O'Hedge Family Christmas in Mercia [Amy & Sonya Only]

Amy looked out of the plane window at the beautiful land of the
kingdom of Mercia. A home away from home. She did her best to
repress her excitement at seeing her cousin and his family
again. It had been so long since last time. But she had managed
to get a few weeks off of work for the holidays and was going
to spend Christmas with her family. Sonya, her dearest friend,
had also been invited and Amy was very happy to have someone to
share this with her. At last, she could breathe easier now,
there was no drama in Mercia, no Scourge out to kill her, no
Sonic to make her sad and confused, and no Shadow to make her
even more confused. It was just going to be her and Sonya. No
boys allowed.
Once they landed and stepped out with their luggage, it was like
being in a whole other world. Despite the modern airport, the
adjoining parts of the kingdom were still in their medieval
design, most of the garbs people wore here felt like a
Renascence fair but Amy still loved it. She felt so comfortable.
A sudden blare of trumpets startled her out of her bliss and she
stared at the red carpet being rolled in front of her and Sonya
as an entourage stood before them, lining the red carpet that
led to a carriage. A well-dressed echidna man in a butler's
uniform with the O'Hedge crest on the breast pocket stood before
her and bowed deeply as he announced himself rather loudly.
“Lady Amelia Rose, Duchess of Mercia! I have been given the
highest honour in escorting your highness and your companion,
Lady Heart to the grand castle of Mercia.”
“Oh! Uh...” Amy was a bit dumbfounded at the royal treatment.
“I-I thank you, kind sir, but I was under the impression that my
cousin was to meet me.”
The man sputtered in disbelief before composing himself and he
shook his head. “Begging all pardons, milady. But the royal
family do not just commonly visit such public settings. The King
and Queen will be awaiting your arrival at the castle. Now then,
we must hasten if we are to be punctual.” he clapped his hands
and two page boys rushed forward and took their bags from the
hedgehog woman and vixen lady. He bowed again and then clicked
his heels as he turned and walked briskly down the red carpet
and opened the door to the carriage.
'Right, of course. How silly of me.' She thought to herself and
then glanced at her friend, giving a shrug as she followed their
escort. “Well, at least we save money from buying a cab.” she
said, offering an embarrassed smile as she stepped up into the
carriage.

The sudden sound of the trumpets causing her to jolt
uncomfortably by her friends side Sonya took a few moments to
internally console herself at least until her heart rate slowed
back into a pattern that wasn’t a cause for concern.
Casting a wearily observant eye over the old fashionably dressed
Echidna she large fluffy ears pinned backwards slightly, when he
spoke in what felt like an overwhelmingly booming tone, but
maybe she was just experiencing a serious case of jet lag so in
hindsight everything was going to temporarily be overbearing at
least for the time being. A faint smile tugging at the corners
of her lips, while he continued she barely managed to mask her
surprise when assistance hurried forward to take their
luggage.“Oh you don’t have to-“ The words had
barely left her lips before her suitcase had been whisked off.
Glancing back at her friend Sonya mirrored her shrug, before she
trailed after her still not entirely certain that what was
happening was real. Sliding into the seat beside her she waited
until the carriage door was closed with a quick click! Before
she scooted a little closer to the pink hedgehog, to rest her
head on her shoulder to murmur. “We’ve walked down a
red carpet at the airport, and now we’re being taken to a
[b]CASTLE in a bonified horse and carriage, pinch me!”[/b]

And Amy did, she reached over and gave her best friend a light
pinch on the arm, if reprimanded, she would retort with a 'You
just told me to.' She shifted a little on her seat. "Yeah... did
I ever mention the fact that my cousin is king of a small
country?" She said, feeling as awkward as this situation was.
She was hoping that the carriage ride wasn't going to be super
long but she did like the scenic route that they were taking.
She looked out at all the little shops and old fashioned homes.
"I will admit that I'm kind of excited to see this place again.
This kingdom has been through so much, and I'm so happy to see
it finally at peace again." Whenever Amy tried to remember her
childhood, it was almost like a blocked memory, the trauma of
losing her parents repressed those fond memories of this place.

