A cracking sound echoed through the air, followed by a
cry of pain as Steve's shield collided with the face of an agent
of Hydra. He's tired of dealing with these people almost as much
as he's tired of dealing with Ultron sh*t. Quickly, he makes a
sharp turn, knocking away yet another Hydra agent who had been
trying to attack him from behind. He sees Stark and Peter
fighting a little ways away, Tony defending the younger Avenger
who has more focused on the agents in front of him more than the
ones behind him. At least Steve can give Tony respect for
something -- his fighting skills. Then again, he's still rather
unorganized and sticks to his simple plan of attack which is
just to attack, rather than coming up with useful strategies. It
seems like no matter what, Steve can always find more fault in
Stark.
Steve swings back around, taking down more and more Hydra agents
before he hears Tony's voice over the comm, telling someone to
go and help Natasha. He glances behind him quickly, seeing
Natasha surrounded by Hydra, but taking care of herself quite
well. The woman tells Tony herself that help won't be necessary,
and Steve believes her, focusing on his own Hydra agents
instead. It's not long, however, before he hears someone else
yell out in pain, but this time, the voice is familiar.
He quickly throws his shield at a certain angle, taking out the
rest of the Hydra members around him, giving him enough time to
turn around and see Peter on his knees, holding his side before
another Hydra agent punches him on the side of his face. Steve
runs towards him, gritting his teeth, eyes searching for Tony
who is yards away with Natasha. He throws his shield again,
hitting the most of the Hydra around Spider-Man, hitting the
rest with his fist and kicking them with his feet.
"Are you alright?" Steve asks Peter, voice low as he holds out
his hand. Peter takes it, lifting his mask up to his nose to try
to wipe away some blood dripping from his busted lip, but ends
up smearing it instead.
"I'm fine," he replies, letting go of Steve's hand once he
shakily gets to his feet, lowering his mask and brushing himself
off, still gripping his side. A few cracked ribs, surely. The
kid handles himself well, but not well enough...
"Stark," Steve growls into his comm once he's sure Peter's
alright. "Peter is hurt. Natasha can take care of yourself. Get
your ass back over here!" he shouts, angry.
Peter shoots some of his webs at approaching Hydra, knocking
some of them to the ground. "Honestly, Steve, I'm fine. I got
this, he tries to reassure Steve, but Steve knows Peter, and
knows what he's all about. Parker hates it when people fight,
and he hates choosing sides, so instead, he chooses both.
Therefore, Peter is one of the few who still likes Tony after
all he has done, but also likes Steve just as much. The kid's
still trying to prove himself to be a worthy Avenger, and is too
distracted to see what an idiot Tony is.
"You wouldn't have gotten hurt if Stark hadn't of left his
post," Steve tells him shortly, simply, pressing his comm again.
"Stark, I won't say it again, get over here!"

Natasha scowls at him, her hands clenched into fists,
and he's sorry, he's sorry but how much more would he have hated
himself if she did need help and he stayed where he was? And he
wishes he could say that, wishes there was a way to say that
without sounding like a coward, but there's not, and he's left
to stare at Natasha, and keep the face-plate down, because he
can't actually look her in the eyes. He wants to apologize, and
not just for this mistake. Rogers' voices comes almost as a
relief to Tony -- he needs to get away from Natasha.
Peter is hurt, the Commander says, and Tony's heart plummets.
Steve's already yelling at him through the comm, so god knows
how bad it is.
He leaves Natasha without a second glance, lets her go back to
fighting, and he lands in front of Steve, glad that you can't
read Iron Man's face. Peter looks... a little bruised and
battered, but not much worse for wear, thankfully. He's holding
himself like he trying to prove there's nothing wrong, and, Tony
knows how that feels, wanting to prove yourself. He hopes Peter
never feels the flip side -- proving yourself, and then watching
your carefully-built world collapse like a house of cards. "He's
fine," Tony says, any tension in his voice replaced with the
harsh metallic tones of Iron Man's. The suit and I are one, he
thinks he said once. "I saw Black Widow go down -- you going to
yell at me for helping a teammate, Commander?"

