Steve continues waiting for Stark's orders, ready to
detonate the power core at any second. When Stark finally does
answer, however, it's to tell Steve to give him another minute.
They don't have another minute. He needs to detonate this thing
so they can get the hell out. But then, Tony's on the comm link
again, telling him there's enemies coming, and not to let them
get to the power core. Great. Wasn't Stark suppose to be keeping
him in the clear?
Sure enough, Steve hears a crowd of footstep approaching him,
and lets go of the power core to grab his shield and gun, and to
turn around, ready for the onslaught. The door gets broken down,
and next thing Steve knows, there's Hydra everywhere.
Immediately, he reacts, throwing his shield, taking down about
five Hydra, firing his gun, taking down a few more. It only
takes Steve a second to realize that there are too many, and
that they didn't have the time to take them all out. He turns
his back to the power core for one second, and looks back to
find three Hydra agents getting close to it, ready to snatch it
away. Steve throws his shield at them, taking them out only to
have about five more take their place.
"Stark, there's too many!" Steve practically shouts into the
comm, not calm at all as agents grab at his arm and his neck,
making him knock them away and sling them to different parts of
the room. It's too much, and there's too many getting close to
the power core. Finally, Steve flings himself over to the power
core. "Five seconds, Stark!" he warns Tony, and then he does it.
He detonates the power core, and the five seconds begins for him
to get out. He looks back over to where the exit is, firing his
gun some more. Hes got to make it out in time.
5...
He throws his shield again, tearing through the crowd of agents.
4...
More grab at him, and he does everything he can to break free,
much less agents around him now, but still not enough time...
3...
He's not going to make it out in time.

Tony hears Steve's warning through the comm, followed
a second later by his countdown, and Tony a cold ball of ice
gets lodged somewhere in Tony's throat. He doesn't even have
time to say anything -- he needs to get there, fast. Is Steve
insane, doesn't he know how destructive these things are,
they're an Ultron's last defense, people can survive them. Tony
takes no mind to the structural integrity of the building -- he
blasts right through the floor and doesn't stop. He's got the
countdown in front of his face, and too many heat signatures,
but Steve burns a little hotter than other people, a little
warmer, so Tony pinpoints that and soars through the open room
as fast as he can, picking up more and more speed. The power
core is growing hotter and hotter, and five seconds dwindle down
to four, three, two-- there's no time to get Steve safely out of
the way.
Tony bowls over agents and collides with Steve with such an
impact he's almost positive the armor's dented, wrapping his
arms around him. The suit screams away from the power core right
as it detonates, expanding, vaporizing anything close enough
with white-hot heat. Tony can feel it at his heels as he flies,
consuming too much too fast, so he puts everything he has into
flight power and holds onto the Commander a little tighter,
blasting through walls right before they're decimated by the
blast.
He has to stop, though -- the next wall, JARVIS lets him know,
is iron, and, nearly on the outskirts of the explosion, Tony can
risk it. The flaps on his suit fly out, slowing them down, and
Tony nearly completely covers Steve with his body as he holds
them against the wall, his suit catching any shrapnel and flames
that can reach this far. The explosion collapses, like it's
sucking all the power it has back into it's core, and vanishes,
leaving an enormously unstable hole in the basement floor of the
building and the shadows of the Hydra agents it had taken out
against the wall.
The shocking silence afterwards doesn't last long.
"Are you out of your damn mind!?" Tony demands, bordering on
hysterical. "You nearly lost your f*cking life!" He practically
rips off his helmet and backs away from Steve, eyes wild,
breathing hard. "I told you to give me a minute! Did you miss
the part where one of these things almost killed three of our
teammates, when they weren't fighting right next to
it!?"

