[/quote] Heirloom vs Hybrid - The Heirloom is a mater that has
been handed down from one generation to another and you can save
seed from it year after year and will grow true to form time
after time. There are seed magazines that specialize in Heirloom
seeds. The Hybrid on the other hand is a mater that has been
mixed of two or more different maters of different species to
make one. Even though you can save seed and plant next year it's
anyones guess as what ya will get. The Heirloom is desired by
most people IMO. Hope this answered your question. Where is the
wordsmith when ya need him?

Well, that's a good answer. The only thing I would add is that
the hybrids exist for several reasons. One is that they are more
vigorous in production, and thus they have commercial
advantages. Less vine, more tomato, more easily grown and
picked. And another reason is that they've been bred for disease
resistance, something the heirlooms are susceptible to, such as
leaf mosaic, fungus of various sorts, etc. Their disadvantage is
that you don't gain something without giving up something. THe
Law of Compensation. Hybrids give up on taste considerably. None
that I know of come close to the better heirlooms. In short,
it's the economics engine at work. Same reason we don't have
fields of open pollinated corn. Good for you, higher protein,
more complex, but much lower in commercial yield.

I'm ol skool as they come but I pretty much prefer hybrids in
MOST garden vegetables especially tomatoes. However I can't get
       away from Longhorn okra. RAZ

Dean spelled it out pretty clear. If a farmer - making his
living off what he grows- be it truck farming, or grain or
livestock farming he would go broke QUICK with heirloom type
seed. I believe there is a lot to be said for them for personal
gardening use though. Without hybrids and as bad as I hate to
say it- genetically engineered seeds it would be REAL HARD to
survive in commercial agriculture, just a fact, not saying I
       like it.

Good answers , i have good luck with heirlooms. Always try
something new. This year , oxhearts and i always like Cherokee
purple. I plant in beds and dont have a problem with blight or
       disease or bugs

you can have a good crop with heirloom tomato but it's more work
not to many short cuts but the taste is worth the trouble first
build good cages that will keep them off the ground and spray
them for the blight once a week I am the laziest white in ky and
       a can raise a few :icon_smoke: :icon_smoke:

I refuse to eat store bought tomatoes. Only started eating yard
grown in last few years. Just didn't like them since I was a
kid. I really enjoy them now. I had a beefsteak? one time that I
thought was the best thing ever. Gonna check into some different
ones that can handle heat down here and give them a try next
       spring. Thanks guys.
