SR + GTA
By: Matthias King Date: May 31, 2013, 6:59 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I think it would be cool if someone were to write a
'fan-fiction,' for lack of a better word, that takes the MC from
Saints Row, along with Gatt, Pierce, Shaundi, and Tobias/Laura
and charted a new narrative post-SR2, be it going after Dex or
something else, but completely disregarding Saints Row 3, and
intertwined the new narrative with GTA IV era characters.
The story could take place immediately after Saints Row 2's
entire story arc including 'Ultor Exposed' and 'Corporate
Warfare' DLC'.' Also the story of GTA IV, along with 'The Lost
and Damned' and 'Ballad of Gay Tony' would have been taking
place in Liberty City at the same time that SR2's story was
taking place in Stilwater.
The story taking place after those two games could pull the
Saints together with Niko (and possibly Roman, Little Jacob, and
Packie), Johnny Klebitz and what's left of The Lost MC, and Luis
Lopez (and possibly Gay Tony as well). I don't know for what
reason all those groups would be pulled together, but it would
have to be something pretty serious. They could start out as
adversaries, but would ultimately join forces, because can you
imagine how unstoppable the MC, Niko, Johnny, and Luis would be
together? And then when you add in Gatt, Shaundi, Pierce,
Little Jacob, and Packie? Epic. Donnie could even pop up
somewhere, because he always does.
Then you've got the MC's connections with Troy and Eric Gryphon,
and all the ways Ultor could tie into the story, presumably as
allies with Gryphon in charge, but who knows, and you have
Johnny Klebitz's connections to congressman Stubbs, and Luis's
connections to Yusuf Amir. All of which could provide possible
story and character avenues to go for.
And of course there's the tragically and bafflingly missed
opportunity of going after Dex. Maybe the story could start in
a similar way to SR3, but when it gets to the Syndicate it would
take a different route. The Syndicate would be a more serious
organization, and Dex would be one of the higher-ups, and
Killbane and Matt Miller would be completely excluded and
forgotten. The Saints coming up against them wouldn't be
sparked off the Saints robbing a bank that the Syndicate
inexplicably owns, but would evolve from a much more organic
route of the Saints going after Dex like they had intended to.
The Syndicate could actually be a multinational criminal
organization like it was supposed to be, instead of a half-assed
gang filled with emo kids and luchadores who can barely control
one small city. That's where the connection to GTA could come
in. The Syndicate owns Steelport and is trying to move in on
Stilwater and Liberty City and steps on a lot of toes along the
way, including Niko, Klebitz, and Luis.
The Saints start out going after Dex, but end up getting pulled
into a large-scale war against the Syndicate that spans at least
3 cities; Stilwater, Steelport, and Liberty City.
I know most everyone on here is a big fan of Saints Row (SR1 and
SR2) and GTA, so I thought a merging of those series without
messing with established canon (except for SR3 because who the
fuck cares) would be awesome.
I would attempt writing it myself, but I'm neck deep in trying
to write an original novel, but there are some solid ideas to
start with if anyone wanted to take a stab at it.

I like the idea, it would be a fun write, I do like writing for
multiple characters.
If I get time in the near future, I'll write up an intro, I'll
have to play the games again though. I've forgotten most of the
story behind the Saints Row Games.
I haven't played them in a long time.
This alos sounds like something OGluke, would do very well.

It does sound interesting but nothing i'd wanna work with.
I hated how syndicate were downplayed as villians in SR3. If
there such a multinational gang as there claimed why aren't the
Syndicate battling the Zyndicate(aliens) in SR4 instead of the
saints?
good luck with your novel matthias. Does it have to do with
mercenaries videogame?

Yeah, I'd have to play all those games again, but that would be
epic! Actually If RockStar and Violition would team up to make a
game like that, now that would be awesome! 8)

