Daddy Daughter Time

Despite having two daughters that were blood relatives the
Hedgehog family often acted like they were from two fractured
families that came together to make a bigger one; in the way
that one child was very close with their mother while the other
spent a lot of her time following her father. The two often
played favorites with their children as Sonic still very much
acted like a kid himself while Karahl was cold to a point where
it was hard to get a read on her emotions; overall the tiger and
blue hedgehog weren't great parents. It had gotten so bad to a
point where Sapphire almost knew nothing about her mother and
Caroline wasn't even on her Father's radar.
This dysfunctional behavior came to a boil when Sonic started
referring to Caroline as 'the other one' causing Karahl to take
action. No more would Sapphire be allowed to run rampant under
her father's carefree guidance while Caroline was subject to
severe discipline and high standards of her strict mother.
Karahl had pushed Caroline and Sonic out of the house to bond
while she and Sapphire got better acquainted. Sonic blinked as
if everything had happened too fast even for him as the door to
their small lakeside home slammed shut behind them as the cat
and the hedgehog had nothing but the cloths on their backs and
each other. Sonic gave an annoyed groan that was quickly
dismissed as he jumped onto one foot eyes shooting open in
response to the warning roar Karahl gave as if she could sense
her husband's displeasure without even seeing it. As if running
for his life Sonic grabbed his daughter's hand and pulled her to
the outskirts of the city. In time he looked down to the cat
wearing the red coat with an expression like he didn't know
where to start. "So how do you know Karahl?." He said out loud
as if trying to make a joke of the situation.

While she was a lot closer to her mother then she was to her
father, she still found her mother to be quite scary when she
wanted to be. Having a lot of her own power or not, Karahl was
still not someone to take lightly, being one of her daughters
perhaps made Caroline someone who knew this best.
As her sister was kept inside and she found herself pushed
outside with the blue hedgehog that was her father, she found
that she too felt like she didn't know what to do or where to
start, they were so different personality wise it was no wonder
her little sister got along well with him more then she did. But
how did she manage to get along with Sapphire if she was so much
like their dad?
Caroline soon found herself being taken by the hand and pulled
to the outskirts of the city, surprisingly, she didn't try to
pull away and simply let it happen. When Sonic finally said
something, Caroline did actually manage a small smile at what he
asked. Clearly, he was just as unsure about what to do as she
was. "Probably from that one time she birthed me" She'd reply
back with a hint of that sass Sapphire dealt out so often. "How
about you? Mum's told me how you met once or twice but I don't
think I've heard the story from you before, at least not more
recently"

"Oh yeah I was there for that. You weren't much of a talker back
then, you mainly just let out these cute little mews for the
first three years of your life. Your mother may seem like a
hardass but she would just melt when she saw you meow and reach
out for something."
Sonic scratched at his damaged ear while reflecting on his
daughter's statement before shaking his head. "Yeah that story
isn't exactly age appropriate. Besides I know how much you look
up to your mother so I'll spare you the details of how I totally
humiliated her during our first encounter." Sonic often had
selective memory or he may have forgotten during their first
encounter his lover left him passed out in a pool of his own
blood with three cracked ribs. "Let's forget about the past and
focus on the now. I wanna know all about you, what's your
favorite film, what do you like to do for fun and I've never
checked but you didn't pick up the family taste for chilidogs
did you? Speaking of our tastes your mother she never served you
any funny tasting meat did she?" Sonic asked curious if Karahl's
lifestyle choice would extend to the other white cat in the
family.

