A Hole too Big to Mend (tag: MOSES)

STONE KINGDOM ~ 12 years ago
       There had been a raid.
It had come swift and sudden on the wind.... the battle had
lasted hours some dead many more taken prisoner. Many chains,
swords and steel had tried to hold her but there was no bindings
forged by man alone that could hold her down. But what was one
warrior against hundreds? she was bruised, cut, beaten it was by
pure will she was still standing. Hooves dragging along the
sand, she had run.... she had diverted enough of them away....
Others would escape feeling back into their wastelands
       waiting.... for her perhaps.
But her head hung low.... she finally was at the end of her
limit when she saw the well and proceeded to fall lightly
against it. Settling in the sand.... a beautiful yet terrible
       sight....
A nightmare not one of dreams but of reality. Slowly mending
       from her wounds.

It had taken a fortnight for him to find her again, and she
looked in a bad way. Surrounded by at least a hundred soldiers,
and her back to the canyon wall, there looked to be no escape
for her... At least to his eyes.
Raising his staff in hand, he struck it down upon the rock face,
causing the rock to split with a flash. From the wound in the
once pristine rock wall millions of hornets, gnats, and cicadas
flew into the air, and descended onto the soldiers. As the
soldiers ran and attempted to protect themselves from the insect
onslaught, he stepped forth and looked at the crest the soldiers
       carried.
"From the Spirit Kingdom, eh? They are getting bolder, my Lady.
Did I not warn you about underestimating your opponents?" Moses
asked Amalthea, the Lady in White.

She had tried to rest to conserve her energy for one final
strike before she hear the rock splitting looking up and seeing
the storm of insects. For a moment she let out a small quiet
sigh of relief. Chuckling and letting out a small snort once
Moses approached her ".... they have not killed me yet.... but
it is good.... it means that bastard is scared. I want him
terrified, terrified till the day I rip his heart out" her voice
cold and hard but also excited at that last bit as she softly
moved to get up to her hooves but a white arrow buried into her
leg caused her great pain and she settled back down.
Tossing that lovely mane in frustration before attempting to get
up again only to this time barely remain standing but she could
not hold it. She shifted to prevent herself from collapsing, now
in her human form... bleeding as she slid down the rock. She was
bare, her pale skin covered with dark bruises and deep gashes.
It was obvious that they had caught her off guard somehow. And
she had paid the price tenfold on it.

"Scared indeed." Moses replied, looking at the soldiers starting
to regroup as the swarm started to dissipate. They had come a
long way for the White Lady, but then again... So had Moses.
"Stay down, Amalthea. It's time for me to be your sword." Moses
said, as he stepped forward, facing the armed soldiers with only
       his staff.
The soldiers started to laugh, and one stepped forward, tossing
       his armor and weapons aside.
"I'll at least make it fair for you Sheppard, but I would advise
you to walk away." The soldier scoffed, raising his balled fists
into a boxing position. The soldier's stance told Moses that he
       was a skilled boxer, but...
       CRACK!
With an upwards swing of his staff, Moses connected with the jaw
of the cocky soldier. The man crumpled onto the canyon floor,
blood trickling out of his ears, dead. With one swing, Moses had
       split his skull.
"No different from defending my flock from a pack of
lion-bears." Moses insisted as the other soldiers surrounded
       him.

She stayed there her long white hair acting as a cover hiding
her injured body she watched Moses a small part of her felt....
happy, glad even that this man who had once been terrified of
her now fought for her. Protected her even tough she knew
ometimes he wished for her to look for peace instead of war.
Taking a moment to divert her gaze to the arrow in her leg as
she broke the tip off pulling out the shaft as she gasp in pain
       forcing it back down.
As moses fought and looked to be winning she slowly began to get
to her feet confidant Moses would do his duty that is until she
saw an archer aim right at him. Moses was a great man and now
powerful perhaps more so then herself but he was still mortal.
She didn't hesitate appear before him in a haze of black to
quickly try and conjure a shield and for a second it worked but
she was exhausted and her magic waned the shield cracked. The
arrow puncturing on through to burry itself into her side.

