       I Won't Leave You

The escape was narrow. Belle should have predicted being so
close to Maleficent would result in an assault from her. But had
she known help would come in an unlikely form, Belle wouldn't be
in this mess. Using her battered arm, she applied a healing
spell to her injuries. Her face was covered in blood and scarred
from the ogre's punches. She would've been a pulp if not for for
the injured dragon mage lying next to her. Zuko had come from
nowhere with his fire magic. The ogres had fled with their
eyebrows singed off and a few burn marks...but not after giving
Zuko a nice sock in the gut and beat on the head.
Dragon Roost was the first place Belle took him. Her
priorities were to get herself healed before focusing on him.
Now able to move freely, Belle finally took the opportunity to
check the head injury - by removing his hood. A mop of jet black
hair fell over his face. As Belle pushed it back, she blushed.
She had never really touched a man's hair. Her fingers brushed
through the strands delicately before finding the large knot
above the left eye. Breathing, she very carefully lay him onto
his back so he was facing her. "I'm sorry," she whispered half
to herself, half to him. Belle relocated the knot before
applying a cold compress she improvised using part of her tunic
and some water she drew from the air. She had not noticed the
odd raised area of his skin until her hand accidentally brushed
it. Looking down, Belle stifled a gasp; his entire left eye was
raw, almost to the point where it could be permanently burned
shut. Was this a reason he wore the hood? Belle shook the
thought aside; her priority was to make sure he was all right.
By some miracle he stirred as he pressed the compress closer.
Belle opened her mouth to say something but was stopped by his
hand coming on top of hers. He was somewhat unconscious, but
that one movement showed he was all right. Feebly, he
       half-whispered, "Belle..."
"Shh..." she removed the cloth. "Good; you're coming to your
       senses."
       "You stayed..."
"Of course I stayed. I couldn't leave you to be turned into
       mulch by ogres."
"You should've left when you had the chance."
"No. I'm not going to leave any ally in harm's way. It's my
code," Belle's tone was firm. "Besides, consider this a
       repayment."
"What do you mean by that?" Zuko looked at her,
       disorientated.
"You saved my life, now I'm saving yours." Belle carefully
applied the healing spell onto the bruised chest area. Again,
she blushed. Was it possible she was sensing his pulse
somewhere? Her thoughts returned to healing. Why am I so
flustered? Belle thought to herself when she finished. I keep
thinking thoughts I shouldn't be. After all, Zuko was her ally,
not some prince wanting to woo her. Was it that Belle really
wanted to be wooed by him because she found herself...physically
attracted to him? "It's not like I'm in love," she accidentally
       said out loud.
       "What?" Zuko asked suddenly.
"Uh..." Belle stammered. What has she just done? "Sorry. I
got...sidetracked," she blushed fiercely now, her face on fire.
"You know, Zuko, you're lucky I rescued you; that ogre could've
       crushed your heart."
Just as Belle's hands were leaving his chest, they were
immediately pressed back down. Belle found herself looking into
Zuko's eyes as he was caressing the top of her hand. They were
some of the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. The gentle
golden color was inviting and embracing. Belle could have
drowned in their warmth. He wasn't even saying anything but his
eyes spoke for him. "Thank you."
