Arcs and Back Stories
By: Karahl Date: February 5, 2014, 10:16 pm

Hi guys!
So lately I have seen the forum just buzzing with people
incorporating their ideas for arcs and backstories - and this is
fantastic! I am just so happy to see that so many people find
this forum a fun and exciting place to actively be in (and I bet
Sonic is especially happy since he started this in the first
place!). :D
Having said that, I have noticed that there have been multiple
members on the forum just itching to get their Arcs out with
villains to fight, mysteries to solve and backstories to unfold
- this is still great! But please remember that there is an
Arc's List on the forum:
HTML http://sonicspotlightrp.createaforum.com/arcs-adventures/arcs%27-list/
What is the Arc List?
The arc list is a waiting line for people who want to create
arcs and events for other characters to participate in. The
reason behind a waiting list is because Mobotropolis and
Everywhere Else threads are what we call a Canon Story line.
This means that one event happens at a time and everyone must
wait their turn to be an Arc Host.
Why do arcs/stories/events/back stories happen at one at a time?
Why not all at once?
[li]Time paradox. One of the rules on the forum is that your
character cannot be in multiple places at once at any given
time. (Unless threads are set before or after certain events.)
Please note that such events cannot be too far into the future
as this; if at all possible try to avoid set in the future posts
as no one will know 100% for sure how much a character or place
changes in between.[/li]
[li]Please note that the rule above does not apply to the "What
If?" section. Your character can be in as many different threads
as you like at one time simply because it does not affect the
Canon Story line.[/li]
[li]To avoid confusion. With so many people on the forum and
everyone bringing in new things, it'll cause confusion as to
"This relates to the Arc, how?". Trust me from experience, if
too many new elements are brought in, and aren't related to each
other things can get mixed up and messy very quickly.[/li]
[li]Common courtesy. Let's face it, everyone wants a moment to
shine for not only their writing and characters; but it's also
very exciting to see how other people will react to your ideas
and situations you give them. It is considered to be
inconsiderate to create an entirely new arc while there is still
one going on at the moment.[/li]
How do I know who's arc is happening when?
Click on the link above and it will take you to the Arcs' List.
Next to the name of the user it will say ACTIVE.
What is "Down Time"?
Chances are, someone's arc is almost always going to end up
somewhat traumatic for some characters and possibly quite a bit
of character development has happened. Down time is a chance for
everyone to recuperate and do freestyle RP to relax, maybe have
fun before our characters face the next dramatic event.
How do I get on the list?
Ask Sonic or Karahl in any way you can on the forum and either
one of us will add you to the list. The list has unlimited slots
and it's a first-come-first-serve sort of deal.
I have a villain I really want to try out. Can I introduce
him/her? Can I start planning?
By all means yes! Please go ahead and introduce your villains,
maybe even have them fit into society and everyone else winds up
unsuspecting! Feel free to plan ahead too! But until it is your
turn you cannot do anything major while there is another arc
going on.
What is considered major?
Anything big or significant, such as character go missing,
characters dying, masses threatened, world domination, an
ominous/evil/mysterious force or figure is coming to reek havoc,
going to an entirely new land and have expositions explaining
everything etc etc. Reason being that introducing too many new
elements will get confusing for those who are not aware of what
will happen in the current arc.
I have some deep back story or place of origin about my
character that I would like to introduce, when can I do that?
That really depends on the circumstances, in most cases this can
happen at any time. However, it is a good idea to ask the
current Arc Host if it is okay to let out all this exposition
about your characters if it is going to happen in the middle of
an arc; simply because it might hold the possibility of
derailing the arc or cause confusion as to what is related to
what. Personally, I say to save it for threads which are not
considered other people's arc threads, your own arc or during
"Down Time". :) Heck maybe even experiment with it in What If!
If you have any further inquiries, please send a message to
either Sonic or Karahl.
Kind Regards,
Karhal
