What does "good stick" or "active stick" mean?
I agree with BlackSox on sport with worst announcers. Although
their challenge is kind of the opposite of the hockey guys. They
have TONS of "dead" time to fill, which can be quite a challenge
in and of itself. I suppose football has a fair amount of that
as well, but constant replays help them a bit.

To fill dead space, you can always cut to sideline reporters who
tell you the same information that can be gleaned from the
booth.... only they're in a different physical location!!!
"Good stick" generally implies that your stick position
(typically in a defensive setting) is such that you can make a
defensive play on a player (stick check, block a pass, etc), or
such that you steer a player a particular direction (you're
generally going to be more inclined to carry the puck AWAY from
       a defender's stick).
An "active stick" generally implies that you're moving your
stick around (also in a defensive setting) so that you make the
area of ice you take up larger than if you were holding it
still... or that you're constantly adjusting your stick position
to put yourself in a better position to defend, per the "good
stick" technique described above. This is usually used to
describe how a penalty killer is defending.
"Active stick" is a pretty common phrase, but "good stick" is
far less common. I've never heard anyone else use these phrases
nearly as much as Olczyk uses them.

Pierre McGuire (the creepiest man in hockey; bar none)
The guys on the local sports yakker call him "the p e n i s
       with glasses".

While I don't care for Emrick's commentary, his p-b-p keeps up
pretty well with the pace of the game, in spite of, as Joe
pointed out, that many of his phrases have become ridiculously
cliché. I like Eddie's insight though, he's got a bit of Hawks'
       bias but it's not over-the-top.
And Pierre McGuire might as well be speaking into a cardboard
paper towel roll for all I care, he brings nothing to the
broadcast. Unless you're interested in Saskatchewan dairy
       farming.

       Some wonderful Pierre McGuire moments:

Note how awkwardly close he is standing to the other pundit.

I like how sometimes "Edzo" will just ignore Pierre McGuire
       sometimes.... classic.
       Oh, and by the way...
       I can't stand... Foley
       blasphemer!

Not much going on for Chicago sports tonight, so what an ideal
time for the National Spelling Bee. It's quite compelling! Nice
       to see smart kids.

What does "good stick" or "active stick" mean?
Ohhh, I get it. Those terms refer to hockey. I was thinking of
       something else...

Gotta give you kudos on that one, pretty good.