Caroline couldn't help but to fully smile at the part about her
being a baby and making little mews for noises, shortly after
her smile though she rubbed behind her head and looked a little
embarrassed, it was a good thing he hand't yet brought out the
baby photos around anyone she liked, poor Sapphire probably
suffered that blow though. "She mentioned I used to love
grabbing your nose, when I was that age, that or people's tails,
especially Tails'" She smiled again at the thought. Maybe they
weren't as many worlds apart as she originally thought?
"Age appropriate? Father I'm 21 now" She'd rather elegantly
place her hands on the sides of her hips, she wasn't sure if he
was being entirely truthful about the humiliated part, but she
could ask her mother about it later. When Sonic started to ask
about her, her tail flicked a bit anxiously. "Uhm... For the
chilidog thing I don't dislike them but they're not my favourite
thing to eat, to put it simply, I think the food I enjoy most
are certain types of sushi" She seemed hesitant on the other
questions. "I'm not too sure on the movie one actually, though I
did enjoy this one movie we watched when I was younger about two
sisters, one had powers she didn't control very well and she
locked her sister out to keep her safe" Sounded kinda familiar
in a sense. "For the funny tasting meat, no actually, but I know
why you're asking, has she ever done that to you?" For some
reason, she left the fun question for last. "..For fun? I like
to practice with Mr Doppel, or hang out with Sapphire and Robin"
She put a hand to her chin in thought, why was this question so
difficult? Probably because they had different ideas of fun "Mr
Doppel's kids are pretty fun to hang out with too.. " She bit
her lower lip and trailed off a little bit, her answers weren't
anything too exciting, but she had a question of her own. "I
know this is probably odd to ask but, how did you know you had a
thing for mum way back when you first got together? How can you
tell? What do you do with those kinds of feelings?" Pretty
specific questioning but maybe she had a reason as to why she
was asking such things.

"I was eighteen and I still wasn't ready." Sonic shuddered
thinking back to the horrors Karahl had subjected him to during
their first encounter. When Caroline let slip she was twenty-one
Sonic suddenly remembered he was thirty-nine and realized just
how much his daughter had grown up; he still thought she was
sixteen. "Sushi huh? I used to make that for your mother there
was this odd excitement she had about watching catch fresh fish
for her." When she piped up about her favorite film he nodded in
agreement. "Oh yeah Scorched! You girls loved that film, you and
your sister would dress up as Lana and Nelsa and go to those
nerd conventions with your Uncle Tails." Taking a stroll down
memory lane with Caroline was surprising pleasant causing Sonic
to don a somber smile as he looked off into the neon lights and
signs of the city streets before them.
When the white cat brought up Robin, Sonic narrowed his eyes
into a squinting glare as he punched a fist into his open palm.
"I'd sure like to smack that kid. If he so much as looks at your
sister again, I'll rip his eyes out and shove them down his
pants so he can watch me kick the crap out of him." For some
reason the wild mutt just rubbed Sonic the wrong way and the
fact he had eyes for the jewel of his life only compounded that
dislike.
With her next batch of questions Sonic was surely starting to
notice his eldest daughter was quite the curious cat. "Well
let's just say there's a reason I don't let your mother make
chilidogs." As for her final question the blue hero took a seat
on a nearby bench and patted the spot beside him.
"Honestly....it was something I struggled for most of my life
because your mother she....well has this bad habit of killing
people for money." Saying that last part made Sonic's stomach
churn causing him to look a little pale before he continued.
"I've lost a lot of friends because of the choices I've made but
I don't regret it. You see when my comrades found out I was in
love with an assassin and refused to do anything about
it.......they all stopped talking to me.
Amy,Bunnie,Sal,Ant,Rotor even Knuckles won't give me the time of
day anymore. I mean I get it, she's doing the wrong thing and I
was meant to stop her......."
Taking a deep breath he carried on his relaxed and raspy voice
carrying a hint of regret. "I just couldn't bring myself
to.....At first it was nothing more than flirty physical
attraction but after our first encounter....I was hooked. The
raw power,pride and furiosity she held in her eyes was
intoxicating, I lost myself in her evil ways and let her get
away with murder time and time again. Slowly my reputation as a
hero was trashed; they tore down my statue and burned everything
with my face on it as it became common knowledge amoung my inner
circle that Sonic The Hedgehog had become infatuated with evil.
The sad thing is it's all true Caroline, when they came for your
mother I chose a side and I hurt my friends.......badly. I
didn't enjoy hurting them but love makes you do crazy things
kid." Now rapidly scratching at his damaged ear Sonic almost
seemed like a dog trying to scratch an itch that just wouldn't
go away. "To sum things up for you, I think you'll know you're
really in love when you're willing to do anything to protect the
object of your affection. I gave up my fame, friends and even
family to stand by your mother......My Uncle Chuck hasn't talked
to me in years and wouldn't even show up to our
wedding.....despite all that I don't regret what I did. I
was....I am a hero and your mother was the total opposite which
is probably why I'm drawn to her. I followed my heart and it got
me here. My days of being beloved and famous may be over." Sonic
seemed sad uttering that last part as his ears dropped down
while he placed his head in his hands.
"But I've got two wonderful girls and a loving wife so in a way
I hit the jackpot. Life isn't just black and white
Caroline....as you grow up you realize the world comes in shades
of gray."