Stark flies over pretty swiftly, landing right in front
of Steve. Peter mumbles something about not needing a
babysitter, beating up some Hydra goons as well as he could
managed with cracked ribs. Steve really wishes he could see
Stark's face, too, because he wants to know how he's feeling
about this because, really, this is unacceptable, leaving a boy
to defend for himself amongst tons of Hydra. Peter's only, what,
seventeen? Maybe even younger?
Tony looks at Peter, saying he's fine and that Steve shouldn't
yell at him for helping another teammate. Steve scoffs, looking
from Peter to Natasha to Tony. "Natasha practically grew up
fighting, Stark, if she needed your help she would've asked for
it," he snaps, stepping closer towards the man in the suit. "If
anyone needs help here, it's Peter. I put you with him to keep
things like this," Steve motions to the boy holding his side,
"from happening. What's his aunt going to say when he comes home
with cracked lips and a busted lip?"
"Skateboarding accident," Peter grumbles, leaping away from the
two to go fight more Hydra.
"We've lost enough people this week, Stark, do you really want
us to loose another one? Especially one that's no less than a
kid with a whole life ahead of him?" Steve challenges, stepping
even closer to Tony, the other man only about an inch or two
taller than him in the suit. "Stop melding in the affairs of
others, Director, and start doing your job!"

Tony raises his chin in defiance as Steve starts to
argue with him -- or maybe just at him, really. Tony wants to
say that feels as touhh as he's trying to look, but he really,
really doesn't. He doesn't know how to feel. He was trying to
help. He's not a soldier, he can't watch people go down and just
keep going, he wants to protect people, that what Ultron was
about--
And maybe this is how to make him angry, make him feel
something. He's confused, and guilty, and he doesn't understand,
and there's a part of him that really wishes he weren't so much
of a coward to be above punching Steve in the face. "You wanna
think about taking a step back, Commander?" Tony growls, just as
much venom in his voice as Steve's. He's not angry at Steve,
he's just... just angry, and he can't help how he sounds.
"Uh, there's a thing over here," Wasp says into the comm. "Care
to take a look, Director?" Tony doesn't reply -- maybe he can't
hear her for the blood rushing in his ears, or maybe he just
needs to vent before he can actually stop spitting his words
out.
"I'm not sure if you've noticed, but meddling in the affairs of
others is the Director's job. I'm not about to apologize for
trying to be a decent human being." Trying. (He doesn't know
what to do or how to handle this, he doesn't know how to
apologize anymore, maybe it's too late for that--)
"He's too busy squabbling," Clint sighs, surely watching
everything unfold from the top of a building, or something.
"Coming down to you."
"Learn to grow up, Rogers -- the world doesn't conform to your
lines. You don't have to throw a fit every time something
doesn't go your way. I am keeping people safe -- I am doing my
job -- now learn how to do yours."

Steve laughs darkly as Tony tells him to take a step
back, wanting nothing more than to take another step forward if
he had the room. He's tired of Stark trying to be the bigger man
in every situation when everybody knows he's nothing but talk.
Then Tony goes on, the voices in his comm nothing but noises as
he glares at Tony, wanting to just rip off that damn faceplate
of his and punch him square in the nose. That would be him being
generous. However, through everything Tony says, it's the last
few sentences that get him, making him furious beyond belief.
"I grew up years ago, Stark! I grew up when I was nothing but a
boy on his own with no family to care or him while a few years
later, you get everything under the sun that you could ever
possibly dream of! You have no idea what I've been through,
Stark, so stop pretending like you do!" Steve shouts, clenching
his fists tight, body shaking with the purest of hate and anger.
"Wasp, Hawkeye, I'm on my way to see what the problem is," comes
Black Panther's voice through the comm.
"You know nothing about me, and you hardly even know anything
about yourself. Everyone hates you and people are dead because
of you, Stark, how's that for keeping people safe and doing your
job, huh?"
Just then there was a loud boom, and Steve stops yelling at Tony
and turns his head to see smoke rising over some buildings.
"Director! Commander! There's been an accident involving an
Ultron power core. Janet, Clint, and T'Challa have been
injured," says Ant-Man through the comms, sounding distressed
and perhaps a bit p!ssed.
"Damnit," Steve says under his breath before rushing to where
the smoke was to see what had happened. Once again, the only
people he has to blame is himself and, of course,
Stark.

