Starting a garden from scratch
By: walkerhuntfish Date: February 17, 2015, 5:03 pm

I've got me a small patch picked out for where I'd like to try
the gardening thing. It's way early but I'd like to hear some
ideas on how to start. I figured since grass is dormant right
now I'll get as much of it as possible out the way. But should I
start putting some sort of nutrients in now or wait till got
plants in ground? Maybe this will help most of you get your
minds off all the snow and frozen crap y'all been dealing with.

Aint a gardener but been working on a farm since I could walk.
That sods good for your dirt-- organic matter. If you plow it
down or roto-till it or whatever you're gonna do to tear it up
now it'll give it a chance to bust-up, decompose before you work
it.

Here where we have this red assed clay they like to plow prior
to freeze up so it will freeze and bust up that hard crap. If
you make sure and plow it when conditions are correct (dry
enough) it won't clod up. I suspect your soil is loamy enough
there isn't an issue. But if you have a bunch of organic matter
the sooner you can get it turned under and get it decomposing
the better off you will be.
If you burn wood, ashes from a wood stove is also good material
to spread out on a garden. Many mistakes people make is pour the
nitrogen to a garden and forget all the other elements needed.
Nitrogen is key but without the other elements plants cant
uptake it effectively and many times nitrogen will accelerate in
the depletion of these other elements also.
