The Duo and Doubles

Today was a day the girls had seemed to be looking forward to,
despite being so young they might not even quite know just what
exactly they were doing yet. They knew they were going to see
someone specific though and that alone seemed to make them
excited. Tails had taken on the job of taking them to where they
needed to be this time around as their parents were currently
busy with other important things.
To make things a little easier for himself, the fox would slip
on a baby double sided baby carrier and slipped the very small
Sapphire into the front seat and Caroline into the back one. It
made keeping an eye on them and carrying the two at the same
time much easier, even if he looked a little silly in the
process.
"Are we dere yet Uncle Tails?" Caroline would pipe up, they were
still in his workshop and he had opened the large workshop
doors, pulling the bricks to stop the wheels of the plane out
from their usual spots. Sapphire reached her little hands out
towards the plane and blew a raspberry to imitate the sound of
the plane propellers. "[shadow=orange,right]Not yet, we have one
last thing to do to get there, I think you'll like it[/shadow]"
Using his tails to fly up onto the plane, the fox would
carefully put the two girls into two empty back seats which he
had fitted out with baby plane seats just for them, he'd make
sure he had put them in well and done up their seat-belt's right
and proper, before placing little helmets with goggles on their
heads and then jumping into the driver seat.
"[shadow=orange,right]Hold on girls, we'll be there
soon![/shadow]" And with that, the fox would start up the plane
and fly off with the two in the back.
They were going somewhere very specific today and Tails was sure
they were being waited on. Along the way there, Sapphire
squealed with excitement and kicked her legs, throwing her hands
up in the air as they soared through the sky, Caroline however
seemed to remain rather quiet and collected, and perhaps a
little fearful of the heights?
It wouldn't be too long though and soon enough, Tails would be
declining in height and going in for a landing, Caroline would
try to peek and see where it was he was landing but the heights
scared her back into her seat. As the wind blowed his hair back,
Tails kept his eyes on where he was focusing on landing, he knew
there was a plane hatch, he just hoped it'd open in time for him
and the girls.
Sure enough, it did, a cliff near water just like usual, the
water at the bottom would split, and there the hanger was. As
smooth as silk from his years of doing this, Tails would run the
plane down and land it shortly after the hanger had come into
view, letting it run down the track a bit before finally
stopping, he'd cut the engine off and wait until the propellers
stopped before pulling his own helmet off and hopping out of the
plane to help the girls out of their seats. Sapphire by now was
squirming with excitement in her seat and Tails would have to
take extra care to make sure she didn't zoom off when he let her
out of her seat, opting to pick her up and hold her over his
shoulder carefully so her little eager feet kicked into his
shoulder instead.
Caroline of course made less of a fuss but seemed to hang onto
Tails' arm after being let out of her seat. She wasn't overly
shy but she was known to have her moments.
"[shadow=orange,right]Hey, no need to be scared, you're in good
hands here[/shadow]" He'd reassure the young feline, giving her
hair a light ruffle as he did to make her feel better.

As far as the oddly well timed occurrences went, everything was
smooth sailing... Or flying, as the case may be. When Tails
landed his aircraft, disembarking with the two younglings easily
reeled in and kept in check, as a good uncle should very much be
capable of doing— one last well timed thing happened, up on the
hangar balcony an automatic sliding door opened, revealing a
Mobian clad in mostly greys and whites. They were wearing a high
tech mesh under suit with a simple helmet with a teal visor, a
pristine white lab coat, black chrome wrist-ringed gloves and
boots of the same aesthetic as the gloves. Only their mouth was
reasonably visible, and it was uncertain as to what species it
belonged to since there was nothing else to indicate anything of
the sort.
The individual waved to Tails with a great amount of energy and
excitement. "Welcome, welcome, hello there!" He chimed, deftly
hoisting himself over the balcony railing, landing perfectly on
the hangar floor below. Nice.
Readjusting his collar, he approached the trio and gave a polite
bow. "Good day to you Tails, I trust you are doing well?" Now
that the man was closer, his eyes would be somewhat visible
through the tint of the visor. They were friendly eyes, but not
just that; they were curious and rather wise looking too!