When the arrow pierced into Amalthea's side, all logic and
reason left Moses; only anger remained. A guttural growl rose up
from deep within him, and as he opened his mouth, the Spirit
Kingdom soldiers charged forth with their swords and spears. It
       was their final mistake.
From Moses' mouth, a swarm of flesh-eating beetles flew out,
smothering every soldier in the canyon. As Moses helped Amalthea
lie back down, the canyon walls echoed with the soldiers'
terrified cries as the beetles consumed them.
"At least I didn't call forth the fires from above this time.
Now, let me look at that." Moses insisted, inspecting Amalthea's
wound, trying to figure out the best way to remove the arrow.
Now the only sound in the canyon to be heard was the wing beats
of thousands of tiny beetles, humming away as Moses tended to
       Amalthea's injuries.

The arrow had buried itself deep into her her blood staining the
white arrow, as she leaned on Moses making no complaints except
a small grunt of pain when he laid her down ".... this... would
be.... the second time I saved you" she said with a bit of a
bitter chuckle "If I didnt know any better, i'd think you were
doing it... just to get my attention" Over the time they had
spent together Amalthea had warmed up to Moses letting him see
behind the cold warrior most others saw.
Taking pained breaths as she looked at her own wound "Mmmm....
i've lived through worse.... though... I think the bastard
blessed the arrows cause it burns. Remind me to return the
       favour"

"Blessed... And laced with curare... A deadly combination for
man and nightmare, so long as it hits something vital." Moses
said with a stern face, finishing his examination of both the
wound, and one of the other arrows.
"It's deep, but fortunately, it missed your organs and blood
vessels. Your luck never ceases to amaze me, Amalthea... Or
perhaps the gods wish for your success?" Moses smiled, trying to
       stay positive.
"What worries me at this point is the shape of the arrow head
itself," He held one of the other arrows to Amalthea for her to
see the wicked barbs running down the arrow head.
"These arrows are designed to cause more damage when they're
removed - the blessing and the poison are 'salt in the wound',
to create enough pain to make you pull the arrow out and tear
yourself apart. I'll have to be careful with this..." Moses said
as he reached into his robes and pulled out a small pouch.
"And for the record, you only saved me after I saved you - and
the score stands at 9 to 8, in my favor." Moses smiled, and then
groaned. The beetle attack was certainly something he never
       wanted to experience again... ever.

Amalthea just tried to hide any pain she felt huffing softly as
she took deep breaths gently moving to settle against him "Uhh-
well then... remind me to give you a gift once all this is
over... If I could Moses I would help you take those powers of
your away but... for now I think they are proving to be quite
useful yes?" chuckling at that before cringing in pain "ugh- it
hurts to laugh... remind me to never do that again"
letting out a small sigh as she rested against him covered by
her long white hair that draped around her ".... He will pay for
this... his archer made a very stupid mistake.... he didnt kill
me.... I actually feel good that he did... I was... getting to
       complacent here"

"My powers?" Moses gave a bit of a scoff as he pulled out knife,
a piece of flint, some alcohol, a needle and some thread from
       the pouch he had.
"My curse is more appropriate. That silver-tongued demon,
Sutekh, has turned me into an abomination... I can't stay in one
place for too long, lest I risk everyone around me being
       destroyed."
Striking the blade of the knife against the flint, Moses started
a small fire, to sterilize his tools for the surgery. The air
stirred, and seemed to get colder at the sound of Sutekh the
Destroyer's name, but Moses payed it no mind.
"Sutekh struck me where I was weakest, and preyed upon it - to
make me its emissary of destruction. I denied it, abandoning the
demon to its prison... And then I came to you, hoping I could
use this curse to do good."
Moses paused as he looked right at Amalthea.
"My Lady... We say we are here to liberate the people from
tyranny and create a new world united... But it feels like we've
been only committing atrocities, behaving like demons,
pillaging, and ravaging village after village..."
Tears welled up in Moses' eyes, but they refused to trickle down
       his face.
"Is it no wonder they think we are heartless? When we act no
better than Sutekh and the Demonborn?"
