       August 9, Rain or Shine

Didn't think they'd do much with the little rain we had. AA
battery beside it. I didn't get tomato, but I got turnip. Btw,
they are sweet, tender and delicious.

       Good deal Dean. :tip:
How do you prepare them for the table?
Fixed a mess at the camp last week. I sliced them thin, sauteed
them in butter until lightly brown, added water and simmered
covered until tender, added a tablespoon of peach preserves and
cooked uncovered until the pan broth is reduced to a thin syrup,
stirring to prevent the sugars from burning.

Whew! Just finished digging the remaining potatoes from the
garden, about a 1/3rd of what I planted. Ended up digging by
Night Razr. lol. 20 gallons of red potatoes and 5 of sweet
potatoes, plus a feedsack of turnips. That's it for the garden
2014. Down to the low 20's tomorrow. I guess when push comes to
shove, I've become more farmer than hunter. I had the choice of
going coon hunting tonight or digging taters. :-\ Oh, well, the
       coon can wait. Taters couldn't.
Bayne, that sounds good. Indeed, very good. I like mine raw, for
the most part, but I like also to slice them thick, boil them
for 5 minutes, drain them, dry them and fry them brown in
butter. Also like them in salads, and also like them boiled half
as long as potatoes (10 minutes) and then mashed 50/50 with
potatoes. Turnips are good and very low on the glycemic index.
Very compatible with mashed potatoes to reduce the starch, if
any of that matters to you. It's why we raise red waxy potatoes,
though last year I snuck in a row of Yukon Gold.

Ain't got nothing to worry with but turnips and greens.
Gathered about a 5 gal bucket of okra pods to save for seeds so
I'm done. I ain't no winter gardener. RAZ
