       I started like most, GTA3.
I heard of GTA before GTA3 came out (I assume it was GTA2) and
thought it would be awesome play that type of game. Then GTA3
came out and I had to get that.
GTA3 - awesome. I was hooked, never played a free roaming game
where you can just run around shooting up people and run from
       cops.
GTA: Vice city - They stepped it up. The main character can
actually talk! cool setting. Cheats were awesome. And to my
amazement you can actually pay to recruit people and they run
around with you at the end of the game. You have the Cubans and
Haitians hanging around in circles ready to fight. You can buy
       locations and collect money.
GTA: San Andreas - Pure awesome, they stepped it up even more.
90's gangsta free roam game. You can recruit more that 3 people
and you don't have to pay! Airplanes! You can customize stuff.
You've played it, you know how awesome it is. Cheats were
awesome and made the game last longer.
SR1 - I was skeptical at first cause of the cartoony look. But
eventually loved it and couldn't wait to see what they can do in
SR2. I never thought of it as a GTA clone.
GTA4 - loved the story, but lacked the fun and replay-ability
       like GTA: San Andreas.
SR2 - It was awesome, but was dissapointed again that you can
only recruit 3 members. But the game was great and loved the
story line and that fact you can choose your MC's voice.
SR3 - :-\ I don't know what happen here. Again only allowed to
recruit 3 members! (Sorry that is important to me)
Sorry, I know you only asked how I got in to free roaming games.

       ^Wow
I got started by watching a friend of mine playing the original
GTA. I liked it and got it for myself. Pertty much how it
       happened.

When I bought my first copy of GTA Vice City...I think. (I have
been playing GTA III (at my cousins place), but never had any of
those GTA's before I had Vice City)

When GTA3 was given to me on my 10th b-day. Then i always played
the games. Now that i played Saints row 1 on 360, it blew me
away. I always loved gangster games. SR2 on PS3 made me even
happier for the series. The third made me wanna kill my self
       tho.

I wanted a game where I could make my own character and run
around, doing wtf ever I wanted... thus I found Saints Row 2. XD
Oh wait, I think it may have been just cause 2, actually... oh
       well. :p

I played the early GTA games, on the original PS... the topd
down view drove me nuts, but what really got me was how awesome
the radio stations were (rockstar still does better in game
radio than anyone else by leaping bounds).
In the late 90's, they released a game for playstation called
Die Hard Trilogy... the game was kinda crappy, seperated into 3
games, each based on one of the die hard films of the original
trilogy. The Die Hard 3 game was all about driving in an open
city, and if you had a game shark then you could enter a free
roam, and drive around the city until you basically died... you
could even switch cars a couple of times... I remember playing
that and thinking, my god, this has so much bloody potential....
they should have made the whole game like this....
Then the original Driver Hit... holy fuck, it was like someone
was listening to my thoughts... I played that game until my
fingers bled and my eyelids were crusted open... The story mode
of the game was awesome, but the real fun was the mode where you
just run from the cops, and try to see how long you can
survive... the driving physics were tip top... at least in my
       memory...
Then PS2 came out, and with it, came GTA3... fuck me, it was the
video game I had been waiting my entire life for... I remember
playing it nonstop for 2 days straight, no sleep, the only
breaks were to piss, shit, and eat... The driving part wasn't
as good as driver, but you could get out of the car and shoot
motherfuckers, beat up old ladies, the cars... my god there were
       so many cars...
I didn't think it could get any better... Vice City was awesome,
but it was more of the same. Then San Andreas hit... oh my
god.... It was almost the perfect game... you could do anything
in it... I hated the main character though, CJ... he let
everyone talk shit to him, and I could never get that... But it
was ok, because the game gave me everything I thought I could
ever want. The best part was how huge the place was, how
utterly immense and diverse the landscape was. You could be
driving around in the city, then suddenly you are fucking
zooming through the desert... it was amazing...
After that I bought GTA liberty and vice city stories, but they
were just PSP ports, and couldn't stand up to SA... I prayed
they would release a San Andreas Stories... but alas it was not
       to be...
When GTA4 came out, I was floored by the graphics, the
pedestrian interaction... but it was missing so much... the
rampages, the car csutomization, the character customization,
the vehicle storage... While GTA4 had the absolute best
storyline of any video game I had ever played (only Snatcher and
Road Avenger come close), the replayability just wasn't there...
Thats when I discovered Saints Row 2... and fuck me... fuck
me... it wasn't as good overall as San Andreas, because it
lacked the map size and diversity, and the story was kind of
lame, and I hated the MC... but in every other way, it was the
best game I had ever played... the number of vehicles, the
character customization on every level, the vehicle
customization... the amount of vehicles you could store...
honestly I preferred the San Andreas method of storing vehicles,
because I could organize my rides by house, but holy fuck, you
could jsut store so many damn rides and they were so
customizable that it was forgivable... Plus there were elements
of Cyberpunk, with the nanotech and the Ultor bits... and on top
of all that, it was amazing to explore, to try and get the crap
mere mortals weren't meant to have, jessicas pheonix, carlos's
oppressor, the bro drug lab, the samedi limo... it was
       amazing....
Then the first trailer for SR3 hit, and I thought I was going to
die... even more cyberpunk elements, better graphics, and some
awesome awesomeness... As the release got closer it was a
rollercoaster of excitement and dissapointment... the genki, pro
rassler, zombie and dildo shit left me scratching my head, but
the decker and stag stuff had me nearly shitting my pants in
       excitement....
Then the game hit... and so did the dissapointment...
dissapointment because while the game devlivered all that
awesome stuff... the reality was that no one expected that we
wouldn't be getting SR2 but better, instead they removed so
much, that in the end its as big of a let down as GTA4...
because it could have been so much more...
So now I am looking for a new sandbox game, to tide me over till
GTA5.... or maybe SR4... though I am never going to buy either
title at launch again... and definitely never preordering
       anything ever again.