Steve's hope is just about gone as he puts his shield on
his back, ready to hit the floorboards and pray that his shield
protects him from most of the explosion, although he already
knows that it won't. He's prepared to die as well, just like he
is every time he enters a war zone, closing his eyes. However,
he's not prepared to suddenly feel arms around him, hoisting him
up and holding him close. He opens his eyes to see Stark, in his
Iron Man suit, of course, flying as fast as he can to get them
out. The power core explodes, and heat fills the air, but his
chest against Tony's protects his front side, and his shield
protects his back as they break through walls. Suddenly, he's
against a wall, seeing nothing but the red of Stark's suit as
shrapnel and flames and fly through the air. Then, just like
that, it's all gone.
Steve releases a breath he didn't know he had been holding, and
Stark starts yelling, asking if he's out of his mind, and he
almost died, ripping off his helmet and backing away from him,
causing to sink down a bit against the wall. Then he goes on to
remind him of the people who recently got injured from the power
cores, asking if he had forgotten about them.
"I haven't forgotten, Stark," he says, surprisingly calm,
breathing heavily. "There were too many and they kept trying to
get the core. It was either get killed by them, let them
detonate the power core and kill us all, or detonate it myself
right then, warn you, and risk my own life," he explains, unable
to stop starring at Stark, still shocked that he tried so hard
to save him after all the stuff he has said to him. "You're the
Director, my mission was to detonate the power core and make
sure you get out in time. So yes, I could've lost my life, but
then again, you could've lost yours."
Steve stands up straight, practically over the initial shock of
everything, and what he's saying, he knows it's true, but...
when he hears them aloud, it really sounds like he cares a great
deal about Stark. I mean, yeah, he doesn't want Stark to die,
but... Steve stops thinking about it, and lets out a cough,
placing his hands on his knees. Well great, now he owes his life
to Tony Stark.

Tony paces as Rogers starts explaining himself, or,
trying, anyways, but Tony is fuming, and he's pretty sure that
through his panic and his racing heart he only gets about one
word out of ten. He turns to face Steve when he starts coughing,
looking no less furious, and, although he's filled with worry
and dread, it doesn't seem to make it across the right way on
his face.
"You're a goddamn idiot," Tony spits, grateful that his voice is
shaking a lot less than his hands. "Hydra would've blown it up
in a place that made some actual damage! That's why we were
blowing it up here, to keep them from hurting civilians! It
wasn't an emergency, you didn't need to risk your life--" He
pushes a hand through his hair, closes his eyes, tries to catch
his breath. He feels like he's a second away from hitting Rogers
just to try and make him see, understand that he can't hurt
anyone else.
"Your mission," Tony says, slower, opening his eyes, "Was to
follow the orders you were given. That's what we agreed upon,
Commander, if you can't do that anymore, you need to let me know
so I can find a more suitable partner on these runs."

Steve looks up to meet eyes with Tony's, fury burning
within them. Why's Stark so damn angry anyways? If anyone should
be angry, it should be Steve. He gave Tony the warning so he
could fly away and be safe, not go back and rescue him and put
his own life at risk! If anyone's the idiot, it's Stark, not
him, he was doing what he thought was necessary during a time of
trail and pressure. Hydra would've killed him or gotten away
with the power core had he not detonated it right then.
Stark starts to chastise him some more, calling him an idiot,
saying that it hadn't been an emergency and he didn't have to
risk his life. Steve stares at Stark, wondering why his life is
so important to him anyways. The whole reason Steve volunteered
to do this with Stark was so that if a life needed to be taken,
he could risk his, and the reason that they're the most
experienced members of the entire team. He watches as Tony runs
a hand through his hair and closes his eyes before he tells him
what his mission was to him, and how if he can't obey orders,
he'd find someone else who can.
"I did what was necessary, Director," Steve starts out again,
taking a step closer to Tony. "It was idiotic for you to risk
your life in hopes to save me. You could've died too," he says
before pushing his way past Stark, done arguing with him about
lives and idiocy. He has done nothing wrong. There was an
emergency, and Steve did what was necessary. End of story.

