Steve hear familiar, heavy footsteps enter the room, and
he looks up to see Tony, still in his Iron Man armor with the
helmet removed. He can't help the look that's on his face, the
one of pure anger and distaste. He already knows that Tony
probably has no idea what to do or say about anything that had
happened, and it eats him to the core because Tony's the
Director, and he never seems to have anything worth saying that
won't set everybody off.
Sure enough, Tony just starts saying stuff, talking about how
all the components are registered, how that if there was a way
to find them all they needed to do so, and how they couldn't
afford letting anyone else get to them. So, in other words,
Stark states the obvious, and doesn't say anything that anyone
really needs to hear right now. However, Maria starts talking,
and Steve likes what she has to say much more, but Tony tries to
defend himself, and he should know by now that it's not working.
Just about everyone is against him, and Steve doesn't see how
he's going to get them all back at this point, because he's not
making things better, just worse.
Natasha suddenly cuts Maria off mid-sentence, fists on the
table, glaring at them with fire in her eyes. Her words rang
true, though, for they were hear to debrief, not yell some more
at Stark, sadly. He guesses that now it's his turn to say
something.
"Natasha's right," Steve simply says regarding to Natasha's
words, taking that extra step to not make any comment about
Stark. "And as for these power cores, they need to be found as
soon as possible. They've caused everyone enough trouble, and I
think that next time it should just be Stark and I who goes to
detonate them," he suggests, staring at the table, unable to
meet Tony's eyes. "I can't risk anymore of the team getting
hurt, and Stark knows the most about these things seeing as how
he created them," he goes on, trying to get his suggestion
approved. He was not willing to let anymore agents, team
members, or other loved ones getting hurt, so he needed to do
the job himself, and, sadly, also with Stark.

Tony will admit to being a little surprised as Steve
throws the idea out that next time, it should be just them next
time they're dealing with Ultron tech. Tactically, it makes
sense, but Rogers has made it very clear how much he disliked
Tony and they don't exactly make the best of teams, constantly
scowling and trying to appear miserable and angry while the
other is around.
"I second that," Maria says, her stare like daggers. Tony
glances around uncomfortably while she adds, "We've already lost
too many. Might as well have people who have actually gotten
told what they're dealing with." And Tony knows that Maria wants
him to look at her, and see the hate in her eyes, that she
blames him for everything, but he doesn't need to meet eyes with
her to tell she probably wishes him dead.
"Are you sure working with me is a good idea, Commander?" Tony
asks, staring at the table. It occurs to him how desperately he
doesn't want to go out into the field with Steve, and he wishes
for anything that would prevent him from doing so. "Mayb we
should find someone a little more technologically... inclined."
Choosing his words carefully, Tony prevents himself from saying
adept, because it's not that Steve is stupid, but, certainly,
there are people who know more about energy sources than him?
That's a good enough reason, right?

Steve turns to look at Maria as she agrees with his
plan, seeing the hate in her eyes reflected towards Tony, and
something briefly flashes through Steve's chest. Something like
sympathy for Stark due to the fact that everyone in this rooms
hates him so. However, the feeling is gone as quick as it came,
for Stark brought this upon himself, and Steve could blame no
one for hating him. Then again, Steve was pretty sure that no
one hated him as much as he did, even if he didn't necessarily
want him dead. Steve's lost a lot at the hands of Tony, too much
to ignore, and if he's not careful and doesn't think things out
more thoroughly, he could lose even more.
Suddenly, Tony's talking to him, and Steve looks at him, his
eyes going dark at Tony's question. He doesn't want to work with
Stark. He doesn't want to work next to a murderer and a coward,
but it's the best option, and, frankly, it's the only option
they have if they don't want anyone else to die. This
realization makes Steve even more angry at Stark for putting his
own stupid feeling first, because, yes, they don't get along,
but in this case, it doesn't matter because this is work, and
from now on they need to be more professional. But then Tony
makes a comment, and of course, it's another foolish comment
about Steve not being technically "inclined" enough. Steve knows
the real meaning behind his words, however.
"I've been living in this century for years, Director,
surrounded by some of the world's finest technology almost
daily. I know more about technology now than you give me credit
for. Remember who taught me, Stark," he growls, referring to
Fury, the man who taught him as much as he could about this
century before his passing, which was a lot. Fury would show him
one thing, tell him all he could about it, and Steve would
remember everything he said from that one time. Plus, after
Steve learned how to use a computer, information about things he
did not know about was easily accessible to strengthen his
knowledge. Then again, the point was was that Steve was more
than capable of detonating an Ultron power core, and had to work
with Tony to do so.

