Ice Skating Escapades! [Open Thread.]

It was the most wonderful time of year again, twinkling lights,
Christmas themed music all round, the weather that brought out
jackets and coats of all different shapes and sizes.
Unfortunately so far they hadn’t been lucky enough experience
anything close to snow but thick layers of thick frost glistened
and coated everything in its path beautifully. There was just
something about winter that made Sonya feel hopeful. She
supposed it was because with the big day coming up everyone
around her was in higher spirits. She could feel the flurry of
happiness radiating from the atmosphere, smiling absent mindedly
to herself the fennec leaned herself downwards to continue
lacing up her white ice skates. From the looks of things no one
else that she’d invited had arrived yet so now it was just a
matter of waiting. Feeling self conscious Sonya did her best to
occupy herself whilst she waited, casually but also not so
casually scrolling through her phone.

Viola had been walking in the city, it seemed much safer than
the wooded area she lived in, brighter too. And although she
really didn't like being in the city, she did however love the
beautiful Christmas lights. Cool and crisp air fill her lungs as
she took in a breath, making her smile. She did love the cold
because one could never get too cold, just add more layers. The
female passed by the skating rink and stopped from the sparkling
lights that shown from the ice, it captivated her to come take a
closer look at the scene. That's when she noticed a blonde
fennec sitting on a bench and looking at her phone. It was just
one person, so talking shouldn't be so much of a problem to her.
"Hello there, what are you doing out here by yourself?" She
asked in a kind and curious tone. Viola didn't sit nor stand too
close to her so not to be intrude, she didn't want to give off a
bad vibe at all.

Once again the Christmas season had arrived and its effect was
once again felt everywhere in the city. Even James found himself
smiling more than normal as he walked through the streets
towards the Ice Rink. Under normal circumstances it was today he
would meet with Rouge and drink coffee. But this wasn't a normal
set of circumstances and, much as he dreaded the potential
outcome, he felt he had to do something special because of it.
Even if he was risking mucking it up and make a fool of himself,
given he had never tried ice skating.
To this end, he had rented a pair of ice skates and now just had
to go through with it as he stood and looked at the ice rink.
Taking a deep breath, he reached for his phone and called Rouge,
even if he had to use her work-phone to reach her.
"Hello Rouge, this is James," he said once through to her or the
answering machine, "listen, i know we had our meeting scheduled
at the normal place... but i- i kinda feel that this season
calls for something... special given it is that season. I- i am
down at the Ice Rink if you wanna join me for the evening."
There, he had asked her, now all there was to do was wait.

Rouge was still in her apartment, it was her usual coffee
meeting with James and last time went downhill. She knew that it
was still tense, or at least she thought but decided to get
ready nonetheless. Then she heard her phone ring but could not
reach it in time only to hear the answering machine record the
message. ''Hello Rouge, this is James, listen, I know we had our
meeting scheduled at the normal place... but I- I kinda feel
that this season calls for something... special given it is that
season. I- I am down at the Ice Rink if you wanna join me for
the evening." It felt strange but the invitation had made her
cheeks turn red and her teeth clenched together. Why a simple
invitation to go skating had such power over her? She didn't
know why but went to change for something more jolly than her
usual chest plate and black leggings. Instead, she went for a
white fitted shirt and a short skirt combined with tights with a
snowflakes print. '' get a hold of yourself bat, this is just
our usual thing. Nothing to worry about much less dolling
yourself up for a friend. Well, it's always a good thing to feel
confident in our own skin and clothes''She said to herself
before rushing out of her domicile to join her friend at the ice
rink.
Before she left the bat had slipped on a short white cloak with
white fur trims and stopped by the bathroom to fastened her hair
in a ponytail with a black scrunchy and applied blue lipstick to
had to her look. It was her way to cool down, so maybe she
wouldn't make a fool of herself in front of her friend. She knew
how to dance and fight, but not skating and she'd have to cheat
and use her wings to keep her balance. She went to the front
desk and rented a pair of white ice skates and flew to James in
hope to surprise him from behind. ''You still owe me a coffee,
Mitchells.'' She said playfully after poking him on the shoulder
with a nervous smile.

Sonya was so focused on trying to look like she was immersed in
whatever she was doing on her phone that when she heard a
familiar voice near by she nearly hit the roof. Accidentally
dropping her phone in her lap, the fennec glanced up at the
purple hedgehog in question, a look of cheerful recognition
flickering across her features at the sight of her. “Hey
there!.. Viola isn’t it? Mobius tourist chick?” Her
light teasing out of the way the fennec gave her skate covered
feet a wiggle, before she continued. “Well.. I’m
supposed to be meeting friends here but no ones turned up yet so
they’re probably still on they’re way or they think
I’m crazy for wanting to ice skate so close to Christmas
when the rank is heaving.” Gesturing her head briefly
towards the now gradually crowded ice rink, the blonde drummed
her fingers lightly against her lap.
Suddenly spotting two more familiar faces from the corner of her
eye, the blonde raised a casual hand waving it in the direction
of the white furred Bat and James who she recognised more from
more serious encounters. "HEY ROUGE!" Her voice taking on new
levels of startling confidence because she was attempting to
interact with someone she was comfortable with it didn't matter
that her unexpected raise in volume turned the heads of multiple
strangers, she then turned her attention back to Viola, her
expression apologetic. “Sorry for the yelling .. I think
my friend is here with someone like a someone someone so
it’s my job to embarrass her like the good best friend I
am.” Letting out a small chuckle, she asked the hedgehog.
“Are you here meeting up with anyone?”