At Sonic's first remark she smiled anxiously, there were lots of
things in life people were never ready for. For her it had been
discovering her powers and having them get out of hand the first
time, she was sure nobody around her at the time was ready for
that actually.
"Oh really?" She seemed rather impressed about the part where he
would catch fish for Karahl to make sushi though, "That's
impressive, was the fish ever hard to catch? I know how you are
about water sometimes" She then laughed lightly at the mention
of Scorched, "That's the one, Sapphire always looked so cute in
the Lana outfit" It was actually... Rather nice getting to be
like this with her father for once, and it sure was nice to
break the ice eventually.
Caroline covered her mouth lightly in a bit of a faked gasp at
what Sonic said about Robin, truthfully, she was hiding a sort
of smile. She didn't often get to see Sonic be all fatherly
protective of herself or Sapphire. "Oh dear, is he truly that
bad? Uncle Tails seems to think fondly of him" She did find it
amusing though and was sure Sonic wouldn't actually harm the dog
if it came down to it, he was just being protective of his
younger daughter. "Have you asked Sapphire how she even feels
about him yet though? Last thing you'd want is for her to like
him back, right?" She gave a rather mischievous giggle, she knew
how they both felt, only time would tell if Sonic did.
Caroline nodded in understanding at the chilidog part before
looking a bit surprised as he ushered for her to sit beside him
on a nearby bench, she did so swiftly after the surprised passed
though and prepared herself to listen to his words.
Hearing Sonic's story on the matter was something else to
Caroline. She knew how much his hero days and fame meant to him,
so hearing how he threw it all away when it came to love was
very touching to her. He gave up friends, family and fame and
had he not of, she and Sapphire wouldn't even be here. The
reputation he worked so hard for in the past was gone, just like
that because he chose to follow his heart. Caroline would look
aside for a moment, genuinely feeling bad for the loss Sonic
must've gone through to get to where he was now. All of that for
his partner, and his family, now that, to her, was truly
something to look up to.
"Someone once told me, that those who mind don't matter, and
those who matter don't mind" She began after Sonic finished, "I
can't say I've been through the same as you, but I have lost
friends before, for different reasons obviously, friends come
and go. The ones that truly matter though, they always stick
around" She smiled lightly at him, grateful for his advice, his
story and his view on things, they were different sure, but they
had their similarities and their differences helped each other
in some way.
Caroline would close her eyes for a moment, and when she
reopened them her eyes were no longer the red colour she always
made them be, instead they were blue, the same blue Sonic's eyes
were, so that when he looked at her, it'd be like a mirror of
his own eyes. In this moment, she didn't feel bad to have the
same eyes as her father, in fact, she felt proud to have the
eyes of someone who risked so much for the people he loved.
"Thank you for your words, it helps a lot" She'd then pause for
a moment and fiddle with her own hands, looking aside, she
wasn't sure if this was wise to say to him, but he'd trusted her
with something so close and personal, perhaps she should do the
same "I'm sorry that I asked something so close to home, I just
feel like I've gotten feelings for someone myself, and I'm not
really sure what to do or how to tell them, heck, I don't even
know if they'd ever feel the same way. Sapphire says I shouldn't
let the opportunity to say how I feel slip through my fingers,
because I won't always have the chance to tell them how I feel,
but everytime I try I get all knotted up." She looked back to
Sonic, looking confused and a little lost "Did you ever feel
that way with mother?"