Shooting the pink furred one a playful grin in response to her
‘You just told me to.’ She gave a small shake of her
head the wit in her tone radiating. "No. no I don’t think
you did although now I’m beginning to see why. I have a
feeling that when we get there we’re going to be in for
even grander welcoming than the one at the airport so you better
mentally prepare.” Subtly picking up that her friend was
feeling slightly uncomfortable with the situation she let her
spend a few moments surveying the tranquil scene that passed
them by her large ears twitching at her words. Giving a
understanding nod the fennec mutely reached out to give Amys
hand a gentle but comforting squeeze. She didn’t exactly
know all the details but she did know about her close friends
childhood in parts and how the tragedy of loosing her parents at
a young age had affected her. That she could sympathise with all
to well. [b]“Well I’m excited you brought me along
for the ride! it’s going to too be great Amy. If your
extended family are anything like you then there’s no
doubt this mini break will be a breeze. Rose and Heart embracing
the temporary luxuries that royalty has to offer. Has a nice
ring to it don't you think?" Flashing a quick wink to let her
friend know she was obviously half joking Sonya settled
contently back in her seat.

Amy didn't really know what to think of her noble status. Sure
it had more or less always been there but her life hadn't
exactly been influenced by royalty or the O'Hedge legacy. Well,
that was all in the past, with Robotnik no more and the Infinite
War over, she now could enjoy some quality time with her family
and perhaps partake in the life of a royal for a spell. "I
suppose it does." She said, beaming at her friend and then
looked out at the beautiful snowy forests.
"Excuse me, what is your name?" she asked the echidna male who
was their escort. The male blushed in slight embarrassment at
the social faux pas and introduced himself.
"Forgive me for my rudeness. I am Archibald Tingle, at your
service." He said with a bow of the head.
After about ten minutes of riding, she poked her friend. "Oh
Sonya, look!" she said, pointing out the window. "You can see
the castle!"
Indeed it was a sight to behold, sturdy stone walls, towering
spires, and narrow windows of stain glass, the castle stood
proud on its position on the hill, surrounded by mighty trees
that were taller than the castle itself. "Oh, they've decorated
for Christmas! How beautiful," she said as the carriage crossed
the drawbridge and entered the stone court where the castle
staff stood in a line to welcome them with the head of protocol,
as informed by the escort, Mr Charleston.
"Allow me, miladies." Tingle said, as he rose and opened the
door then extended his hand to Sonya help her out.

“Archibald Tingle now that’s a mouthful do you mind
if we shorten it to Archie?” The fennec quipped
half-jokingly from her seat in the back. Her attention soon
grabbed by her gently poking her in the side her gaze followed
the direction that she pointed outright pleasant shock painting
her dainty features at what she saw. "You can see the castle!"
Oh she could see castle alright! It looked like it had been
plucked from a fairy tale! complete with the expensive looking
stain glass the large building gave off some seriously admirable
rustic vibes. Sonya was looking forward to getting a tour when
or if they were offered one that was sure. “If it looks
this gorgeous on the outside I can’t wait to see what
it’ll look like inside! Your family sure go all out for
the holidays!” Feeling the carriage come to slow the shy
fennec snuck a brief peak out of the carriage window catching a
glimpse of the many royal servants that stood waiting to greet
them. Feeling her stomach lightly churn Sonya hesitated for only
a second before she mumbled a polite. “Thank you Mr
Tingle.” Using the hand that he offered to gently help
herself out. She managed only a few small steps, before she felt
herself freeze up.

Amy was also helped out of the carriage and said her thanks to
Mister Tingle when she noticed that Sonya had stopped advancing.
Placing a hand on her shoulder she whispered to her. "Hey, you
okay?" she asked, looked at the reception and smiled a bit shyly
at them. The head of protocol approached and gave a nod of the
head. "Welcome to Castle Hedge, my lady duchess and honored
guest." the woman was a gaunt, dour old shrew with a pinched
wrinkled face and a rather stony gaze as she inspected the
arrivals. "I am Madam Minchin, the Head of Protocol to the royal
family." She looked at her watch and then back at them, giving a
somewhat stiff smile. "You're right on time. This way please,
the royal family are waiting," she said, turning on her heels
and marched off with the enthusiasm of a soldier.
Amy slipped her hand into Sonya's to give her a bit of
confidence as she sensed that the fox girl might be intimidated
by the whole affair and gave her an encouraging smile. "Rob is
going to like you, as is Mari-An. I'm so excited to see them
again."

