Advanced bio info and requirements.

[font=arial]In order to get yourself advanced-board enabled, you
must make an advanced bio, which unlike the general bios needs
the approval of a staff member. These bios need to be
well-written with good grammar, punctuation, spelling, and clear
communication.

FAQs

What is Advanced Roleplay?
Unlike general roleplay, advanced roleplay is for writers that
have achieved a higher level of literature and writing skill.
Usually this comes with experience and time, as it takes a while
to develop a character properly and to get a knack for good
roleplaying pieces. If you are an advanced roleplayer, you will
be enabled to the advanced boards, where other highly achieved
writers could interact and roleplay at this level. There is no
limit to the minimum of sentences in a post, but one or two
liners are frowned upon; a good paragraph or so is considered
satisfactory. These posts are usually more literate,
descriptive, and clearly written than general posts, with less
grammar and spelling errors.
What are the requirements, exactly?
Along with the minimum number of sentences, perfect spelling and
good flow is what the staff look for. Choppy sentences, while
seeming to be easy to avoid, are actually the most common
mistakes in an advanced bio. Here is, in a nutshell, what we
look for.
-- Good grammar.
Don't mistake words for each other, and always remember to read
over your work; spell out numbers instead of just typing them. A
staff member will alert you if you there are issues involving
grammar.
-- Good punctuation.
Spaces after periods and commas, capitulation, proper use of
semi-colons, commas, and quotation marks are all mandatory.
-- Perfect spelling.
And I mean PERFECT. In roleplay you could doze off a bit, let a
finger slip or not bother to check that word up. But in the
Advanced Bio, all the words must be spelled perfectly; a staff
member will alert you if there is a misspelled word. Go over
your bio or put it in a Spell-Checking application, like
Microsoft Word.
-- Flowing sentences.
She has grey fur. She has amber eyes. Her head is round. See how
choppy these sentences are? We're looking for nice long
sentences that don't jump and that flow well- examples of choppy
sentences and how to lengthen them are below the Frequently
Asked Questions.
-- Clear communication.
Does your cat have orange or brown fur? Wait, grey? This is
something that's very important; please communication your
thoughts clearly! We don't want to have a cat that's tall and
short, fat and thin, and a dirty scamp that washes often.
-- Realistic features/bases.
Make sure that your cat doesn't have wings or purple fur! This
is unrealistic, and could be a violation of the Site Rules,
which we didn't put up yet.
It's taking sooo long to get mine approved! What should I do?
Staff members are not online 24/7, so all you could do is be
patient. If your bio isn't approved after 6 hours, give it
another bump. If it's not approved another 6 hours after that,
PM a staff member with a link to the advanced bio. Do not bump
any more than needed, as this will push other unapproved bios
down.
My bio got denied. What do I do now?
Don't worry, becoming an advanced roleplayer takes time. Keep
roleplaying, take up tutoring lessons, and don't be afraid to
ask a staff for help! After a while, go on ahead and make
another bio; soon enough you'll be good enough to be accepted
into the advanced boards.
What does semi-advanced mean?
Semi-advanced roleplay, or intermediate roleplay, is a type of
roleplay that requires the posts to follow advanced guidelines
to a certain extent, but are posted on general boards. These
roleplays usually require good literature and grammar, as well
as good writing skill, but their expectations are more relaxed
than advanced roleplays and do not require advanced-board
enablement. Semi-advanced are good how developing writers that
are on their way to advanced but are simply not good enough.
Guidelines for semi-advanced roleplays are laid out by the
founder of the thread and usually range from three to eight
sentences minimum.