"Goodness, it seems much has changed in two years or so—" He
smiled to Caroline, and then to Sapphire if she was able to see
him. "Hey there, Caroline, Sapphire. I don't know if you
remember me all too well, but your parents and of course your
uncle Tails here know me as Doubles." He said with a... Dorky
thumbs up and an equally dorky grin. Amazing. "So, how are you
all doing today?" He asked the girls, patiently awaiting any
form of response.

When the door automatically opened, Tails' ears flicked and he
let out a small sigh of relief, he loved the two girls but they
were an absolute handful still to him at the best of times.
Especially with their growing powers. The fox gave a slight tilt
of his head as he looked over Doubles' attire for today, mesh
under suit, simple helmet, teal visor, a white lab coat, black
gloves and boots, not something he saw the mobian in most the
time but a good look nonetheless. Tails would scoff an amused
smile up after Doubles landed perfectly on the hangar floor the
way he had, still as agile as ever. What a warm welcome it was
too.
Tails would- While still holding onto the girls- Bow back to
Doubles in greeting, "[shadow=orange,right]I suppose you could
say that, If busy counts as such, these two are a handful, I've
had them for almost two full days so as you can imagine, I'm
more then happy to hand them to someone else for a little
while[/shadow]" And there were two people he knew he could trust
to take special care of the two, Doubles was one of them. Now
that he was closer too, Doubles would probably be able to see
tufts of Tails' fur were all messed up and out of place, unkept
or otherwise singed, but not in the way it usually was from
Tails' work. But what could've caused them?
"[shadow=orange,right]I apologize if we came a bit earlier then
you were expecting or anything like that, Caroline's been,
well-[/shadow]" "Bad" Caroline answered, the fox would respond
by shaking his head in disagreement, giving her an encouraging
smile, "[shadow=orange,right]No not bad, you've just been having
trouble that's all, Doubles here is going to help you[/shadow]"
"[sub]That's what the other kids called me..[/sub]" She would
mutter before hiding half her face behind Tails' arm, still
clinging onto it.
She did however look to Doubles when he addressed her and her
sister, his eyes were kind and full of wisdom, he also seemed to
know the two and gave a friendly thumbs up with a silly looking
grin, but Caroline shied away and seemed to start tearing up
after seeing the white coat Doubles was wearing. Her claws
extended out and hooked into Tails' arm, thankfully she seemed
to have latched onto his not fully organic one, although it
looked pretty convincing as one, so Tails didn't react as bad to
the pain of having tiny claws dig into him as much as he would
have had it of been his other arm. "Are you a special doctor?"
She'd ask Doubles through her tears, "Are you going to make me
not bad?" The young girl seemed scared and confused as to what
was going on, her earlier excitement replaced with fear, all the
while an odd and rather strong feeling of power seemed to grow,
the more she got upset.
Sapphire tried to copy Doubles' dorky thumbs up and when she
reckoned she had it down well enough, she shot it back at him
and smiled, letting out a giggle before noticing her sister's
stress, "[shadow=orange,right]She's had a long day[/shadow]"
Tails would answer for Caroline, looking a bit stressed out
himself as Sapphire crawled over him to try and reach both
Caroline and Doubles at the same time, seemingly not being able
to make up her mind on who she wanted to go to first. "Blllll!"

Doubles nodded to tails. "At the very least you could say you
are doing something worthwhile. You are making sure your best
friend's children are safe and looked after while he is
otherwise occupied." Of course, Doubles understood what Tails
meant. The fox looked rather frazzled and not in the usual
'eureka' followed by an invention of his going boom kind of way.
Doubles waved away Tails' concerns. "It's fine. I made sure that
I wasn't doing anything that needed my full undivided attention
while waiting."
With a frown, Doubles also shook his head for the same reason as
Tails. "You haven't done anything rude or nasty since you got
here, so you're not bad at all, I say. In fact, you are being
very nice." Doubles held a hand up in a rather scholarly manner
to draw attention calmly, offering a reassuring smile to
Caroline as well. "You get gold stars for behaving for your
uncle Tails... Erm, as soon as I can find you some gold stars,
aheh~" He held a hand at the back of his neck with a chuckle for
a moment. Talk of other children being mean was unsettling
however. "Those other kids just don't know you well enough yet,
they'll see soon that you're a gifted young lady of many
talents, not someone who is bad." Seemingly noticing he was sort
of rambling, Doubles cleared his throat and bowed again showing
that he was apologetic for going off on a tangent.