[shadow=#999999,left]"We create our own demons."[/shadow]
Tony wants to be indignant as Steve yells at him,
saying he's gotten everything he wants -- because that's not
true, Tony was rich but he wasn't happy, he's still not, how
could be want all of this -- but the words on his tongue die as
Steve continues, saying "people are dead because of you." And
what can Tony say to that, really? Rogers is right. It is his
fault -- Ultron, and Fury, and damn near everything that's been
happening to them. He can't come back from what he's done, he
can never come back from that, and Steve can't be the only one
to see it, he can't be the only one to see how Tony's hands are
stained red--
There's a sudden boom, and a few moments of silence that feel
like years.
When Ant-Man starts speaking, Tony hears the word power core and
is already taking off, deaf to the world. The power core is the
part that explodes when an Ultron detonates -- and if you're not
far enough away, you're dead. The heat the power core gives off
is similar to that of an Extremis virus failing -- Tony had
based the detonation off of Extremis, needing it to be powerful
enough to decimate an Ultron unit -- and, as such, anything too
close in disintegrated. Anything not that close is blasted full
of shrapnel. Tony would know.
He's not sure how much harder his heart can beat until it gives
out.
Tony doesn't know what else to expect when he gets there --
there's a crater where there should be what's still left of the
streets and the buildings around it, and on the perimeter of
that crater Tony can see Clint and T'Challa, on their backs and
battered. JARVIS picks up their vitals almost immediately --
shaky, but there -- and Tony searches frantically for Janet.
"--people are dead because of you--"
--and it could happen again--
He finds her -- right in the center of the crater, like she'd
rolled into it -- and flies over, flipping his mask up. Wasp and
Ant-Man have only been part of the Avengers for a few months,
but they're still part of the team, they're still important, and
Tony can't have somebody else just gone. Janet has grown to full
size again, burns covering the parts of her skin that's been
exposed, along with the cuts and bruises that she received from
shrapnel. She looks bad, bloody and battered, and JARVIS is
displaying only the faintest of heartbeats.
"Get medical over here," Tony says urgently into the comm,
kneeling by Janet's form. He notices all too well that his voice
is shaking. "Hank, Peter, anybody, get them right now."

When Steve arrives at the scene of the chaos, Tony not
far behind him, his heart immediately starts racing, but he
keeps himself under control. Clint and T'Challa are breathing,
only a little damage showing up on them, the least on T'Challa,
but Janet was no where to be found. Tony starts looking for her
along with him, and finds her first, right in the center of the
explosion. At the announcement of needing medical attention,
Steve rushes over to Janet's side, Hank doing so as well. Hank
is the first one on his knees, throwing aside his helmet and
checking her pulse. He doesn't look pleased.
"Peter, get some medical attention!" Steve repeats, tone more
down-to-earth as he kneels by Janet, observing her wounds,
checking her pulse for himself which is slow. She doesn't look
good at all, bruised and cut and broken. When he looks back at
Hank, there is a fire burning in his eyes that wasn't there
before, Peter announcing on the comm that he was going to get
help. Hank is starring down at Janet, his hands fists by his
sides. Steve knows the anger, however, is not reflected towards
Janet.
"Why don't you go get medical attention, Director! Actually, why
don't you get as far away from us as possible, because it seems
like everywhere you go, innocent people get hurt!" Hank shouts,
scooping Janet up in his arms and holding her close. "What kind
of leader are you, Tony? Your own team is getting hurt thanks to
you! This isn't peace, this is punishment," he growls before he
starts walking off, trying to get Janet to doctors faster.
Steve remains quiet, glaring at Stark as if to say "I told you
so." He's glad that finally someone else sees Stark for what he
is, but right now, he needs to focus on his injured team mates.
Swiftly, he goes over to T'Challa and Clint, checking their
pulses, studying their injuries. Medical help comes over fast,
surrounding Clint and T'Challa and politely shooing Steve away.
He pressing the comm link inside his ear, saying, "Everyone fall
back. Get to the Helicarrier as soon as possible." Then, he
turns back to Tony, hatred in his eyes. "That means you too,
Director. I think you've done enough for today." And with that,
Steve's headed back to the Helicarrier, shield on his back and
blood on his suit, ready to focus on his injured teammates and
debriefing.