Sonic waved dismissive had at Caroline's statement about
Sapphire. "Caroline, please! Sapphire doesn't even like boys
yet." He said firmly believing his tomboy of a daughter hadn't
entered her feminine phase yet. Thinking on her final question
Sonic shook his head. "I don't really get nervous around women.
When I'm around your mother's it's a similar sensation to
breaking the sound barrier all these intense feelings hit you
all at once but you blast on ahead because it's just what you
do." Sonic nudged the white cat lightly donning a cheeky smile.
"So who is it? Come on you can tell your old Dad." He said as he
ribbed her on into spilling her guts on who her special someone
was.

Caroline couldn't help but to laugh at Sonic saying Sapphire
didn't even like boys yet. "Father, she is 18, are you sure
about that?" Some would argue he wasn't the best of dad's but he
sure did care, and that mattered. "At least Robin isn't one of
Shadow's kids though right?" Knowing full well how 'well' the
two hedgehog's got along, she thought maybe that would at least
help Robin in some sort of way to getting on Sonic's good side.
She felt similar to him though, she wanted Sapphire to be with
someone who was good and kind, or not at all.
She listened again to hear that Sonic didn't get nervous like
she did, that was sort of to be expected though, he was a big
time hero and wasn't easily scared or made to be nervous.
Caroline rested her elbows on her knees and rested her cheeks
against the palms of her hands, she stayed that way until she
got nudged by Sonic and asked who it was she had feelings for.
"Uhhm.. Uh" She went noticeably pink in the cheeks and shied her
gaze away for a moment. "You know my teacher, Doubles, right?"
She'd ask, still looking away, "Recently I've been finding
myself really distracted when training with him, whenever his
offspring is around, the eldest one specifically" She sighed
lightly and then cupped her hands around her burning cheeks. "I
get this weird butterfly feeling in my stomach and it makes me
lose control of my powers, it's embarrassing, I'm always messing
up around my teacher now and it keeps getting worse and worse,
I'm surprised I haven't blown up his entire training room by
now" She sighed and gave a sad flick of her tail, causing the
little bell wrapped around it to jingle softly. Love was in no
way a bad thing but she seemed pretty down about having hard
feelings for someone else. "I don't really know what to do, it's
messing up my training and I doubt they would ever return the
feelings the same way, you know?"

Sonic shook his head confident in his words unaware of just how
wrong he was. "Your sister and I have this bond, she tells me
everything. Besides she's too busy chasing her career to think
about dating at the moment." Listening to the way Caroline
talked reminded the blue hedgehog of his betrothed causing him
to raise an eyebrow. "Offspring...eldest....Caroline did your
mother make you eat a thesaurus or something? You sound just
like she dose. Loosen up it's just you and your ol Dad. Look
your Mother wouldn't go for this but when it's just us around
drop the formalities and just call me Sonic." With that out of
the way he stood and idly poked at the cute bell on Caroline's
tail unable to resist tapping it after watching it move when her
tail twitched.
"His eldest boy huh? I'm afraid I don't know much about him but
even if he doesn't feel that way don't let it get you down.
Karahl thought I was annoying when she first met me and now look
at me. Point is I've seen you grow and you're not the type of
girl to wait around and be asked, you've gotta go out and take
what you want because that's who you are. You want my advice
invite him and your sister out to the movies and tell him all
three of you are going, then last moment ask Sapphire to drop
out and the two of you are suddenly stuck alone at a motion
picture and it's not even set up like a date so it's not
awkward."
He leaned forward cracking back before pawing at her bell again
like he was a cat in a trance.