Down on the Ice Rink, Sabine was having her hands full as she
watched her little brother trying to keep up with her as they
made their way around the rink. It had been a long time since
she had tried to do anything like this. The last time she really
did this was when she was in school. But even then, she had
liked it and never really forgot it and now that Sebastian had
talked her into going outside and do something fun she had
decided to take him here and she didn't regret it.
Granted it could be hard to see that they were related when
Sebastian looked normal in his fur color while she was pitch
black. But that didn't matter, nothing mattered except her
brother having fun right now.
Sebastian meanwhile had been smiling the whole time as he
struggled with maintaining his balance and keep up with his
sister.
"Are you having fun Sebastian?" Sabine asked as she turned to
watch her brother, "you're doing great."
"Ye- yes," he answered as be almost fell over, "it- it is great.
I am so glad we went outside to do something else."
Sabine just chuckled as she came over and hugged him, "how could
i say no to you at a time like this? Come now, let's go for
another round. You'll be an expert by the time we head home."
"Right behind you sister!" Sebastian yelled with enthusiasm as
they took off, only for him to fall flat on his face with an off
and get back up to not fall behind, even if Sabine slowed down
to make sure that never happened.

Viola's eyes widened when she realized that she startled the
poor woman. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" She immediately
responded out of reaction to what happened. Nodding once to the
name, but a raised brow from the comment. "Um, yeah, I suppose
'tourist chick' could fit since I don't live in Mobotropolis.
But, I'm betting that they don't think your crazy, just a little
busy giving the time of year it is. I'm sure your friends will
come when they can." And just like that, the fennec had yelled a
name she had heard before, her purple ears lowering and closing
one eye as she turned her head to see the direction she was
yelling in. That's when she saw the white bat and a male she's
never seen before. Vi then opened her eye back up and ears going
back into their normal place as she looked back at Sonya with a
small laugh from what she had said. "No, no, that's okay. It's
your rightful duty as a best friend to embarrass her, pretty
sure it's in the rule book." She added to what Sonya had said,
she was kind of feeling a little more comfortable from the small
conversation. But the question of her meeting up with someone
had her put her hands up chest high with them both moving in a
side to side waving motion and little chuckle. "No, not meeting
anyone. No one to meet. Just walking through and noticed the
pretty lights glistening off the ice."

James jumped slightly and whipped around when Rouge approached
him from behind and tapped him on the shoulder, only to
awkwardly return the smile as he saw her getup and her own
nervous smile. Strange, why would she be nervous about this? She
was the social one. Compared to her, he was as standard as it
came. With a decent jacket and pants to keep the cold at bay.
"I- i suppose so. We can see to that after this, can't we?" he
asked her as he started to fasten his skates, "i- i am just glad
you wanted to come. I figured we should do something special...
it is the season after all... and we normally just meet and
drink coffee."
So far so good, although it seemed to be slightly more than he
had bargained for. But he pushed any and all strange emotions
aside as he tried to get back up once he had laced the skates
effectively.
"Now, a- are you ready for-" he was about to ask when Sonya
suddenly called out to Rouge from the sideline, which also
caught him off guard, although he didn't understand why she'd do
it to begin with. Surely she could just come over and say hello.
That little thing aside, he kept his focus on what mattered
right now, "shall we give it a go? I- i must admit i have never
done this before."

Rouge was fidgeting and nodded before she heard the Fennec's
voice loudly calling her from afar. Right as James to ask her if
she was ready to go skating she blushed deeply from the
humiliation of having her name shout in a crowd to attract all
the attention over her.'' I must admit, I never skated before
either and I thought about cheating and using my wings to keep
my balance and hopefully not make a fool of myself...But Sonya
m-made sure to doom me now...'' She said chuckling and extended
her hand to reach for James's. ''If one of us crash, the other
could try to lift them up or we'll both crash on the ice?'' She
couldn't help but chuckle nervously and grimace knowing that all
eyes were on her now. ''Also...r-remind me to scowl Sonya
later...''She was embarrassed, amused and nervous. But why? The
white Chiroptera had not a clue but it was a familiar feeling,
it was just a little more intense than it usually was.

"Then i- i guess we found something that we're equally bad at,"
James sighed as he looked at Rouge's reaction confused. As if it
wasn't strange enough that Sonya would call her out like that,
now Rouge was fidgeting in response. Sure it drew attention to
them, but why should they care? They were off duty there was
nothing that could damage PR here if they crashed and fall. Only
their own egos... and James certainly lacked that, "i... i don't
get it. But then again, i don't get a lot of things. But let's
give it a go."
He took her hand and carefully made his way towards the ice
rink, it was all or nothing now, "and... if you want me to do
that. Sure, i will remind you when we leave."