No, my novel is a completely original work. It has nothing to
do with any existing property.
I did like the Mercenaries 2 video game though.
And yea, I completely agree about the Syndicate Luke, which is
why I suggested reimagining them. I thought the idea had
potential, but that potential was immediately wasted as soon as
the game got started. To take the core idea and expand it to
make them a legitimate multinational syndicate instead of what
they actually ended up being in SR3 would be the only way I
could see any reason to use them in a story.
And, of course, as I said, lose Matt Miller/Deckers and
Killbane/Luchadores entirely. They were just too hokey and
ridiculous.
The Ronin and Samedi in SR2 pushed the boundaries a bit, but you
could still picture them in your mind as a Haitian drug cartel
and the Yakuza, respectively, because essentially that's what
they were. But the Deckers and the Luchadores were just dumb.
They had nothing even close to real-life analogs. They were
just a bunch of emo kids and a bunch of luchadores playing
gangster for some unknown reason.
For me, the only parts of SR3's story that are worth keeping and
restructuring into a new story would be the initial concept of
the Syndicate as a multinational criminal organization, and
Phillipe Loren as one of the upper echelon leadership. The
character of Loren, like the concept of the Syndicate, had
potential, but Volition wasted it again.
A case could be made for the DeWynter sisters, but having hot
twin girl executive assistants/bodyguards was a bit on the
cartoony side, so that's debatable. I personally didn't care
for Zimos and thought the autotune thing was about a year too
late, and Oleg and the entire 'Brutes' and clones thing
altogether was just too cartoony. Kinzie was ok, at best. And
Angel is better forgotten. Josh Birk/Nightblade was kind of
amusing, but only as background for the world, not as an actual
character. He had no place in the story really.
So to sum up, I could see Phillipe Loren and the Syndicate as
the main enemy force in the proposed new story, but not in the
form in which they appeared in SR3. They would need to be
worldwide and have more power and influence to threaten the
Saints and to bring the Saints and the GTA IV protagonists
together to oppose them, and the best way to bring the Syndicate
and the Saints/GTA IV Protags into conflict would be the Saints
going after Dex, and finding that since quitting Ultor and
fleeing Stilwater, he's partnered up with this ultra-powerful
organization calling themselves The Syndicate and has quickly
proven himself and risen pretty high up in their ranks. This
puts the Saints back on Dex's radar, and therefore, the
Syndicate's, and also gets them interested in tailoring their
U.S. expansion to include Stilwater, in addition to the other
cities they already conqured or had their eyes on going after
next, i.e. Steelport, Liberty City, and perhaps even Vice City.
I imagine the Syndicate as being widespread across Eastern and
Western Europe and a lot of the former Soviet Union, and now
looking to expand their influence to the U.S. They took over
Steelport first (presumably sometime between the timeline of SR1
and the end of SR2 and GTA IV) and set their sights on Liberty
City next, but the Saints coming after Dex brings Stilwater to
their attention. They see that the Saints are in firm control
of Stilwater, but they see opportunity in the fact that the MC
and his top lieutenants are distracted with going after Dex in
Steelport and their absense has left the Saints, and Stilwater
vulnerable. The Syndicate uses that to their advantage and
start to move in to Stilwater by force. This puts the war on
three fronts; Steelport, where the MC is going after Dex;
Stilwater, where the Saints (possibly with some help from the
Gryphon-led Ultor), are trying to hold the Syndicate at bay; and
Liberty City, where the Syndicate are running roughshod over
everyone.
In Liberty City, The Syndicate is making big power plays,
pressuring businesses and pissing off a lot of people. People
like Yusuf Amir and Gay Tony, which would bring Luis Lopez into
the mix. Perhaps coming into conflict with the Lost MC as
Johnny and what's left of the club are leaving town which could
result in a firefight and one or more of Johnny's Lost brothers
being killed, which brings him into the mix. And perhaps The
Syndicate steps on the toes of Roman's executive cabs or perhaps
something Packie is doing, which could bring Niko, Little Jacob,
and Packie into the fight. Liberty City is a big place, but not
big enough to keep the one-man-armies of Niko, Johnny, and Luis
from, sooner than later, crossing eachother's paths once again
in their individual campaigns against the Syndicate, and they
could decide to join forces. It would be an uneasy alliance at
first, of course, but they would come to appreciate eachother's
badassness.
The MC and Saints lieutenants would be doing their thing in
Steelport while the GTA IV protags are doing theirs in Liberty
City, but something could either pull the Saints to Liberty,
like perhaps Dex would feel like he couldn't hide in Steelport
any longer and had to regroup with the Syndicate in Liberty, or
perhaps something would pull both the MC and the protags to Vice
City where they would meet up, perhaps get into a firefight or a
brawl at first, but ultimately realize they shared a common
enemy.
I'm just spitballing, but there's massive potential here. If
anyone wanted to try outlining the story and start writing,
while I can't try to write it myself because of my novel, I'd be
glad to assist and advise wherever I can.
I think there are a ton of people who were extremely let down by
the direction SR3 took, and would love to read this if it were
done well.

You've put a great deal of thought into this already man.
Nope i didn't care at all for V's directive of the third and
four is just that of a clone in addition to superpowers and
aliens.

This sounds like a very deeply intertwined and hard to write
story. It's be a challenge. Maybe if you get stuck on your
novel, you could come here and write, until you get some more
ideas for your novel.

