Hey, let's jam.
One of the most prominent examples of xenochrony can be found on
Zappa's rock opera Joe's Garage

(1979), on which the
guitar solos are all xenochronous (with the exceptions of
"Watermelon In Easter Hay" and "Crew Slut").
In the words of Zappa himself:
<blockquote> A classic "Xenochrony" piece would be "Rubber
Shirt", which is a song on the Sheik Yerbouti

album. It takes a
drum set part that was added to a song at one tempo. The drummer
was instructed to play along with this one particular thing in a
certain time signature, eleven-four, and that drum set part was
extracted like a little piece of DNA from that master tape and
put over here into this little cubicle. And then the bass part,
which was designed to play along with another song at another
speed, another rate in another time signature, four-four, that
was removed from that master tape and put over here, and then
the two were sandwiched together. And so the musical result is
the result of two musicians, who were never in the same room at
the same time, playing at two different rates in two different
moods for two different purposes, when blended together,
yielding a third result which is musical and synchronizes in a
strange way. That's Xenochrony. And I've done that on a number
of tracks.</blockquote>

Nah, just fun things for the musically-curious. At the same
time, I get it, "let's jam".
Guessing it would be tough to pull off live.
Excellent examples of really cool interplay, improvisation. . .
"jamming" as folks like to term it, can be found on the "Shut Up
'n Play Yer Guitar" album set (1981) and another one released in
1988, "Guitar".
Where's 1? A question that BlackSox and I have asked more than
once.

I was reading the Rolling Stone issue on 100 greatest guitarists
(not that I agree with them). I did read the bit that Trey
Anastasio wrote for FZ. He mentioned "Shut Up 'n Play Yer
Guitar" as a big inspiration to him. Always enjoy FZ when I hear
him, I need to check that one out.

Lists like that are lightning rods, to be taken with a huge
grain of proverbial salt. But overall, I think they got the
top ones right. I was particularly pleased that Johnny Ramone
made the top 30.
But to rank "The Edge" above Bloomfield, Garcia, Muddy Waters,
Otis Rush, Albert Collins, Joe Walsh, etc.? Blasphemy! He's
Peter Buck with a heavy reliance on effect pedals.

Heh. More importantly, where's the "and" between 1 and 2?
Guess all that is immaterial with that Xenochrony stuff.

He is busy fighting the Bruce Weber battle on the Illini Rivals
board.
Mrs MSF and I went to a Springsteen concert ONLY as a favor to a
friend of ours (he goes to our favs, so what the hell). I was
curious, always wanted to know what everyone saw in that band.
About halfway thru, Mrs MSF asks, when do we hear some guitars.
Course about that time, Bruce screams, "let her rip Stevie" and
the Sopranos guy does about a 5 second "jam" and the crowd goes
nuts. I looked at her and we just laughed.
Bruce is not much better, but if Keith Richards was #5 on the
list, they must give a lot of credit on the rythem from songs
like Satisfaction and Jumping Jack Flash. The best guitar player
in Springsteens band is the small little dude who used to have
some solo work before he joined the band, and he is nothing
special either.
Some people like dance music I guess.
