"What?" Amy stared at her boss, the museum's curator when he had
just given her an order.
"You heard me, Amy. You're going on that excursion in Mystic
Ruins. That's an order." The man had repeated himself.
"B-But... why? There's so much to be done here-" She was cut off
by him again.
"I'm not going to hear about it. You've lost your spark, child,
it's time you got out of this building and out into the field
for practical archeology or at least a breath of fresh air."
Amy Rose narrowed her eyes. Sure she was a tad depressed from
what had transpired with Sonic but this was ridiculous! She was
working harder than ever, shouldn't her boss be happy? "There's
nothing there! That site has already been explored, documented,
cataloged, and put behind glass here at the museum!" It was a
waste of time! She didn't want to go digging around! He couldn't
do this!
She wasn't doing this!

She was doing this.
Amy stood in the swampy rainforest, dressed in tan shorts that
went passed mid-thigh, a brown midriff-revealing tanktop, and
knee-high hiking boots. She felt ridiculous, why did she wear
this? She looked like some skanky heroine from a video game or
movie.
She couldn't believe this, this was an outrage. "Ugh!" She
grabbed her pack and slung it over her shoulder. Might as well
get this over with. She wasn't to return until she found
something new to bring back for the museum, and since it was
only her here, not only was this a pointless mission, but it
would take forever!
"Hmm... or maybe not." She remembered something she had said to
a certain black and red hedgehog and then pulled out her phone,
dialing his number. "Hey Shadow, how would you like to assist me
in exploring Mystic Ruins? It's guaranteed to be hot, wet, muddy
and will bore you to tears. You game?" She said, her tone
completely deadpanned.

While the G.U.N intelligence division is investigating Eggman's
whereabouts, Shadow is sent to track down the remaining bases
the mad scientist abandoned long ago due to no longer have any
use for them. He began his awfully short journey to Iron Jungle,
a victim of pollution and machinery, once a jungle full of green
pasture and dirt, is now another one of Eggman's base of
operations to house his deadly weapons. Hence the term "Iron
Jungle" Soon as those hardened ruby eyes spotted the dull
architecture, his stomach tightened a knot, This place reminded
him of a traumatizing event, a time when the doctor built those
dreadful machines modeled in his own image.
He HATES coming here, but work has to be done, on the bright
side once this assignment is over, he would never have to look
at this corrupted jungle ever again. The black hedgehog grinder
a rail, it lead into a standing platform that felt larger than
the ones in rail canyon, however it felt so closed in and narrow
at the same time. The inactive Egg pawn and Shadow Androids
reacted among Shadow's presence, they behaved exactly as he
remembered them in the past, they prepared their built in
weapons, firing lasers and heat seeking missiles, trying to
destroy the intruder.
Shadow scoffed and cranked up the speed, engulfing, his body in
a yellowish orange boost aura, breaking the sound barrier, he
planned to finish this assignment quickly, refusing to slow
down. The Egg Pawns are tossed away either in pieces or flung
off somewhere in the distance, His metallic twin brothers put up
a stronger resistance however in the end they fared no better,
they were created with the data of Shadow still having his
limiter rings and wasn't quite as powerful nor fast like he is
today. Shadow dispatched a lot of them either boosting through
their soulless temple, or using a spin attack.
He reached the end of the base, spotting the main cause of
pollution and the source in holding the facility together, a
well timed speed boost should do the trick. He plowed through
the reactor core, triggering a chain of explosives, Shadow
sprinted out of danger and stood outside the room entrance.
Whatever amount of enemies left are of no concern to him, they
will perish along with the base in a matter of time.
Shadow clicked on his communicator to speak with Commander Tower
about his success, "Ive done it Commander, Eggman's weapon
facility is destroyed"
Abraham Tower can clearly here the explosions, pondering why
haven't his agent left the area immediately. "Well what are you
standing around there for? Get out of there before you blow into
chunks!, come back for debriefing" he warned. "Understood"
Shadow zoomed off back to G.U.N headquarters, once there he
approached the Commander and gave him a sulute.
"Excellent work Shadow, we are still tracking down Eggman's
other bases and hopefully his location, for now I don't have any
further assignments for you to do until then, go rest up" he
gave Shadow the clear to take it easy until he is ready to be
deployed. The brooding doppelganger nodded, approaching his
living arrangement, he stepped inside his room and sat on the
bed. Soon his communicator went off and he didn't hesitate to
examine the caller ID: Amy Rose, what could she want? He clicked
a button to answer.
"Hey Shadow, how would you like to assist me in exploring Mystic
Ruins? It's guaranteed to be hot, wet, muddy and will bore you
to tears. You game?"
Shadow didn't expect an invitation from Amy like this, did she
wanted to return the favor from the other day? Most likely the
case. "Depends, what are you looking for?" he replied.

Amy shrugged, despite Shadow not being able to see her. "No
idea. Something the museum doesn't have already on the history
of the Mystic Ruins and the Echidna Clan." She repressed a sigh
and began her treck to the old structures, might as well look
through them and see if she sees anything new. "It could be
fun... maybe. Hey, don't worry about it. You don't have to if
you don't want to. I wouldn't force this on anyone." She said,
running a hand along a wall covered in the old Echidna language
and began to slowly decipher them. 'Hmm... blah blah blah, old
legend, sacred treasure, nothing I haven't read before.'

History or Ruins and the Echidna Clan? Shadow certainly would
been dismissive to Amy's offer, he has better things to do, a
part of him is curious about their origin, especially if they
possessed more knowledge of chaos energy than he does, the
echidnas may even be the original users of chaos, only one way
to find out. "Normally I would've said no, but I'm not doing any
missions right now, I need an excuse to get some exercise, I'm
in" Shadow hung up and dashed all the way over to Amy's location
in seconds.
Shortly after he arrived, he folded his arms, expressing
indifference. "....." he noticed the change in Amy's wardrobe,
to him its a trivial matter to be concerned about, he couldn't
form an opinion if he tried, he isn't into fashion. Nonetheless
he is here to accompany Amy on her quest.

Amy smiled and hung up when Shadow arrived. "Oh, hey, there you
are. Thank you for joining me. It really means a lot." Despite
her depressed state, she was really happy that Shadow was here
when he didn't have to be. It kind of warmed her heart.
Amy stood up from the ground and brushed herself off, and
gestured towards the writing and murals on the wall. "Allow me
to be your guide on the history of the Mystic Ruins. So, long
ago it was built by the clan of the Echidnas, the architectural
designs are identical to the ones on Angel Island where the
Master Emerald is housed and the chaos emeralds were once also
kept before legends say they angered their god the Great Chaos
and he wiped out their civilization, fast forward and this is
what's left of their homes, old stone and faded hieroglyphics."
She looked up at the ceiling, seeing the rougher and less
detailed version of the battle with the Perfect Chaos and the
hedgehog shaped individual. "Now that I see it again. I'd say
it's safe to assume that your creation had a lot of inspiration
from their legends and knowledge of the chaos emeralds." She
pointed up to the picture. "I didn't notice it before but your
shape does bear a close similarity to the mural up there." She
turned and gave him a smile. "I guess you can think of this
place as part of your heritage, something to connect with." She
said.

Shadow uplifted his neck and stared deeply at the hieroglyphics
of Perfect Chaos and the hedgehog individual, If the ebony
mobian didn't remember his creator built an exact replica of the
Master Emerald shrine, invented artificial intelligence that
resembled Chaos, and multiple sighting of fake Chaos illusions
during the war confirming its existence, Amy hypothesis about
his origin would've sound like back wash. Shadow's expression
gradually changed from stoic to shock and confusion, If this is
true then why didn't Gerald tell him about this?
Did he live his whole life believing to have his own identity?
How much did he know about the professor, how many secrets kept
from him? Did anything he possessed rightfully belong to him?
Shadow is feeling shaken on the revelation. "Y-You mean I was
c-created in the image of...S..SOMEONE ELSE!?" he felt
distraught looking at Amy in disbelief. He thought he'd finally
discovered his past, who he is as a person, to honor his
friend's wishes in order to move on with his life, this newfound
knowledge made everything crumble away, he wondered if it was
all for nothing.

Amy turned towards the dark hedgehog, surprised at his reaction
and then thought back over her words. Had she not accused Sonic
of being insensitive? And what was she being now? “I'm sorry. I
just blurted that out without thinking.” She paused. Telling him
to ignore it would be a waste of breath. The pink hedgehog
thought of how to rectify her error. “ I misspoke, I didn't mean
that you were created to be someone else. I meant that... when
Gerald was looking at these murals and legends, he might have
seen a world in desperate need of hope, not a weapon, and that's
what he had in mind, for you to be a beacon of hope to
humanity.” She approached the black hedgehog and placed a hand
on his shoulder. “You don't have to worry about someone trying
to change who you are. You are who you make yourself to be. You
choose your own destiny. And you have.” She smiled softly. “Back
on the ARK, you could have chosen to let the world be destroyed
yet you stopped it. You did. I'd say that you've surpassed
anyone's idea of you. You're just amazing that way.” The last
part made her blush as soon as she said it. 'So what if I'm
embarrassed? I meant it. He will always amaze me.'

The vein popping atmosphere of tension Shadow is experiencing,
subsided upon Amy giving him comfort, sharing her of piece of
wisdom. She reminded the troubled mobian he is created to bring
hope to the world, to serve as a beacon for humanity, he got to
where he is now because he chose to be what ever person he
wanted to be, without allowing anyone to control his destiny.
Shadow's muscles loosened their stiffness, his mind becoming
more clear once again.
He gazed at Amy in gratitude for the hammer girl, scarlet eyes
regaining their shine indicating a sign of focus and relief, she
has done it again. "You're right, I chose my own path for
myself.." he turned away from Amy, once again staring at the
hieroglyphics. "Still...its crazy to believe my origin connects
to all of this, The Professor really loved his research.." he
made the right choice coming to Mystic Runs, if he didn't he
never would've discovered more of his backstory.

She was glad that she had been able to correct her error without
the usual quick dismissal that leads to the haunting dwelling
upon them until you go mad. Amy smiled and nodded. “Yeah, I find
it exciting whenever I see the past and present connect. I
wonder if the professor was also a history buff.” She mused then
looked around the chamber at the options of which doorway to
pick first. She opened her backpack and pulled out her torch
then flicked it on. “Alright. Let's look around and see if
anything stands out or looks out of place.”
She pulled out a map and handed it to Shadow. “Here is a layout
sketch that was made of the ruins, maybe we'll find something
that wasn't drawn. I'll be honest, I have my doubts but hey,
we'll never know standing here,” she said, tapping a passage on
the map. “Let's take that one first.” She pointed in the right
direction and began walking.

"Its possible the professor is an archaeologist" the evidence
aboard the ARK suggest frequent trips to Angel Island, making
his other occupation all the more likely. Shadow is handed a map
that contains a detailed sketch of the ruins the pair is about
to explore, they didn't take no more than a few seconds to
decide on the entryway, the right doorway. Sonc's darker twin
allowed Amy to take the lead, she knows about this place more
than he does, and she is carrying their only field of vision.
Shadow didn't utter a word once they entered inside, he focused
his instincts to look out for potential booby traps or other
explorers who could be an obstacle on their quest. It is also a
good time to ponder Amy's state of mind, she haven't said a word
about Sonic after he joined her on a history hunt, a contrast
from the fan girl he knew, did she take his advice to heart?
