Care for a cup? [Rouge and James only]

A few weeks after the incident at the club. Rouge had found
herself feeling perplex about her "relationship" with a certain
law officer. She was never certain where they stood and if it
had to potential to lead to more than let's just
say...coworkers. While she was always thinking that they were
friends, now wasn't the case. Perhaps they were in fact
coworkers and no friendship would actually grow out of it.
Everytime they meet she'd just assume he was not good with
social cues but then. He had made realized that they were
nothing more than collegues and that made her feel empty. Was it
worth pursuing it or should she let go of it? It was already
hard enough lately, she had to know.
The bat had an idea, confront him once and for all and make
things crystal clear. Today would be the day she would makehim
drop his barriers so they could talk or she would end it. The
latter wasn't what she was hoping for but at the same time she
was tired to talk to a brickwall. So she flew to the station and
entered showing her clearance level to the front desk officer
and would simply proceed in the direction of Mr. Mitchells desk
to talk and she wouldn't take no for an answer.

James sighed as he looked over the paperwork he was assigned, it
was just a lot of the same and it was dull. Then again, if it
wasn't dull it wouldn't be fun, it would be dangerous because
he'd be out in the field. So in that sense it was better that he
was sitting here than being out there.
However, it didn't mean he was allowed to just sit and work on
his own, of course not. Especially not today.
"So, going to see your girlfriend again today?" came a female
voice as Helen, a female snow leopard, leaned on his booth, "or
have you moved the date to another time?"
"I've already told you, Helen," James sighed and didn't bother
to look up at her, "it is just me and a co-worker meeting to
drink coffee. There's nothing else to it. No love, no dating,
nothing, got it?"
"Sure, whatever you say," Helen chuckled, this was one thing
that always ticked the him off, "have fun on your date then,
Mitchell."
"For crying out loud," James muttered as she left him, "just let
me work alone for once."

When she found male's booth she finally stopped walking and on
her way there she came across a female snow leopard. She looked
liked she had fun or was just in a good mood mood perhaps?
Anywho Rouge was here for a chat and wouldn't change her mind
about it. She sat on his desk just to announce her presence in
an unapologizing matter and to show to James he had no choice
this time. "I think it's time we have a little heart to heart.
I'd like to know where we stand and if it's worth keep going or
if I'm just wasting my time."
She knew was causing a possible scene but right now she didn't
care. She wanted to talk to the man behind the badge and knowing
him a direct confrontation would be more efficent than waiting
indefinitely and or using subtlety.

James didn't get time to respond before the Snow leopard started
to laughing hysterically as she managed to overhear what Rouge
told James, "sure, it's not a date."
"Well, you certainly know how to make an entrance, Rouge," James
answered as he glanced at her with his ears down due from
Helen's laughter then he looked back over the papers, "but
please, could you have waited with that until we were at the
café? This will only make the teasing worse."
He quickly packed his things down and got up, ready to leave,
"while the teasing isn't too bad, it's a massive distraction for
me when i work on the station and that annoys me to no end."

She rolled her eyes at him. Despite the fact that now he was
probably just as irritated as she was, the female feline made
things worst. Although she had no intention to apologize in
front of the feline. "Hey snow kitty, why don't you have a post
to scratch?" She said growling under her breath. The bat was
angry, she knew she was wrong but it was a bit late.
She remained quiet until he it was time to leave for the café.
She already made one mistake and didn't want to make another
one.

Helen didn't respond to Rouge and just left for her post, still,
that just made her day.
With her out of the way, James finished up his packing, reached
for his jacket and started to head for the door, "alright, let's
get going before she comes back. There was something you wanted
to know, wasn't there?"

Rouge stood up and walked outside the station. The autumn air
was chilly and she wore a jacket and already had a reservation
for their usual table. The chilly wind blew in their direction
and just added more tension. " yes James, there is. Lately I
feel like I am just part of the job. That I am nothing but a
meaninless coworker. You're not the easiest person to
approach..." She said sitting at the table. The waiter already
came with their usual orders. This was it, they would have a
talk.
"I really want to know where we stand. Because if I am nothing
but apart of the job then I want none of it. I truly want to be
your friend but I don't want towaste either of our time." She
felt sorry for the scene she had caused but at this point it
might reach the point of no return in her mind. She went silent
for a moment and sipped her coffee. She was ready for the worst
outcome but hoped it wouldn't go there.

James sat down across from her, accepted the coffee from the
waiter and listened to Rouge as she started to explain the
situation and what she wanted to know from him. It struck him as
odd, why would she want to know this now? Was it in response to
what he had said after the party went awry? Probably, but he had
just left because he wasn't able to help her and couldn't call
himself her friend... right, there was the answer wasn't it?
This wasn't exactly what he wanted to discuss with her, but he
couldn't really talk around it either.
He took a sip of his coffee as well and a deep breath, then he
finally answered, "i- i don't know how to answer. You're the
coworker closest to me, however, in terms of friends... it's not
a place i like to go for personal reasons."
He took a small break and tried to think figure out what to say
next to not mess this up, "as for how easy i am to approach...
never really thought about. But i can assure you that having
someone i know i can turn to isn't a waste of time. I just don't
know how to return it properly, much as i tried during the
party."

His response left her confused more than it helped. Something
was off and he said it himself it was for personal reasons. She
didn't even know what it even was supposed to mean at this
point. " I wonder, why is it that accepted my offer to go get
coffee together if I am but a coworker. You know I would put my
life into your hands without a second thought. Friends are a
limited ressource in this world, which makes them the more
precious. I am not asking you to tell me about your past, just
to be that person I can count on. Counting you I thought I had
four friends. Four person I could turn to if things went bad.
Someone I can talk to if I need it." She looked down upon the
table and stirred her coffee with a spoon with little
enthusiasm.
In normal circumstances she would gladly drink it with niscottis
and would smile to the hound. But today wasn't "normal". Their
conversation felt heavy and even the smell of her favourite
drink left her a bitter aftertaste."It's not the G.U.N. agent
speaking to you but the woman behind it. Just like I am trying
to reach out for the man behind the badge, I don't want to talk
to the cop. But if you need time or if you just can't do it.
Just can't be off duty I can recommand you a therapist. They are
professionals to whom you can talk to and which you don't need
to be personal or familiar with." She visibly swallowed her
saliva and tried to drown it with coffee. But alas it wouldn't
change anything. It was hard enough as it is.

"I suppose i can try and clarify it a bit more then," James
trailed as he took another sip of his coffee, "i guess you're
closer to that of a partner than a coworker the more i think
about it. I know that you would put your life in my hand, that
is what i have been trained for and what i want to do, protect
others. As much as i want to help you with this, i've promised
myself to keep things as professional as possible."
The suggestion of therapy did sting more than he had thought,
was he really that far off the deep end? No, no he couldn't be
that far gone. He was able to function and do his job and do
what he had wanted to do, right? Right?
"What do you mean with therapy?" he asked her with a raised
eyebrow, "last time i checked i didn't have any real issues.
Although it might have gotten past me without me noticing. As
for the man behind the badge... what would you want with him?"