"No, no, I am not a doctor. Similar to your uncle Tails here, I
make and build some fun things that make life easier. Since you
and your sister have been so well behaved since you got here. I
think you both deserve a reward. Would you like to have a look
at some of the things I've made?" Taking Caroline's questioning
seriously, Doubles spoke in a calmer and more direct manner to
help ease her anxiety. "I was misunderstood when I was young
too, for something I didn't choose to have. I understand how you
might be feeling, but you don't have to tell me anything that
you don't want to." He added, refusing to treat her like
something to be 'fixed', 'analyzed' or 'figured out'. Rather, he
wanted to treat her in her entirety like someone that can ask
for help if she needs to.
Seeing Sapphire want to go to Caroline was heartwarming.
"Awwwh..." Doubles nodded to Tails. "I think you should let her
give her big sis a hug, yeah?" He said with a smile. "I think I
can handle the rest from here."

Tails would nod back with a smile, worthwhile indeed, he loved
his best friend's daughters even if they were troublesome most
of the time, Sonic was a busy guy sometimes and so was his
partner, so he was happy to fill in for them until they got
back. Besides today he had been asked to take them both here
specifically to Doubles for a reason. "[shadow=orange,right]Of
course, of course, that's why I always give a heads up! I do
have to get back to Robin today as he isn't feeling very well,
he's a smart boy though, I left him in Ty's care until I get
back[/shadow]" Tails still seemed a bit worried though, the
young boy that he had taken to calling Robin was one who was
rather new to the scene but not as new as he used to be at this
point, Tails seemingly had already gotten used to the young lad
after having taken him under his wing a short while ago when the
boy and a basket turned up near his workshop.
When Doubles spoke to her again Caroline hid behind Tails' arm
again or at least, tried to as much as she could, peeking one
eye out to look at the other adult mobian. He said she was being
nice! That was a change for sure. Followed by this he then held
up a hand and assured her she would get gold stars for being
good for Uncle Tails-- Well at least when Doubles found some.
This made the young girl smile, she'd never gotten them in kindy
yet so getting some here meant a lot to her even if it wasn't
kindergarten. Tails would ruffle the kitten's hair and gently
peel her off of his arm, setting her down in front of Doubles
and giving her an encouraging push and a pat on the back, giving
her a look that said that she could do it.
At first she kind of fumbled her hands together, rubbing the
little paw beans to try and soothe her nerves, but she was
listening and appreciated what he said about the other kids.
Maybe he was right? Maybe they could be her friends in time?
She'd like more friends then just her sister, even Robin was
hesitant towards her at this point in time. But what Doubles
said gave her hope that maybe things could change. "Thank you
Sir" She'd respond with politely, not sure what else to do other
then to thank him for his kind words and understanding.
When Doubles compared himself to someone she was familiar and
comfortable with, the cat seemed to loosen up a little bit, if
he was like Tails, how bad could he really be? She then perked
up more at the mention of a reward, "Yes please!" The way he
spoke when he addressed her was very calming and a nice change
of pace to the young half feline, and she would smile at him
finally properly. She was in the same boat as when he was
younger, he understood. She wondered what it was he got
misunderstood about when he was younger too, but if he said she
didnt have to tell anything she didn't want to, the same respect
would be granted back to him. For now perhaps it was best not to
ask.
Tails would smile and nod again, carefully lifting Sapphire up
and passing her down to her sister, which Sapphire then took the
chance to promptly poke Caroline's nose, "Beep beep!" "Saphy!"
The cat would giggle. Tails would then swish his tails and give
Doubles a thankful nod, "[shadow=orange,right]Just let me know
when you need me to pick them up for you, thank you for taking
them in today Doubles, I know you'll do well[/shadow]" With that
said, he'd give the girls a quick hug, before pulling his pilot
goggles back on as he hopped back into his plane, starting it
back up and taking off soon after, leaving the girls with
Doubles. "Is it okay to ask something?" Caroline would say,
holding onto her younger sister while looking up at Doubles to
be polite, pausing to give him time to respond, if he gave her
the go ahead she would then ask, "Why are you out here? Are you
like Uncle Knuckles?" She then looked away a little shyly,
hoping she hadn't come off as rude for asking.

"Indeed, and I greatly appreciate the communication." Doubles
smiled before showing some concern. "Ahh yes, I shall not keep
you then." He nodded to tails, understanding the fox's duty to
Robin as an adoptive father figure ever since the day he was
found.
Doubles was very patient with Caroline, understanding why she
would be acting so shy. When she smiled however, so did he,
showing her it was okay to just be herself. He was rather glad
that she was into the idea of little gold stars and such...
Though to be fair he was talking to a six year old, so
everything more or less made sense as to her responses to
certain things. At least she was being a little bit more
confident, little steps were still steps of course. Doubles
chuckled, appreciative of her continued politeness. "Oh, there's
no need to be so formal with me. Just call me Doubles, yeah?"
Even if she was a kid, Doubles wasn't exactly her teacher or
anything... Well, just yet, anyway.
Caroline was even excited to have a look at some of Doubles'
inventions, now that was a welcome surprise! "Then it will be my
pleasure to show you two some stuff." Doubles paused, tapping
his chin, perhaps thinking of what to go with first. Seeing
Caroline and Sapphire interact got another smile from Doubles.
'Now that is a good pair of siblings, for sure.' He thought.
Doubles gave Tails a thumbs up. "Of course, I'll let you know.
You have no need to worry." He returned a polite nod as well.
"You take care now okay? Say hi to the others for me, would
you?"
For the moment, Doubles gestured for Caroline and Sapphire to
follow him to quickly get up to the balcony so that Tails could
properly disembark from the hangar as soon as he was ready.
"Come along girls, it'll be easy to wave to your Uncle Tails up
on the balcony there~" Doubles said with a smile. When Tails
finally left, Caroline seemed to have a question. "Oh? Of
course, go ahead." Doubles tilted his head slightly, wondering
what exactly she could ask, and Doubles found the question
rather interesting, smiling to Caroline for asking. "Oo,
Interesting. I'm curious to know what you mean exactly?" Holding
out a hand for the two girls to follow him once more to the
corridor he entered the hangar from. Doubles walked slowly to
account for their little legs, and always kept his attention on
them so that they would not wander and get lost. "In a way I
suppose I am similar to Knuckles too, but I'll be able to give
you a better answer if you explain what you're thinking a little
more."

Tails thanked Doubles one last time, assuring him he'd say hi to
everyone else for him, before then giving the three time to move
away from the plane before looking into taking off, grateful
Doubles had taken them in not only to teach them things but also
so he could keep an eye on Robin and not let the girls get sick
from him in the process.
With the fox gone it left Doubles with just the two young girls,
who seemed as curious as ever now about their surroundings.
Sapphire struggled out of Caroline's arms, plopping onto the
floor before wobbling up onto her feet and smiling, she liked
this Doubles man, he seemed friendly and fun and gave out gold
stars! What more could she ask for?
Caroline's ears flattened back a little bit out of shyness but
she'd smile still when he said she didn't need to be so formal
with him, and could simply call him Doubles, she nodded to let
him know she understood his request. "I'll keep that in mind"
"It's always exciting seeing what Tails builds" She'd say to
Doubles, giving him a look that read that she seemed to be just
as excited to see his as she was when she went to see Tails'
When gestured, Caroline would follow, Sapphire seemed distracted
but was soon scooped up by her older sister which Caroline then
promptly hurried off after Doubles to catch up with him.
"Bacony!" Sapphire clapped her hands and smiled, while Caroline
shook her head a little bit, following Doubles up. The girls
waved Tails off as he flew, seemingly even more curious then
before about the area they were now in. It was so new and
different to what they were used to!
Caroline would set her little sister back down so she could
reach up and try to grab Doubles' hand when he offered his hands
to them, the half feline would hesitantly take careful hold of
his hand, while Sapphire was more then eager to, although it
took basically all of her current height to get a good enough
grip. Both seemed grateful he was taking into account that their
legs were a lot shorter then his currently, although once she
got the hang of it, Sapphire seemed to move ahead faster then
the other two, while still keeping a hold of Doubles' hand.
Fast. Like her father. Caroline seemed to pull a little in
different directions, she was curious and wanted to explore, but
could compose herself enough for it to only be gentle tugs of
her hand. "I mean, Uncle Knuckles is on his island because he
has to be, to protect something, is that why you're here too?
Are you keeping something safe?" Big questions for such a small
girl. "You're both kind" Caroline would say when he supposed he
was also similar to Knuckles, "And friendly, trustworthy"
"Stwong!" Sapphire would shout, as she pumped an arm for
exaggeration, making Caroline burst into giggles. Sapphire then
let go of his hand though and looked up at the adult mobian,
giving a gentle tug on the bottom of his clothing, "Excuse me..
Is it okay if you cawwy me? I can't weach well" Caroline gave
Doubles hand a gentle squeeze, "She's still learning how to say
her r's right, she's been having trouble getting the hang of it"
Sapphire looked a little anxious about this being said, so
Caroline promptly followed it up with; "But she'll get the hang
of it soon, I know she will!"

"Ohp-" Doubles payed some extra attention to Sapphire, just to
see if she was okay with standing up. He gave the little one a
thumbs up. "Everything okay?" Of course, Caroline was processing
Doubles' earlier request to not be so formal, and she took it
well after a moment. He nodded in return to let Caroline know he
heard her answer.
"Do you have a favorite thing from what Tails has made?" Doubles
asked as the trio moved along to get out of the way. He
chuckled, finding pride in Sapphire's efforts to pronounce words
to the best of her ability. It seemed to remind him of
something, seeing these two siblings. Taking a firm yet
sensitive hold on Caroline's and Sapphire's hands to guide
them. Still taking into account their heights in comparison,
Doubles didn't go any faster than they could. Of course, he also
noted some important factors; one being that Sapphire very
clearly took after her father besides being blue— it was almost
as if this wasn't a surprise. Caroline on the other hand seemed
curious about going any-which way at the moment, which was fair
enough; Doubles could empathize with that since he had a curious
nature too. "Mhm, that is correct, Knuckles has a very important
job." Doubles nodded, knowing full well the gravity of guarding
the Master Emerald. "I find it easier to focus on work out here.
But there is something very important to me on this island— its
nothing like what Knuckles is guarding, but.... Hmm, maybe I can
show you it another time? Its quite far from here and I'm not
sure when your parents will be done with what they're doing." Or
how long Tails needed to take a rest for since he looked rather
frazzled, either or.
The further comparison didn't go unnoticed either, Doubles
smiled at the girls. "That is very kind of you to say too. Maybe
you two are like Knuckles as well?" He said, mostly serious but
with a very slight amount of playfulness given he was taking
care of two children... Huh, odd, it looked like he was used to
that somehow? After Sapphire gave Caroline a giggle-fit, she had
a request of her own. "Oh, of course, of course." Doubles said
happily, stepping down so that he could easily let Sapphire into
his free arm as per her request. After making sure Sapphire was
safe, Doubles glanced over to Caroline. "Oh, that's perfectly
normal, He looked to Sapphire with a reassuring expression, and
following Caroline's vote of confidence he added; "When I was
your age, I had trouble with 'S' sounds. It is as your sister
said, you'll get the hang of it."
With that said, the group had now finally exited the hangar
area/complex through an automatic door. In the next area was a
short corridor with a small area at the end. There was a light
on the floor that had three rings around it, next to a panel at
the wall. Doubles thought for a moment then looked to the girls
and asked. "Are you two hungry at all? We could get some snacks
before we go and have a look at some of the stuff I've made if
you'd like?"

When given a thumbs up Sapphire would beam a big smile and give
a thumbs up back, her dad gave thumbs ups when she did good, so
that's what Doubles meant with it too right? She liked doing
good, "Eeee!" She'd giggle as she did her best to waddle along
with the two.