Tony doesn't entirely know what he's doing when Steve
pushes past him -- the next thing he knows, though, he has a
fierce grip on Steve's arm, and he's pulled him in close enough
to see the dirt on his face. He might've yelled Commander! at
some point, but he could hardly say when. He stares, intense
and, perhaps, a little desperate.
"We are not here to risk lives," he says, "We are here to save
them. Do you really think we can afford any more losses?" Wanda,
Pietro, Johnny, Reed, Fury, countless others... there are too
many people dead because of him. Tony just wants the list to
stop getting longer. "I am trying to fix this, Rogers. You dead
is not fixing anything. I will repeat myself one more time-- you
listen to my orders, or I find somebody who can. Are we clear on
this?"

Steve's walking away before there's a hand on his arm,
pulling him back, Tony shouting before they're face-to-face. He
looks down at Tony's gauntlet-covered hand, glaring at it like
if he looks at it with enough hatred, it might burst into
flames. Sadly, it doesn't and he looks back up at Tony, their
eyes shooting daggers into one another. Steve never thought he
could feel such hatred towards a man who just saved his life,
but he did.
Tony once again tells him what they're mission is, reminding him
of all the lives Tony has taken due to his stupid Ultron idea,
and Tony's so close he can feel his hot breath on his skin,
eating him up inside. Then Tony tells him how he's trying to fix
all of this, but he can't, he can't fix the lives of the dead,
nor can he fix all the lives that were affected due to Tony's
stupidity. However, Tony still seems to care a great deal, even
about his life. Then again, who's to say this wasn't all for
him? Who's to say that he doesn't only just care about Steve's
life because he knows the entire world would hate him if he came
back with him dead? Yet, Steve can't dwell on this thought long
before Stark's asking if they're clear again.
Steve scoffs, using his other hand to tear Tony's hand off of
him, pushing him away from himself. "We're clear," he growls,
glaring at Tony before walking away yet again, hands balled up
into fists. He's had more than enough of Stark today, and needs
to get away from him once again just so no one else gets
hurt.

Saturday, May 16th
"He's missing an arm," Tony notes, raising his eyebrows. "Did
somebody try and amputate it before he died?"
"That would make sense," Bruce murmurs, examining it, "But there
are some other things that don't. See, here, the bone's
obviously been cut through with a saw -- a surgical one, of
course, but there's no bruising or extra blood. Somebody took
the arm after he died, but, see, the saw mark has healed
completely. An implant, I think. And somebody took it."
"Somebody took his fake arm?" Tony's brow furrows. "Who in their
right mind--"
"Director," Natasha says softly. She's here, as are several
other team mates. "We were thinking it wasn't your usual
prosthetic."
Tony glances back down at the man, half his face gone, his hair
burned and charred. He suddenly understands-- but he's not sure.
And there's only one person Tony knows was close enough to tell
if this is really him. "Call Commander Rogers."

