An old map and the promise of treasure (open thread)
By: SpaceofWaste Date: September 11, 2018, 9:19 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Locked away in his study. The orange porcupine grabs a batch of
books he hadn't yet read. As he sits at his desk Reck lights the
candles on his desk with a small flame from his index finger.
The porcupine grabs and starts reading the first book. Chapters
and hours pass. Reck eventually finishes the first book. He lets
out a long sigh as a sense of accomplishment and exhaustion
overwhelms him. As he reaches for the second book the porcupine
accidently knocks over the stack of books. "Doesn't that just
figure." Reck chuckles as he stands up from his desk. Reck rubs
his face with the back of his hands. As Reck starts to pick up
the books off the floor. He sees an old folded up paper sticking
out of one of the books. "What's this?" The porcupine says under
his breath grabbing the paper. Sitting back at his desk Reck
unfolds the paper across his desk. The paper has a note along
       with a strange map.
       "Dear Explorer,
This map leads to an item of great magical
value and treasure untold. I spent years of my life trying just
to get a hold of this map. In that time I grew too old to
travel. Now if you've found this it means I have passed and my
estate has sold. Please stranger find this treasure. Complete my
       life's work.

       Your Friend."
The porcupine stares at the map. Tears forming in the corners of
his eyes. He knew what he had to do. Folding back up the map
Reck leaves his study. Walking down the stairs from his
apartment above his place of buisness. Once down stairs he gets
on his computer and types up some flyers. "ADVENTURERS NEEDED
TREASURES UNTOLD FOR MORE INFORMATION STOP BY RECK'S COMPUTER
AND ROBOT REPAIR." Printing off several of these flyers Reck
locks up his shop and walks Mobotropolis. Posting one flyer on
every corner until he runs out. Afterwards the porcupine returns
to his shop. Sitting in the chair behind his register Reck
waits. His chin rested on folded fingers.

Sabine sighed as she walked home from the job center. Another
job had come to an abrupt end due to her temperament. This
wasn't good, she needed the money or she'd be out on the street
and Sebastian would be out of the class. She had to find
something she could do competently and not get kicked from. The
bills were piling up and she was running dangerously low on
funds for them and they were running out of canned food.
As she turned down another street on her way home, she noticed a
flyer hanging on the corner and stopped to read it. She smirked
to herself as she pulled it down. Seemed she was in luck, it
didn't list any requirements off the back... which at least gave
her a chance. She just needed to know what it entailed and how
long it would be so she'd know how to handle Sebastian. Even
then she was a beggar and couldn't be a chooser in regards to
potential employment. She would give it a shot and set off for
       this tech shop.
Reck would eventually hear someone knock on the door. On the
other side stood a large jaguar. She seemed to be well build and
her expression was halfway locked into a scowl, "i got your
       flyer."

Reck, who had been once been sitting up, now had his head
slumped on the table. His ears twitch at the sound of the knock.
Slowly he stands up and makes his way to the door. Speaking as
he unlocks the door. "Sorry about that. I guess I dozed off.
Come in make yourself comfortable. " The porcupine holds open
the door in invitation for the jaguar. Dark circles under his
eyes showing exhaustion. He motions for her to follow as he
walks back towards the counter of the shop. The porcupine washes
his face in a small sink in the back of the shop. Filling a
coffee pot beside the sink with water.
The porcupine starts a coffee machine behind the counter. He
then pulls the chair out from behind the counter. " You can sit
here. It's the only chair in the main store area. If more people
show up we can move upstairs to the living area. So far it seems
to be just you interested." Reck wipes his eyes with the index
finger and thumb of his right hand. "You figure finding
adventurers in Mobotropolis would be easy."
The coffee pot finishes, and the porcupine pours himself a cup.
He adds a few spoonfulls of sugar and creamer and stirs it while
he leans against a wall of the shop. "Would you like a cup?" The
porcupine offers. "So you saw my flyer. What's your name? " Reck
takes a sip of his coffee as he looks at the jaguar. "Do you
have any skills or talents that could be applied while on an
       expidition?"

