       Tomatoes
By: Dean Torges Date: September 1, 2014, 3:35 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
We've put up over 60 qts so far. Will do this batch, and then
switch over to tomato juice for the balance of the crop. Mary
found a tomato juice recipe from a dear old friend who's gone
now. We loved the juice. It was kinda sorta like V8, only
       better. Will make a bunch.
The striped variety of tomato came from the wife of a grade
school and high school buddy of mine who lives nearby. She's
from KY and the seed has been in her family that she knows of
for 150 years. She calls it Stripes or sometimes Mr. Stripe. I
like it about as much as the A&H's. It's prolific with large
globe fruit, a tender skin, very meaty, low in acid, and firm of
flesh (never gets mealy). Shows a little blight resistance as
       well.

Yes, they are as good as a tomato gets. Here are the Stripes. If
I could only plant two, it would be Stripes and A&H's.

Are 'maters a little late due to rain cold in the early spring
this year? I am seeing people with buckets full beside the road
now with free signs? Something you usually see in August.
Guessing things didn't do well and they were holding back. Those
are pretty nice 'mater iffen you like them.
Funny thing is I hate them but will eat them fried green and
love 'mater juice. I know :fan:
