growing tomatos in 5 gallon buckets
By: Wrights mountain curs Date: August 7, 2014, 7:48 pm

I tried something new this year and planted some Pink Brandywine
Tomato's in these food grade 5 gallon Buckets, They seem to be
doing pretty good and are more than twice the size as when this
picture was taken. I know that I should have planted a
determinate or bush variety tomato not a indeterminate like
Brandywine since they grow pretty tall but they are my favorite.
Anyone else ever try this ?

Did you use potting soil? I would like to try this next year.

I cleaned the barn 3 years ago and made a bed for tamaters. Only
way to go imo. Very little work after you get it established .
More maters , less pests and weeds and NO tilling.also can water
real easy if i need too

I used a potting mix because I had a bag of it already but you
could use regular potting soil too. I have been hearing for
years about people growing tomato's this way saying they do
better than the traditional method and that they even have more
tomato's this way so I just thought I would give it a try and
see what happens. I got the buckets cheap from a local
restaurant and drilled holes in them for drainage filled the
buckets about three quarters up and planted my tomato's one per
bucket and the cages fit right in the buckets , nothing to it.
You can always ad more soil if needed. I guess I will find out
       soon how it works. Roger

I have never tried it can see maybe it working on smaller types
of plants   but not too sure on heirloom
types that can get 6 foot tall

Yeah, You are right for sure, Like I said a determinate or bush
variety would have been a better choice but they just don't
taste near as good as a big old Brandywine lol.

I was rabbit hunting one time years ago down on a reclaimed
surface mining site and counted about 50 buckets or more filled
with nice soil but don't think they had been used for growing
       maters.