Sabine didn't seem to mind that he had fallen asleep, it wasn't
long she had been left waiting. So she omited to comment on it
and just waved the apology off.
"I can see that," She said after seeing the dark circles under
Reck's eyes, "something's been keeping you up at night?"
She then followed him in and sat down in the chair, trying to
make herself comfortable now that she was here.
"Well, i would guess they either ignored the flyers or are fed
up with adventure after all that's happened," she guessed based
on the cooment about the lack of adventurers, "some things just
aren't as easy as they seem, are they?"
It was then the coffee finished and the part she had dreaded
       came.
"Sure, since you offered," she said and then leaned forward, "as
for the name, i am Sabine Horten and my qualifications... aren't
exactly many. I am big, strong and determined. Very
temperamental and aggressive. Make of that what you will."

Reck chuckles and shakes his head at Sabine's first question.
"I run my store all day. After work I lock myself in my study,
and read most of the night. If things were easy most people
would be out of jobs." Taking another sip of his coffee Reck
pauses. "I was just hoping the thought of treasure would bring
people in quicker." The porcupine whipes his eyes again. "Rest
sometimes gets ignored to keep up with buisness."
Setting his cup on the counter next to the coffee pot. The
porcupine pours a cup of coffee, and hands it to the jaguar. He
gestures with his hands to the sugar and creamer. "Please, help
yourself, Sabine. " The porcupine scratches his head. "I guess
you could tell by the flyer, but my name is Reck."
Reck laughs at Sabine's honesty. "You're honest, I like that. He
looks at The jaguar directly in the eyes. "Now, I would like to
be your employer for this expidition to the unknown." Sipping
his coffee again. His eye contact breaks just long enough to
raise the cup. "Do you have any weapons training or EMT skills?
I just need to know what kind of situation we're setting our
       selves up for."

Sabine poured herself a cup of coffee and looked to Reck as he
explained a bit about running the store and why he thought the
treasure thing would be a surefire way to get help.
"Hmph, my guess is that they're too busy rebuilding," she
answered and took a sip, "but if it is any consolation prize, i
cam here for that reason. I am in deep right now and let's just
say my mindset can get me in trouble with employers when things
       get sour."
The next question however, was something she could answer with
confidence, "nothing formal, i held up in a cabin when the war
broke out. I've trained myself to use heavy weapons and i
suppose i could bandage a wound if need be. But i am not going
to tell you that we can rely on me to keep us alive. I would
like to ask a question too, how long would estimate we're doing
       this?"

Reck looks to the ground. "Yeah... The war... it ruined a lot
of lives. Took so many. I was lucky to come back to an undamaged
home." Reck's hands start to shake as he switches subjects back.
"The expiditon shouldn't take any more than 3 weeks. It starts
tomorrow." Reck wipes forming tears from his eyes.
Reck takes a long drink finishing off his cup of coffee. "I'm
not relying on you to keep me alive. I have that covered. I just
need to make sure you can come back alive." Reck finds himself
talking with a more serious tone. "This is going to be risky. I
can't promise we aren't going to get hurt."
The porcupine looks to Sabine. "If you don't want the job, I
completely understand." Reck pours himself another cup of
coffee. Flavoring it the same way as his first. "The pay is 2000
and 10% of what ever treasure there might be. The percentage is
negotiable." Reck takes a drink of the coffee and sits the mug
       on the counter.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Sabine just nodded and kept quiet about her situation. There
were some things she didn't want to talk about, this being one
       of them.
"I see," she trailed as he swapped subjects. This wasn't good, 3
weeks... she'd have to make sure Sebastian was cared for so
long, but she couldn't hire someone and what friends he had
probably wouldn't be keen on having him staying with them for 3
weeks in a row. Should she bring him along? No that'd be even
worse... no way he'd be able to handle it. She briefly
considered if she should back out, but she needed the money
badly, for her and her little brother, "i can work with that."
His warning didn't dissuade her, it didn't scare her one bit.
The prince meanwhile just confirmed her need to commit to this
job, "don't think that talks me out of it. I am used to fighting
and getting hurt. Besides, i can't turn down a job like this. As
i said, i need the money. So diving head first into this isn't
something i am against. I will meet up with you tomorrow."
This had sealed the decision on her brother however, she had to
send Sebastian to a friend for 3 weeks. She'd have to say it was
a job that required her being away from home for a while. There
really wasn't any other way about it. Much as it pained her to
       do so.

The porcupine runs his fingers through his quills. "Alright, if
that is your position on it. I wasn't trying to stop you." Reck
pauses with a sigh. "I just didn't want you going in blind.
Speaking of which look over the map before you leave." He pulls
the map out of his pocket.
Reck unfolds the map across the counter. Sitting his coffee mug
on one corner as a weight. The map depicts old trade routes of
Mobian settlements a highlighted path leads from Green Hill to
the Mystic Caves. The path leads out of the caves and to an
unknown point. "I'm not sure how many of these roads actually
still exist. Why does everything on Mobius start at Green Hill."
Reck explains not looking up from the map.
The porcupine scratches his chin. "Tomorrow morning come in with
your supplies ready." Reck looks to Sabine. "If you aren't
here, I'll head out on my own." He points to the note in the
corner of the map. "If there really is a magic artifact there. I
have to get it before someone else does."

       ---------------------------------------------------------
"Respectable," Sabine said as she came over to watch the map as
he explained what he knew, "more than some of the jobs i've
       worked."
She listened carefully and tried to note the road and plan for
the supplies she could bring without compromising everything
else, "don't ask me. I never got into this kind of stuff, hell,
i didn't even care that Green Hill was a starting point for many
things. Either way, sure looks like we got a lot of stuff ahead
       of us."
With that she turned to leave but stopped in the door and looked
back, "trust me, i will be there... but the food might have to
come out of my pay. I hope you understand." Then she went home.
She had overheard the bit about magic, but she had other things
on her mind, she'd ask about it the next day.
Opening the door, she found her little-brother, Sebastian,
sitting by the table and trying to do his homework. He as a
jaguar like her, but he didn't have the same pigment defect as
her and was thus not black. It made it awkward when people saw
them together as they didn't look like siblings. Once she
appeared however, he instantly put the pen down and ran over to
       hug her.
"Hi sis, how did it go?" he asked her innocently with a big
hopeful smile, "did it work out this time?"
Sabine took a deep breath as she could see her brother make the
connection from how his hopeful smile slowly faded, "no... i was
fired again. But there might be hope still."
"Really?" Seb asked her, now curious, "how?"
"I ran into a job on the way home, but it's one that requires me
to be out of town for around three weeks," Sabine said as she
knelt down and ruffled Sebastian's hair to make him feel a bit
more comfortable. Although he didn't seem thrilled by the
       prospect in any way.
"3 weeks?" he asked her in a nervous tone of voice, "but what
       will i do then?"
"I will call your friends and ask if they can't house you for
the time," Sabine said with calm and assuring voice as she
pulled him in for hug, "i wish it was different, but i can't
pass this up. It could help us get back on our feet."
"But... but what if something goes wrong?" Sebastian asked her
concerned, "i don't want to lose you like mom and dad."
"I've told you, they're out there, they got to be," Sabine told
him to try and calm him, "and don't worry about me. I am tough,
       i can handle it. Okay?"
"O- okay," Seb stammered as he sensed she wasn't going to budge,
"i- i will trust you this once, when- when do you leave?"
"Tomorrow morning," Sabine said and stood up, "but for now, i
will make sure we get you settled in for the duration of my job.
So back to homework with you."
Sebastian nodded but he wasn't able to focus on it as he heard
Sabine talk with his friends' parents to find someone that would
have him over for the 3 weeks. As she glanced to him, Sabine
knew that this would be rough on him, but she had little choice
in the matter at this point. She couldn't back down. Once the
matter was settled, they went about their evening and went to
       bed.
Come next morning, Sabine made sure Sebastian was off to school,
then she packed some light camping gear, what food she had left
and then grabbed her LMG along with the remaining ammo she had,
two box magazines of a hundred rounds... she was cutting it
close. After that she headed out and waited outside Reck's door
       and knocked every five minutes.
