Most Unimproved American League Teams

It was no secret last summer that White Sox GM Kenny Williams
couldn't wait to blow his under-performing roster to
smithereens.
But when he finally got his chance this winter, his peers in the
industry had a tough time figuring out what his blueprint was.
It was one thing to ship out Carlos Quentin and Jason Frasor.
But hiring a manager (Robin Ventura) who not only has never
managed a game,
but who has basically been away from the sport for most of the
past eight years? A head-scratcher.
And dealing an effective, low-budget closer (Sergio Santos) for
what most clubs regard as a second-tier prospect (RHP Nestor
Molina)? Another puzzler.
Here's just a sampling of the comments we got on this team's
offseason: "They dumped without getting much in return. A mess."
…
"I don't know what they're doing. If they were trying to dump
money, why'd they trade Santos? I just don't get it." …
"Did they add a new bat boy or hot dog vendor so that they can
at least make it seem that they are moving forward?"
Get the picture? Youch!

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Dressed in a black long-sleeve shirt and
jeans, the new manager of the Chicago White Sox sat atop a
picnic table and held his first media session of spring training
outdoors.
He didn’t curse, rant, make headlines or bold predictions.
This was Robin Ventura, about as far as one can get from Ozzie
Guillen.
On Wednesday in Glendale, Ariz., Ventura and the White Sox began
a new era, opening camp for the first time since 2004 without
the sometimes-irascible, sometimes-lovable Guillen, who took his
act to the Miami Marlins.

Robin Ventura leads with his heart.
That's why he was flying into home plate on that awful night in
Sarasota, Fla., 15 years ago. It's why he pushed himself beyond
exhaustion in his recovery from an ankle damaged so bad it would
ultimately require a rare transplant, and why he was so crushed
when the White Sox traded away three of their best pitchers at
the trade deadline that year, only a week after he had gotten
back on the field.
"I never knew the season ended on July 31," said Ventura, who
wanted a chance to run down the Indians in the last two months
of that disappointing 1997 season.
Ventura hated leaving the Sox after 1998, but led with his heart
when he signed on to play with the Mets. That's why he quickly
became a leader of a team that included Mike Piazza, John
Olerud, Rickey Henderson, Orel Hershiser and Al Leiter, and why
he was so elated when he delivered a game-winning blast against
the Braves in the 1999 NLCS — a signature moment of a 16-year
career.

Just to clarify - this is ONLY for Saturdays.
The piece on Southsidesox makes it sound like it's EVERY
night.... not every Saturday night.