Steve sits in his office, filling out paperwork, running
a hand through his hair. It's been a pretty uneventful day, but
perhaps that was best because, so far, he hasn't run into Stark
once. Hes just been cooped up in his office, signing paper,
after paper, after paper. If anything, the day has been more
peaceful than uneventful, and this is the first time in awhile
he hasn't had to sign confirmation papers that someone has died,
which was one of the biggest reliefs. Everything was fine.
Until there's a knock at the door.
Steve looks up, telling whoever it was to come in, and a second
later, a young agent pokes his head inside his office, his
expression grave as he stares at Steve.
"Commander, a body has been brought in, and you have been
requested to come and help identify it."
Steve gets to his feet immediately, and follows the agent down
the hall. He wonders who it is he could be identifying. As far
as he knows, all of the registered heroes have all been
accounted for, dead and alive. Surely they couldn't have misses
someone, but if they hadn't, then why in heaven and hell's name
do they need him to come and identify someone's body?
The agent opens the door for him, and he steps inside the room
where just about everyone was, staring back at him, gathered
around a table. Steve slowly approaches the table, and everyone
backs away so he can see... the body of... Bucky.
Bucky Barnes, his oldest, closest friend is lying on the table,
dead, one arm removed, and half his face gone.
Steve stares at him for many seconds in silence, all sorts of
emotions filling his body. Eventually, one feeling rises above
the rest, causing his body to shake almost violently, and his
hands to turn into fists. He's angry. Angry with the world, with
himself, but most importantly, the man who caused all of this to
happen.
"You b*stard..." Steve begins, voice quaking with the sudden
rage inside of him. "You damn f***ing b*stard!" he shouts,
turning to glare viciously at Stark, such anger and rage
building up within him he could almost feel it vibrating off the
walls. People start backing up, no doubt seeing the flames in
his eyes, teeth clenched together. "This is all your. F***ing.
Fault!"
Next thing Steve know, he's holding Stark up by the neck,
slamming him down onto the floor before climbing on top of him,
punching Stark's face again, and again, and again, practically
beating him into the ground. Some agents come over and try to
pull him away, but their efforts are wasted as they're thrown
back against the walls, knocking the breath right out of them as
he continues to beat the hell out of Tony, rage beyond compare.
So many people have been taken from him these past few weeks,
but nothing, nothing could have prepared him for this. He now
hates Stark more than he hates the Devil himself, or hell, or
anyone he has ever heard of or faced. From now on, he no longer
cares if Tony lives or dies.

He doesn’t even have time to think.
Steve starts yelling at him, cursing at him, and the next thing
Tony knows he can’t breathe and his head’s ringing, vision
swimming, he’s pretty sure his nose is broken and the pure,
unbidden rage in Steve’s eyes leaves no illusion to what he’s
trying to do to Tony. He can’t even raise his hands to defend
himself – he’s completely pinned under the larger man, though,
even if he weren’t, he supposes there’s not a lot he can do,
anyways. Steve could kill him, so easily kill him, that Tony's
surprised he's not dead yet.
Suddenly, a foot appears from out of nowhere, colliding with
Steve's face hard enough to snap his head back, and Tony feels
blood not his own spatter across his skin. It's Natasha, anger
burning unforgiving in her eyes. She spins, and delivers another
kick in the center of Steve's stomach, the momentum sending him
sprawling back. Steve tries to get up, obviously still enraged,
trying to get at Tony again, but Natasha isn't having any of it
-- she fights him to his feet and keeps pushing, refusing to
give an inch. She is fierce and powerful, not stopping until
Steve's backed up against the wall with an arm against his
throat.
"You think you're the only one who's lost someone?" she demands,
her voice a snarl. "You think you're the only one who's
suffered?" Bruce comes into Tony's sights, helping him sit up,
eyes everywhere -- evaluating the damage. Protecting him, maybe.
"We're all angry, Steve. But we're in enough control of
ourselves to keep from doing that." She's baring her teeth like
an animal, like, if she wanted to, she could rip somebody's
throat out with her teeth. "You need to get it together,
Commander, because I can't follow a man I can't trust not to
kill his own damn teammate. I'm sick of you and Stark -- it was
your incompetent bickering that nearly killed my partner." She
pushes a little harder against Steve's throat. "We asked you to
identify a body. This has nothing to do with your personal
agenda. You, of all people, should know that. You're losing it,
Commander, and if you think your anger is going to stay
contained to one person, you're dead wrong. I've seen it happen.
I've seen someone fall apart and not even know they were beating
their own brother into the ground until it was too late. You
stay distant. You stay detached. And if you don't, then take a
day off, because your job is not to get angry. Your job is to
fight monsters and aliens and the things normal people can't --
the one thing we can't afford to fight is each other." She steps
back, though it looks as if it takes a lot of effort. She looks
back at Tony, then again at Steve. "Get your damn head on
straight," she growls, and stalks out.