Making your advanced bio
[spoiler][font=arial]Step one: Brainstorming.
So, first things first. Got an idea in your head? Good. A sketch
of your character should be floating around in your head, just
waiting for you to pin it onto some paper. Let's take...
Adderswipe. A quick description of him would be... say, loyal,
friendly, aggressive, and sharp-tongued. Brown tabby fur, green
eyes, and a scar on his left flank. Alright, now we would have
to flesh him out.
For advanced bios we accept both third and first person, though
writing in first person would mean taking the character's
personality in account. Would a polite, quiet she-cat start
screaming curses at you for no apparent reason? No.
Step two: Breaking it Down.
Breaking down the appearance is somewhat simple. Take body size,
fur color, markings, eye color, face shape, feature description
{whiskers, ears, etc.} and distinctive features, mix them up
with smooth sentences, and put it out into the appearance
section. Bam. Personality works in pretty much the same way;
take the strongest, most outstanding traits, and then smooth
them over the smaller personality profiles of the cat. A wise
elder is good. But a wise, sharp-tongued, stuck-up and
mischievous elder is even better. History plays a good part in
personality; perhaps the cat had a terrible memory that haunted
them in their dreams? Maybe the tom-cat looks innocent now but
still has that trouble-making urge deep inside of him? It's your
cat.
Step three: Fleshing it out and Adding Detail.
Address each one of the cat's features with more attention,
perhaps making each one more descriptive than before, adding
interjections from the cat to defy it's personality and
appearance if you're writing in first person. Use descriptive
words and helpful references; The tom has green eyes sounds far
less exciting than It was no wonder his parents named this
tomcat Greeneyes; those orbs shone with a forest-like hue,
doesn't it? How did he get that scar? Why is that she-cat scared
of water? Keep on going.
Step four: Revising and Correcting.
Check for choppy sentences by reading it aloud; if it sounds
okay to you, it probably sounds okay to a staffer. Spelling and
grammar could be checked in Microsoft word, but the thing you
have to remember is to type out the numbers. Make sure the cat
has a realistic history and appearance; a starving, wounded kit
would not be able to survive for three months in the freezing
cold winter.
Step five: Additional Requirements and Things to Avoid.
The title of your bio should be Character's name of Character's
clan; but if this is NOT your first advanced bio, other titles
such as lyrics or quotes are allowed. The title should be
readable and free of mistakes, and if you're still working on
the bio {you don't have to finish it in one immediately} put the
word 'WIP' in the title; it stands for Work In Progress.
Pictures, quotes, lyrics, and layouts are accepted, as long as
it's organized and easy to read.
In bios:
Avoid unrealistic cats, choppy sentences, and Mary-Sue Kitties.
What are Mary-Sue kitties? Actually, these cats are quite common
in general roleplays; see if you could recognize them. They
-- are loyal, brave, smart, beautiful, powerful, and kind;
goodie kitties.
-- have a prophecy that they must 'save the world'.
-- may have a defect that does not, in any way affect them. {eg.
lame leg that doesn't affect walking patterns, damaged eye that
doesn't impair vision, etc.}
-- have special markings that aren't naturally available in the
real world.
-- have kits loving them to pieces.
-- are irresistible to the opposite sex.
-- have a deep, troubled past that holds many secrets.
-- could survive extremes {eg. falling from a gorge and not
dying, going moons without food or water in a desert/mountain,
etc.}
-- have an inexplicable vast knowledge about herbs.
-- perfect everything in one try.
Make sure it's balanced! If they're terribly beautiful, have a
nasty personality to go along with it, for example.
Roleplaying:
As in bios, use good grammar etc. as well as a few other things
to keep in mind.
1. Keep in touch with a character's personality.
Why does a hard-hearted, cruel cat suddenly seem friendly and
open? Unless the cat is acting {which should be listed in the
traits}, then there's really no reason for it. If your character
is getting a change of personality, make sure it's slow and
gradual, unless a traumatizing event {eg. death, losing one's
mind, etc.} occurred.
2. Do not 'suddenly know everything'.
How does your cat suddenly get the idea that marigold would heal
that wound without earlier experience with herbs? How does it
know that cat's name without ever meeting it/hearing about it
before? How did it master the hunter's crouch in one try? This
all falls in the category of unrealistic, and is a HUGE no-no in
advanced roleplays. Keep in mind that this is Redpaw's first
solo hunt, that this kit is still too young to speak, and that
Valleyhills can't heal that cat because he never had experience
with herbs before.
3. Impossible things are impossible.
Oh goodness, this I cannot stress enough. What are the chances
that Littlepaw could take down that deer? Is it possible that
the rouge could escape four clan cats in their prime? No. But.
Unless the roleplayer has given you permission to kill/hurt
their character, you may not do those things. Let the cat get
away, or else this would be considered powerplaying.
4. Remember disabilities and handicaps.
If Rollingclouds has a blind left eye, he can't see what's on
his left. Simple as that. Remember that Rollingclouds has a
blind eye, and roleplay with this in mind. If the body part is
healing, you could describe maybe that he was starting to make
out vague shapes or ghostly figures, but remember that unless
you are double-timing/time-skipping your character, there is no
way he could suddenly see in two days or so.

Have fun roleplaying with your advanced character! :)