Trying to gather her wits about her Sonyas ear fluffy ear
flopped back and forth in response to her friends whisper. "Hey,
you okay?" Much as she wanted to give the pink one a verbal
answer instead she could only manage a small nod of her head
before their newest company arrived. Fixing a polite timid smile
across her lips through the shrews welcoming speech. If not for
Amy knotting their fingers together she probably would have
remained rooted to where she stood. Giving her best friends hand
a grateful squeeze she managed to fall into step beside her and
find her voice. “I-I really hope so! I’m sorry I
totally spaced out I guess I am more nervous than I
realised.” Anxiously rubbing the back of her head with the
hand that wasn’t holding Amys she returned her encouraging
smile with a warm one of her own. “I’m sure
I’m going to like your family just as much.”

As the two friends were escorted inside, and into what could
only be the throne room. Amy's ears perked up and she let go of
Sonya's hand then quickened her pace to the throne room. “Rob!”
she said happily as the teal hedgehog smiled at her and
descended down the stairs the dais to embrace her.
“Dear cousin! Tis good to see you again! Thy journey fared you
well I hope.” he took a step back and looked over his cousin.
“Your beauty increases with every visit, me thinks.” he said
with a slight teasing tone and Amy playfully smacked his arm.
“You're such a flatterer, cousin.” she winked and then gestured
to her friend. “Rob, I'd like you to meet a dear friend of mine,
Sonya Heart, the one I wrote about in my letters to you.”
The king of Mercia turned his attention to the fennec vixen and
graciously took her by the hand and bowed till his forehead
almost touched her knuckles. “Ah yes, the gentle healer, Lady
Sonya Heart. Tis an honor indeed to meet any friend of my dear
cousin. A pleasure indeed.” He rose from his posture and then
extended a hand back towards the regal female echidna standing
by her throne, wearing a golden dress fit for only royalty. The
queen of Mercia gracefully glided down the steps and took her
husband's hand, exchanging a loving smile with him before
turning her gaze to their guests. “Allow me the honor to
introduce to you my dearest partner and queen, Mari-An.”

While the fennec fox watched her friend and her cousin share
welcoming embrace she remained stood at a slight distance
deciding that it would probably be more polite to give the pair
a moment before she was introduced. Her large fluffy ears pinned
comfortably atop her head while she overheard the regal
hedgehogs kindly compliments. A warm smile spread across her
muzzle throughout. Her thoughts taking her adrift elsewhere for
a moment. ‘So this is what a happy family looks like huh?..’
Coming out of her daze in time to see that Amy was now gesturing
towards her she took a couple of nervous steps closer before
allowing the king to take hold of her hand though his outdated
mannerisms did prompt a blink or two. A light flush of pink
tinting her white muzzle she found her voice. “Oh the pleasure
is all mine! Thank you both for welcoming me into your home.”
Placing her arms behind her back she watched in awe as the queen
of Mercia made her towards them a vision of elegance and poise.
She wasn’t even trying to be and Sonya felt intimidated.
“Amy’s right. You are a shameless flatterer darling but I
wouldn’t have you any other way.” Taking a giving her husbands
hand an affectionate squeeze, the crimson furred beauty moved
forward to embrace the two girls. Engulfing Amy in a mint and
tea tree oil scented fold first like rob had done she pulled
back minutes after to fondly look her over. “I can’t tell you
how happy I am your’re here. I mean my husband has been beside
himself with excitement for weeks and now you’ve arrived I dare
say our Christmas is quite complete.” Turning her attention now
on the clearly nervous fennec she offered her a soft smile in
the hopes to elevate those nerves, before she moved in to hold
and observe her. “Sonya Heart. Amy has told us little beyond
marvellous things about you in her letters. I look forward to
getting to know you better during your stay here.” Stepping back
into line beside her husband in a way that just seemed fluent to
the fennec watching her she addressed them both once more. “You
both must be exhausted from the journey. Once your’re both more
settled we would love to hear all about it.”
