instead of a mentor around him, never really
letting him do much because he's too concerned for his safety.
Finally, something Natasha says really catches his interest.
They need someone who could take down the enemies and do it
quietly. Hope fills Peter's eyes because, honestly, who is
better at being sneaky and quiet than a man who can stick to
ceilings and shoot webs over people's mouths? He's perfect for
this job, but... as always around here, he feels too intimidated
around all these first-class, legendary heroes to really say
anything about it. It really sucks being the youngest and newest
Avenger.
Tony dismisses everyone, saying that if anyone thinks they can
handle the mission, to go to his office and tell him. He leaves,
and everyone else follows, leaving only Peter behind. He smiles
to himself before standing and heading out the door, already on
his way to Tony's office. He knows he can do this. He knows he
can be just as good as Natasha or Clint or anyone who had been
in that room. No one has really gotten a chance to see what he
can do, and now's his chance to show everyone.
He knocks on Tony's door twice before stepping in, the feeling
of intimidation returning as he suddenly becomes aware that it's
just him and the Director, Tony Stark. Okay, he has already
fanboyed enough the first time he met him, no time to freak out.
"Um, Director, I was wondering if-- and believe me, this is
going to sound crazy, but I was wondering if I could go on that
mission you were talking about..." Oh crap, he's totally going
to get laughed at, he just knows it. Tony might be more laid
back and stuff when it comes to him, but there's no way he's
going to let him go to a place swimming with Hydra or whatever
so he can take them out, especially while his ribs are still in
the process of completely healing.

Tony falls back into paperwork, mindless motions of
his hands and his eyes dully skimming the words that all,
really, seem to say exactly the same thing. If he's feeling
overwhelmed, hey, at least there's always boring paperwork,
right?
(He misses his lab. But he has to be productive now -- he always
has to be doing something.)
The door opens, and Tony tenses for a brief second before he
looks up, half-expecting it to be Hill, or perhaps the
Commander, come to scream at him again. It happens just to be
Peter, but Tony still touches his faces, as if on instinct. He
drops his hand when he realizes what he's doing -- no need to
draw any more attention to the scabs and bruises that still
remain from Rogers' attack on him a week ago. Peter walks
tentatively up to the desk, and asks if can go on the mission
that Tony was talking about.
"With who," Tony says immediately, but, upon closer examination
of Peter's face, he quickly corrects himself. "Oh, you meant--
alone?" His brow furrows. "You haven't exactly done things like
this before," he points out. He's not against Peter going, but--
he doesn't want him getting hurt, is his main concern. But, if
the kid thinks he can handle it, then Tony has no reason to
doubt him.

Peter's face immediately drops when Tony asks who he
wants to go with, but then he quickly corrects himself,
realizing Peter meant alone. So far, there have been no laughs,
just... no direct answers. Or answers at all, really. Just
Tony... furrowing his brow. Oh boy, here comes the big let down.
"You haven't exactly done things like this before."
Oh. Oh. Wow, no denial yet, that's cool, but it's sure to come.
He's an idiot for asking to do this alone, or do this at all,
really. "Um, no, but that's really the whole point, isn't it? I
feel like I'm always about five steps behind everyone else, but
I know I'm capable of being on the same step. I mean, I'm going
to have to do something like this eventually, right? Why not
just do it now?" Okay, wow, maybe he's really pushing his luck
now because he's still sort of new to the whole superhero thing
no matter how many villains he has face. Tony has faced the Ten
Rings, Obadiah Stane, Loki, The Mandrin, blah blah blah, a huge
list of bad guys, and Peter has faced the Green Goblin and the
Lizard and a bunch of other bad guys that aren't even worth
mentioning. He's sort of just the laughing stock of the team
right now, and he just wants to have one place besides home
where he's not always laughed at.

Tony listens while Peter explains his views, and why
he wants to take on this mission, fiddling with the pen in his
hand all the while. He can respect Peter's train of thought, and
he can certainly understand it. Back before all this (back when
it mattered), Tony had wanted to prove himself, prove that he
could be Iron Man, protect the world, save it. He'd done
thought, and, even though the glory hadn't lasted, it had
been... good. And Peter's smart. He's a good fighter. He's quick
on his feet. He follows orders, when he wants to, and most of
the time he doesn't cause any trouble.
Tony looks back down at his paperwork, signing his name for what
seems to be the hundredth time. "Okay," he says, casually, "That
can be arranged. Make sure you talk to Natasha about it, I'll
have everyone else know. Hopefully we can have you in there by
tomorrow."

before he agrees to let him go. Peter smiles, his face bright
with excitement as Tony tells him to go talk to Natasha and that
they'd try to get him in there by tomorrow. Tomorrow, great,
yeah, tomorrow. This is probably the biggest thing he has ever
done, and he knows he can do it if he doesn't goof everything
up.
"Thank you, sir," Peter says, wanting to throw his arms around
Tony and hug him, but he contains his urge, knowing that would
be more than slightly awkward. He leaves Tony's office without
another word, a big smile on his face. He's actually going on an
almost top secret mission in the place of Black Window. How cool
is that?

Tony hears Peter thank him, and looks up again just
before Peter turns around, long enough to see him smiling ear to
ear, before the boy turns around and head out of his office,
possibly with a skip in his step. Tony smiles a little, too,
nothing more than a smile, crooked upturn, but a smile
nonetheless. At least Peter can brighten up a room a little, and
he doesn't seem to glare at Tony so much as admire him (which is
a little ridiculous, Tony admits, but he'll take what he can
get).

Sunday, May 24th
"I'll be in your ear the whole time," Natasha says, handing
Peter a comm. "And I'll see what you see." She sets a pair of
thick-rimmed glasses on his face. "We'll have back-up nearby. If
you need them, all you have to do is say the word, but we really
don't want this to get messy. Be as discreet as possible, but if
somebody sees you, don't act suspicious. Be prepared to fight.
Don't get coccky. Don't--"
"I think," Tony interrupts, leaning back against the wall, arms
crossed. No need to mother-hen him -- Tony figures he get enough
of that at home. "That he's got all the basics. Any questions,
Pete?"
