How did you guys get involved with Free-Roam games?

Pretty much the topic title.
When i was ten, my uncle had GTA3, and i had heard about the
game but i had thought it was a whole game about trying to rob a
car dealership of exotic cars. Boy was i wrong, i had fell in
love with the Game, so then after that, a couple months later, i
went to my grandmas, and my other uncle (who was 14 at the time)
had GTA SA. Then i HAD to play all the GTA's, so i did, i beat
all of them and i had nothing else todo untill GTA 4 was
released. Then, i found out about SR, loved it, and played SR2
and GTA4 when they were released and loved them all.

The first ever GTA (old school stylee) can't beat the classics
but GTA3 was mind blowing! my first words when seeing that game
was- 'GTA in 3D Fuck ya!'
Then many years later I was introduced to Saint's Row (which
stole my heart )
But now seeing what a crock of shit SRTT turned out to be, I may
go back to Rockstar for my Free Roaming needs.

GTA2. I played that a helluva lot. I read about GTAIII all the
time before its release in disbelief that a game like that could
be made. Eventually got it and loved it.

I remember my sisters boyfriend letting me borrow one of the
first GTA's for the PS1, I actually couldnt stand playing it, it
was too crazy and hectic for me, and the top down style made it
really hard to play. Then I remember spending the night over my
friends house when GTA3 came out, and all we did was take turns
running around the city and killing people lol, which I sure
everyone who had the game did that!!! I at some times I would
just drive around and listen to all the radio stations, like
that Chatterbox talk show.
Then my friend introduced me to saints row, which really got me
interested is when he told me that you could make your own gang
in Multiplayer, I HAD TO GET IT!!!! Now come to think of it, I
really miss the "gang" aspect and gang war feel to saints row. I
thought thats when SR was about. And I also noticed GTA has more
interesting commercials and radio hosts on their game, and in SR
only Veteran child was the only radio host which I would want
to listen too!

I got started with GTA III as well. I had never heard of GTA at
that point, but a few of my friends picked up GTA III when it
came out and told me I HAD to get over there and play it, so I
did. We would spend hours and hours on end taking turns from
the safehouse in the middle of Staunton Island, doing the
weapons cheat until we had a ton of weapons then just running up
that ramp into the street, wreaking havoc and seeing how long we
can survive, then passing the controller when we died.
So I bought it and played through it a lot, and after that,
naturally I went on to get Vice City and San Andreas when they
came out, as well as Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories,
and played all those a ton as well. Then in 2006, one of the
guys at the Gamestop I regularly go to told me about a game
coming out in a few months called Saints Row. I ended up buying
that day one along with an XBOX 360 console and was blown away.
I was already a decidedly sandbox game guy at that point, but
Saints Row just seemed to take it to a new level for me. Then
the same guy told me to be on the lookout for Crackdown, which
became another all-time favorite of mine, and he also turned me
onto Mercenaries 2 and Prototype, as well as inFAMOUS, which
incidentally sold me on a PS3. Then of course GTA IV came out,
which was somehow simultaneously both amazing and incredibly
underwhelming. Then Saints Row 2 came out and was the best
sandbox yet in my opinion. And of course Red Faction:
Guerrilla, Red Dead Redemption, Crackdown 2 and inFAMOUS 2 came
out which I enjoyed a lot. I think the only sandbox game I
never checked out was Just Cause 2. Then, as we all know, SR3
came out a couple weeks ago.
Anyway, that's my personal journey through sandbox games
starting with GTA III and leading up to SR3. I have a few
non-sandbox games, but generally I'm an almost exclusively
sandbox game player. I recently got into the Mass Effect series
which has shot like a bullet straight into my top 5 favorite
game series of all time. I suppose that, in a way, it could
almost be considered a sandbox game with how you can go anywhere
in the galaxy essentially anytime you want and, for the most
part, you can determine your own path through the story.

My first free roam (not sandbox) was Jak and Daxter: The
Precursor Legacy. Like I said, it wasn't a sandbox, but a hub
based free roam, and the first three games are still some of my
favorites to this day. Then somewhere between Jak 1 and Jak 2,
I saw Morrowind at the store and decided to try it, and fell
completely in love with the freedom it offered, so when a friend
of mine let me try GTA: SA I fell in love with that and ended up
buying it from the friend. Still got it too. The rest is pretty
much history. I've lost many [s]hours[/s] days of my life to
sandbox games. Saints Row being the biggest time eater.

I think GTA Vice City got me into free roam games. SA kept me
there.