Tony glares resolutely at the table while Steve
speaks up, something of a growl in his voice as he says remember
who taught me, bringing up Fury again. It's always going to come
back to Fury, Tony thinks sourly. Fury, and everybody else that
was lost during the battle, and it's impossible to push past it.
Tony looks up, wishing a little now that he'd kept the helmet
on, because he doesn't know if the steel in his eyes is
convincing enough. It'll have to do.
"The man who taught you is dead," he says bluntly, and his words
feel like they're grating against his throat. Even if he hadn't
necessarily liked Fury, the man had earned his respect, and the
last thing Tony had wanted was for him to die. "And he can't
teach you anything else. So if we go out on the field together,
then you listen to me, or you risk getting blown up." But he
can't reverse the fact that Fury's gone, and if he has to be a
bit of a dick to get his point across, then he can do that,
because he doesn't want to - he can't - let anyone else die, or
come close to it. He glances at Maria (still staring daggers at
him), at Natasha (still staring at the table), and then back at
Steve, reaching for his helmet to take his leave (he really,
really, just wants to stop talking). "Are we clear
here?"

Steve stares fiery darts right into Tony's head as he
waits for the other man to say something, and when he does,
Steve's hands turn into fists on the table. Dead. He's so sick
of that word. Dead. The past few weeks have just been about who
is dead, and he's had enough. There's too many dead, and the
numbers keep rising, and Stark... it all comes back to Stark.
Fury's dead. He feels sick again like he had been the first time
he heard those words. However, Tony goes on, telling him that
Fury can no longer teach him anything, and whose fault is that?
The man who is telling him to follow his orders, that's who, and
Steve has half the mind to tell him that he'd rather blow up
than take orders from him, the murderer, but he doesn't.
Instead, he just continues to glare and listen to what else
Stark has to say, like if they're clear.
Steve stands up, fists at his sides like he was ready to just
walk up to Stark and beat him to the floor. The thought comes to
mind, but he resists, as always. "We're clear," he grits out
before turning to the door and leaving without another word.
He's done with all of this anyways -- all of Stark. All he can
think of when he's around is practically killing him, and that's
not like him, and he has to keep himself away... distance
himself from things that make him think those thoughts, because
as much as he despises Tony, he does not wish him dead. Not
really, anyways.
Steve walks to his office, closing the door a bit loudly behind
him. He leaves the lights off as he goes over to his desk and
sits down, placing his head in his hands, elbows on the table.
He breaths heavily, but quietly, head pounding as silence fills
his office. There's a new stack of paperwork on his desk, but
for now, he ignores it. For now, he ignores everything. Stark,
Peter, Janet, Clint, T'Challa -- everything. For now, it's just
too much to deal with, and he wishes he could just put an end to
all the chaos and destruction.

Steve confirms Tony's order, and then can't seem to
get out of there fast enough, taking off before Tony can say
another word. For a moment, Tony stares down at the table again,
before he says, "Dismissed," trying not to make it sound like a
sigh.
"Glad you two could keep your act together this time," Natasha
growls, before she's getting up too, disappearing from the room
as fast as she came. As soon as she's gone, Maria somehow finds
it within herself to voice her hate again. Tony couldn't be more
thrilled.
"You just seem to stop losing people, can you?" she snarls,
rising up out of her chair. "When are you going to learn how to
handle a problem before it becomes a crisis?"
"I didn't ask for this, Hill," Tony snaps, lifting his head to
glare at her.
"We all do things we don't want to do, Stark. There's no use
whining about it, so why don't you suck it up--"
"You are dismissed," Tony repeats, teeth clenched to keep
himself from screaming. He can't handle this right now, and he
doesn't know what Hill expects him to say. For a minute, she
looks like she's going to object, or possibly just punch him,
but the seconds pass and then she storms away, leaving Tony to
collect himself. He causes his eyes, trying to breathe. He
needs a drink or five, just needs to stop caring for five
goddamn seconds--
In the end, it really is nothing but the guilt that's keeping
him from being effective -- if it stopped mattering that people
despised him, there qouldnt be much ub his way. But he can't
find the off switch for that, he's not even sure if there is
one, and he knows pretending that he doesn't care takes a lot
more energy than he has anymore.

Steve sat alone in the dark for god knows how long
before the door slowly opens, light entering the room from the
hallways outside, shinning in like a beacon before it was gone
again, the door closing with a soft click. Silence fills the
room once more before he hears familiar footsteps approaching
his desk, and this time, it's welcomed footsteps. Footsteps that
he needs to hear and needs form them to approach him in order to
make it through every day.
"I brought you something," says Sharron, and Steve looks up,
arms lowering to lie flat on the desk. In his girlfriend's hand
lies a beautiful, red, juicy apple.
Steve smiles, and actually laughs softly. It's the first time he
has laughed in a while. He reaches out and gently takes it from
her, setting it near him on his desk, starring at it for a
little whole before asking, "How are they?"
Of course, Sharron understands immediately, frowning slightly.
"Peter has some broken ribs, but he should be fine. He's a tough
kid."
"That he is," Steve agrees before letting Sharron continue.
"T'Challa is conscious now, but he's still pretty beat up. As
for Clint, he's still out cold, but he should be up at any
minute, and Janet--" She pauses, but only for a second, always
official when it comes to these situations. "--Her heart is
beating, and it doesn't look like it'll stop anytime soon. We
have to have our doubts, though."
"I know," Steve says, almost sighing as he picks up his apple
and looks at it. "I don't doubt the worst anymore. The worst is
always what happens."
Sharron stares at Steve, expression unreadable like it is most
of the time, but finally, she lets her walls down and shows some
sadness, walking over closer to Steve, and he leans back,
allowing her to sit on his lap and wrap her arms around his
neck. "We'll be alright, though, right?" she asks softly,
running her thin, delicate fingers through his hair.
He smiles, looking down for a second before meeting Sharron's
eyes, nothing but love and admiration in his own. "Yeah,
Sharron, we'll always be alright," he promises, kissing her
softly and slowly, setting his apple back down on the desk. He
can eat it later, he's got more important things to dela with
right now.