[shadow=#999999,left]"We create our own demons."[/shadow]
Tony knows, partly, what to expect as Hank comes
over. Because, Janet -- she could die -- she's more fragile than
ever right now, and it's because of him, he knows, because he
couldn't get all of the Ultron tech out of the way fast enough,
and it's blown up in his face, again. So as Hank stands, and
starts shouting, Tony doesn't know what else to do, or what to
say, and he knows that his silence will probably be taken as
some act of defiance, but he just can't seem to find any words.
There are apologies, of course, so close to spilling past his
lips, but he already knows people won't accept them. Won't they
just be more lies, even if he's sincere about it? Isn't that how
this works, now?
When Hanks whirls around and stalks off, Janet limp in his arms,
Tony manages to stand. He stares at the center of the crater and
tries not to feel Steve's eyes on him, tries not to think about
everything he'll have to try to do to fix this, to try and seem
like he's still a decent human being.
(He has to try, but it won't matter anyways. He knows there's no
redemption for him.)
Tony flips his mask back down when he hears Steve's voice,
telling everyone to fall back. Hydra seems to have cleared out,
as well, or possibly died in the explosion. He knows he's seen
more than a few uniformed bodies around, as well. Then Steve
turning back to him, his voice cold as he tells Tony he's done
enough. And even though he knows Steve is right, there's still
the part of Tony that wants to yell at him, tell him I wasn't
the only one fighting, wants to hurt him, because Steve is
self-righteous, he's an ass hole when he wants to be, and Tony
doesn't need any helping hating himself, he doesn't need this--
"Taking my own way back, Commander. See you there." Tony rarely
flies in the Quinjet with the whole team, but this time he knows
he can't, and he knows nobody wants him to, either. Without
another word he takes off, blasting into the air and letting the
roar of the repulsors fill his ears, focuses on feeling that low
mechanic hum that separates him from the outside world. He
thinks it's better like that -- separate.
Somehow, it's only been a couple weeks since he chose to try and
block out the world.

The whole ride back to the Helicarrier on the Quinjet
was fairly silent. The medical team continued to watch over
their fallen team members while Hank paced back and forth until
Steve finally instructed him to sit down and put his seat belt
on. A nurse even came over to Peter, cleaning up the blood on
his face and telling him he'll also have to go to the infirmary
about his ribs. Everyone was worried, tired, and some of them,
fuming. Steve felt like he should say something to them, but he
knew he had nothing to say that wasn't already on their minds,
and he'd have plenty of time for words once they started
debriefing.
When they arrive back on the Helicarrier, the medical team place
Janet, Clint, and T'Challa on stretchers, rolling them as fast
as they can to the infirmary, Peter walking awkwardly behind
them, a nurse trying to help support him, but he waves her away,
saying that he's fine. Steve watches them go, and Hank asks if
he can skip debriefing and go with Janet instead. He nods,
knowing it must be hard for Hank since Janet means so much to
him. Steve would probably be an even bigger mess if Sharon were
to get hurt. Speaking of Sharon, she was there too, watching the
injured team members leave before walking over to Steve and
asking him what had happened.
"An Ultron power core detonated," he replies quietly and simply,
his mind focusing on other things as he led the team into the
debriefing room, noticing that Stark had yet to arrive. Sharon
follows him, giving him a kiss on the cheek before leaving,
Steve watching her as she goes, wishing she could stay and make
everything a little easier. Steve doesn't even say a word,
doesn't even say that they should wait for Tony, he just merely
sits down and lets the silence fill his ears, placing his head
in his hands and waiting, waiting for anything because Steve's
tired of being the one who makes the first stand.

Tony knows the meeting room will be fairly empty,
besides Steve, and Maria, and a few others. He highly doubts
Hank will be there -- which, after what had happened, is
probably a good thing. He lands in the Helicarrier and tries to
ignore the blood on the floor (Clint's or Janet's or T'Challa's,
there's always blood now--), making his way to the debrief. He
doesn't bother taking off the suit, and only removes the helmet
after some serious consideration. The armor is flawless, besides
a few dings from bullets and the occasional crushed Hydra
helmet, and it's so much better than trying to stand alone and
look like his own composure isn't cracking.
He walks into the room, and is met with three separate looks,
all alike in one thing: anger. Steve, Natasha, Maria. That's it.
That's all there is, that's all that's left, and Tony scrambles
for something to say. He's Director now. He needs to do
something, do his job.
"All the components are registered," he blurts, because he
doesn't know what else to focus on. "They have serial numbers,
if there's a way to track them all, we need to find it. We can't
afford to let anyone else get to them." We can't afford to lose
anybody else.
"Maybe it should have clued you in," Maria says, her teeth
clenched, "that Ultron was a bad idea when every single part of
it could be used as a weapon."
Tony stares at her and works his throat for a sound. He makes a
big deal out of setting his helmet down on the table so he can
have a little time to get his words together. "It was a defense
system," he responds quietly, "Ultron was a weapon to begin
with. It was approved."
"When did you become so desperate for approval that you would
risk the safety of--
"It's irrelevant," Natasha spits, not even looking at him. Her
fists are clenched on the table, and she is, instead, glaring
forlornly at those. "We're here to debrief. Let's
debrief."