Caroline would think for a moment at the question that came
next, "Probably his plane, because it makes him really really
happy" The cat seemed to smile lightly after answering, her tail
giving a few bubbly flicks. The two sister's didn't seem to
notice that they individually were doing two different walking
paces on poor Doubles, as Sapphire's speed kept her focus and
Caroline's curiosity kept her's. "Oh" The feline would look up
at Doubles, looking even more intrigued then before. What could
be on the island here with him? "Mother and Father are out for
the week, Tails has us until then" She'd hold onto Doubles' hand
a little tighter while her other hand moved to grab at the chest
part of her dress. "I'm worried I upset him yesterday.." Her
claws seemed to be extending a little out of her anxiousness,
causing them to get stuck in the fabric of her little dress and
gently brush against Doubles' palm. She wasn't sure if it was
okay to explain why or not yet though and waited for Doubles to
confirm it was okay to continue. "I didn't want to mention
anything while he was here, he said not to worry about it but I
don't want to repeat what I did, but I don't know how to not to"
Sapphire seemed even more cheerful when Doubles said that maybe
the two girls were like Knuckles too "I hope that someday I'm as
tall as Uncle Knuckles!" She'd laugh, giving a few jumps to try
and increase her size. When Doubles happily accepted her
request, the hedgehog smiled and let him kneel down, clambering
into his free arm space after he had done so. Holding on tight
to help him out, the young blue girl would rest her head against
the adult mobian's shoulder, closing her eyes and resting her
breathing, feeling safe and close to people she could trust. She
did seemingly smile a bit bigger hearing she wasn't alone on
having trouble saying a certain letter though. Yeah. She really
did have a good feeling about this Doubles guy. And if her
sister said something, she trusted it held heart and truth. Her
words held a sort of special blanket of comfort that couldn't
quite be matched.
When they entered the next area, Caroline kept close to Doubles,
this place was bigger then she previously thought and she didn't
want to get lost despite wanting to explore at the same time.
When asked about if they were hungry, Sapphire didn't seem to
respond, she'd seemingly fallen asleep in Doubles' arms.
Caroline paused for a moment before nodding lightly, "If it's
okay to, I think some snacks would be good, for Sapphire too,
she burns off a lot of energy really quickly and -" She looked
up and made a small "oh" sound, "- and tends to fall asleep at
random because of it"

Doubles, for some reason, wasn't too surprised by Caroline's
answer. "Mhm, I see." He nodded. "The Tornado MK.IV, a highly
refined efficient machine built for utmost precision and
aerodynamics. Honestly, one of Tails' greatest crafts, I do
agree." This time, he was fully aware that he was 'nerding out'
so to speak, it really showed how much he respected a fellow
inventor and the idea of inventing things for the improvement of
life as opposed to less morally sound means— like that of Eggman
and any similarly minded villain.
Sonic and Karahl were gone for a week? Interesting, from
Doubles' perspective. "Okay, and is that starting today or from
yesterday?" Apparently Caroline thought she upset Tails somehow.
Doubles nodded and respectfully remained silent, allowing
Caroline to explain should she choose to. "Well, I'm guessing
you apologized for whatever happened. I've known him for quite a
while, Tails is a very understanding man. But, if you're still
not sure, would you like some advice on it?" Doubles asked,
willing to help— again only if Caroline decided she needed it.
Chuckling at Sapphire's eagerness, Doubles couldn't help but
smile. "Well, you should tell him to watch out then huh?" Soon
enough it seemed she had burned out of all her energy and fell
asleep. If she took after her father as much as Doubles thought;
this wasn't a surprise at all. Looking to Caroline, Doubles gave
a small nod. "Of course its okay. Do you have any preferences
for snacks?" Even Caroline was attentive to Sapphire's needs,
which was very good of her as a sibling. "I see, and is there
any food that helps her the most? Chilidogs, maybe?" Doubles
moved over to the panel at the wall and pressed a few buttons.
The lights on the floor below the trio gave off a soft glow as a
unique kind of elevator formed around them. The wall with the
panel on it shifted aside, showing a fancy looking side-rail
system that the fancy elevator began to move down, with the wall
closing behind as it went along.
In less than a minute, it arrived at a similar sort of station,
but there were more doorways to go through from here. "Here, the
kitchen is through the door on the right, follow me~"