Tony lets Bruce take the bottle, suspecting he'd fall over even
if he did want to try and refuse. "I almost killed Janet," he
slurs, closing his eyes. Maybe then Bruce will understand, and
not find him quite so disgusting.
"Hydra almost killed Janet, Tony," says Bruce calmly pulling
Tony toward the couch and setting him on it. Tony slumps
miserably against the cushions, trying to stop the room from
spinning.
"It was my tech, Bruce," he argues. "I try to erase it and it's
still showing up and hurting people, and I-- f*ck--"
"Tony," Bruce says severely, his grip on Tony's shoulders
tightening to the point where it's almost painful. "I'm not

"What, like trying to stop the man who's against himself from

"We all are," Bruce says, not addressing Tony's first comment.
He lets go and sits down beside Tony. "But we can't choose our
battles."
"Everybody hates me."
"It won't last forever."
"How do you know," Tony says dully, without any kind of
infliction.
"Nothing ever does."
Tony thinks of Rhodey and Pepper and Happy, of dead faces and
bodies and parts of the world bleeding out like they were never

Thursday, May 14th
"Stark, I found one. Clear the area."
These are the first words Steve has said to Tony all day, and he
doesn't plan on saying much else. Sharron's been talking to him
about his behavior with Stark, and they have both come to the
conclusion that even though they'd love to see him get his
comeuppance, Steve needs to keep himself together and try to
avoid Tony so he won't snap and loose his job in SHIELD and
much, much more. He knows that it doesn't matter if he hates
Stark, if he hurts him, the Council will find out, and they will
not be pleased. He's the Commander, he needs to be an example to
the team because god knows Tony can't be their example.
Steve leans over the power core, observing it before getting
down to business detonating it. So far this is the first time he
has detonated one, but he has seen Stark do it before, so he
knows what he's doing. He goes about the first few steps just
fine, counting the minutes to make sure he's giving Tony enough
time to clear the area, waiting for the last few steps.
"On your order, Stark," he says through the comm, wanting to
make sure no one else gets hurt, especially not by his own hand.
He's pretty sure most of the public hates Stark by now as well,
so he has to make sure that they have at least one person to
trust and look up to, and he'd like for that person to be him.
The billboards that used to fill the streets of Stark were now
either destroyed turning the age of Ultron, or taken down by the
city itself. The Avengers altogether basically have a bad name
now, but Stark the most, because they know who's really to
blame, who has brought all this destruction upon them.
Apparently, or, well, according to one news reporter, the reason
why people don't trust the Avengers team as much as a whole now
is because they've not only allowed Stark to stay with him, but
they've done nothing as he rose to become Director. He has to
admit, he's pretty p!ssed about not doing anything about this as
well. Something needs to be done, even if it means creating his
own team of superheroes, which... wouldn't really be a bad idea.

[shadow=#999999,left]"We create our own demons."[/shadow]
Hydra's gotten more than one power core -- through
money or force, Tony couldn't say -- but they've managed to
track down a few with the serial numbers, and more are popping
up every day. Tony doesn't know how many there are, but it's
better than keeping all of them out and about. So Tony, of
course, guns blazing, repulsors blasting, had gone in first, a
distraction, while the Commander had slipped in. It had seemed
like a good plan, he supposes it still is, but he hadn't counted
on this many targets to take out.
He hears Rogers on the comm, telling him he's found the power
core, and Tony swings his arm out, clearing away another swarm
of agents. Grimly, he looks around, trying to find Steve's heart
signature among the mass of other bodies. It's a distraction he
can't really afford; a second later, he's blasted by some kind
of energy weapon, enough force behind it to send the Iron Man
armor to go flying backwards. Tony hits the wall hard enough to
crack the plaster, and stays dazed for several seconds as the
Hydra goons close in on him, and Steve says on your order,
waiting on him.
"Give me a minute," Tony says roughly, trying to clear a path.
He finally does figure out where Steve is -- a floor below him,
with a pack of Hydra agents heading toward him. Tony doesn't
take long to guess what they're trying to go get. "You have
trouble coming your way. Take as many out as you can, don't let
them get to the power core." He knows that if that happens, the
thing will probably disappear for a week and end up in some
highly-populated area, which is exactly what they're trying to
prevent. Finally, Tony struggles out of the giant group of
agents attacking him, and tries to find a staircase, an elevator
shaft, a window, anything to get to Rogers. It will be easier
