If you are worried about spoilers, you can safely read the first
3.
Well, there is a spoiler involving a certain character's
resurrection in the Epilogue of Book 3. It hasn't been revealed
in the show yet and probably won't be until Season 5...or maybe
tonight's episode.
I have a sense that tonight might show this resurrection only
because the last scene involving key participants seemed ages
ago. The knight and her squire leave the inn with a direwolf
shaped bread, and that's it for their Season 4? That would be
wack. I hope that is the very last scene tonight.

Haven't read any of them yet, though obviously I'm interested. I
saw that GRRM also wrote some prequel novellas called Tales of
Dunk and Egg. Anyone know them? Should I start there, or with
the main line books?

I've heard of them, but they're pretty much irrelevant as far as
the show's plot is concerned. My advice: read whatever you like.

I am halfway through the second book and still haven't gotten
any indication that Renly is gay although Martin said that he
made that clear in the novels. Foppish, yes. But, I haven't
seen anything that would explictly make him gay.
Really? I thought GRRM made it pretty clear when Catelyn met
Renly and his entourage for the first time. He never says it
outright, but most of his men make jokes that Renly's marriage
with Margary hasn't been consummated and probably never will be
due to his "preferences". He gives his wife every courtesy but
speaks to Loras all through dinner and is usually leaning
against him or in contact with him in some way.

I am going to have to reread that section. I got the "will
probably stay a maid" reference on the second go through.
Didn't catch the dinner part. I am going to have to take my
gaydar in for repair.

See if you can grab one for me while you're at the shop. I don't
think my gaydar has ever existed; it pretty much has to be in
writing. :P

I read all the books basically back to back about 3 years ago.
I started reading Game of Thrones and I couldn't put it down and
then read the rest straight after. The books are a great read
going into much more depth with characters and plots. I like
the tv series however they have left a great deal of the story
out but i understand that it would be extremely expensive and
perhaps a lot slower if they didn't.
I didn't like the shortening of the battles in the series as
they were much more complex especially the battle between the
wildlings and the nights watch, There's no way they could fit
that battle in one episode and the same for the battle of
blackwater.
I still enjo the series but when they change the story from the
book I am left thinking wtf?

I think the tendency for the TV series to change actors for
various roles in each season is just as annoying. I can't recall
any other show of comparable popularity where the person playing
a key character changes so often. Those who have read the books
know certain characters die or leave and show up a book later.
But how many people are they going to hire to play the Mountain?
Are we even certain the current guy will be there in the future
seasos? LOL! Regardless, I'll continue to watch because the show
runners do a great job taming GRRM's beast. This is just one of
my few criticisms of GoT.

I too have read the books; started them a long time ago and then
waited... and waited... ... and waited for each successive one
to come out. I'd taken to reading the sample chapters on GRRMs
not-a-blog just to give myself a fix, and I've done at couple of
read-throughs of each book. I probably need to give the Hedge
Knight a re-read too at some point.
On the plus side, the waiting had encouraged me to look for
other options*; quite enjoyed the First Law books by Joe
Abercrombie which temporarily slaked my thirst for flawed
characters and dark humor.
* Another option still under consideration is the installation
of a Moon Door into my balcony.

(Just got to the Red Wedding in the books. I knew it was coming,
but that doesn't make it any easier to read. I feel like my
brain can't even process what just happened.)