Yea, deep and intertwined is kinda my thing, and trust me, I
know it's challenging. My novel's scale and scope and number of
moving parts can attest to that. But, generally, that's my
favorite kind of story.
Small, simple stories can be great, but stories with depth, and
more than one side are exciting to me.
But if you think about it and break it down, the concept isn't
all that complicated. Here's a quick rundown of the players
involved:
The Saints:
MC
Johnny Gatt
Shaundi
Pierce
Tobias and Laura
Kinzie Kensington
Various Saints soldiers
Associates: Troy Bradshaw, Eric Gryphon+Ultor, Mr Wong, Legal
Lee, Will, Samson, Tera Patrick, Jane Valderama, Luz Avalos
(one, some, or all may or may not come into play, just depends
on how the story forms)
What do they want? To maintain their hard-won control over
Stilwater, and to get payback against Dex, not only for
betraying all of them, but for the attempted assassination of
MC.
The Syndicate:
Phillipe Loren
Dex
?? other senior leadership ??
Various Syndicate lieutenants and soldiers
Associates: ??
What do they want? To expand their power and influence into the
U.S. after capturing large portions of the market share of
various illegal trades in much of Eastern and Western Europe and
Eastern Block and former Soviet Union. To maintain control over
Steelport, and begin the takeover of Liberty City and Stilwater,
with Vice City next on their agenda.
Niko's Group:
Niko Bellic
Roman Bellic (This presupposes Niko took the 'Revenge' route)
Little Jacob
Packie McReary
Associates: Brucie Kibbutz, Dwayne Forge, Badman, UL Paper,
Johnny Klebitz
What do they want? Niko wants to be done with 'the life' and
leave it all behind; Roman wants to enjoy the American Dream and
be an entrepreneur now that he's married and he and Niko are
reasonably well-off; Packie would like to be able to settle
down, but due to losing his sister and being an adrenaline
junkie, he can't leave 'the life' behind; Little Jacob wants to
live a low-key life while maintaining his weed business.
Luis Lopez's Group:
Luis Lopez
Gay Tony
Yusuf Amir
Associates: Armando Torres, Henrique Bardas, Brucie Kibbutz,
What do they want? Gay Tony just wants to re-open his clubs and
get back on top of the club business in Liberty; Yusuf Amir
wants to keep flexing his financial might and seeking
entrepreneurial opportunities around Liberty that allow him to
flaunt his wealth, and of course hanging out with his favorite
person Luis; Luis Lopez mostly wants to be done with the
craziness of 'the life' but part of him likes the chaos, and he
would like to get back to work with Gay Tony taking his clubs to
the next level.
Johnny Klebitz's Group:
Johnny Klebitz
What do they want? Johnny Klebitz wants to leave 'the life' and
Liberty behind altogether and get back to what it means to be a
biker, presumably to ride across country heading west with no
particular destination
Associates: Terry Thorpe, Clay Simmons, Angus Martin
(collectively what's left of the Lost MC Alderney chapter),
Ashley Butler, Malc and DeSean of the Uptown Riders MC,
Congressman Thomas Stubbs, Niko Bellic
Ultor:
Eric Gryphon
Various Ultor execs, officers, and Masako team members.
What do they want? Under Eric Gryphon, Ultor now seeks a
peaceful coexistence with the Saints, and they want to maintain
and continue to expand their corporate powerbase in Stilwater
and beyond, and presumably continue their various avenues of
scientific research without further interference.
Associates: Troy Bradshaw, The Saints
Here's a quick rundown of the conflicts:
Stilwater: Saints+Ultor vs Syndicate for control of Stilwater
Steelport: MC & Saints vs Dex & Syndicate, at first simply for
revenge on Dex, but evolving into also wanting to take Steelport
from the Syndicate as payment for causing the Saints so much
trouble
Liberty City: Niko vs Syndicate for attempting to muscle Roman,
Packie, and Little Jacob out of their businesses
Johnny Klebitz vs Syndicate for interrupting
his leaving Liberty and killing Angus Martin and/or Terry Thorpe
Luis Lopez vs Syndicate for ruining Gay
Tony's comeback onto the nightclub scene by trying to steal
ownership of the clubs, and for forcibly pushing Yusuf out of
some lucrative land deals
Eventually turning into Niko+Johnny+Luis vs
Syndicate
Knowing the players, conflicts, and motivations is a big first
step. Then figuring out the who, what, when, where, and why of
the sequence of events that form the narrative comes next, but
it's a lot easier when you have that first part of the puzzle
out of the way. These are just the broad strokes, but it's a
place to start.

I imagine a SR reboot but not to the extension into GTA
territory.
I think something on the inside wants you to write this story
otherwise you wouldn't be saying as much.
