       A Failed Examination [Central Park]
   DIR By: Hachi
       Date: April 14, 2018, 1:07 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The overcast skies were certainly fitting for the current mood,
as Hachi had plopped herself down on a park bench, looked at a
piece of paper she held, and sighed heavily. In high hopes of
applying for the Resistance, she had gone to get a medical
examination to prove that she was fit as a fiddle to fight. She
was embarrassed-- no. Disappointed in herself. She had gone
through all of that work only to have forgotten one, tiny
detail: Her Claustrophobia. The one thing that failed her
medical examination. That paper was physical proof of her own
       failure.
"It's far too risky for you to fight!"
"It's selfish if you get accepted and lie to them about your
condition-- in the wrong situation, you could risk your own
life, as well as the lives of the Mobians more capable of taking
       care of us!"
The Doctor's harsh words caused her to grind her teeth in
frustration... he was right, though. She let out a disgruntled
groan and crumpled up the paper, tossing it into a nearby
trashcan. She missed, and fell way short. With another heavy
sigh, she got up to grab it and throw it away properly.

[i] Her father always prided himself on being firm but fair, in
both his personal life and his professional, and Sonya had never
found any reason to find fault with the way he conducted
himself, until now. Now normally the male duck made it very
clear that while they was on duty, their father daughter
relationship didn’t exsist which initaly stung but
she’d come to understand overtime that it was better not
to let the personal into the professional, it clouded judgement
well that’s what she was often told. However this time
around she felt justified by letting her emotions take control.
It had taken an almost unnecessary amount of nagging for her to
be able to observe their newest resistance applicant for her
medical exam. And while by no means the perfect candidate it was
clear that the girl held nothing but potential, and as stubborn
and stuck in his ways as he was, she knew that her father was
seeing it in the girl to, knowing him better than most his
neutral expression throughout her exam, said more than words
       would.
So witnessing him not only talk down to the female, but also
tell her very bluntly that the reason her medical exam was
failing was because of Clusterphobia of all things! she was glad
that the girl let loose and gave him a piece of her mind before
she took her turn. Waiting until the female had stormed out,
door slamming, the fennec was on the case immediately, her tone
without a trace of its usual banter filled affection for the
       male.
“How dare you! you give me hell and back constantly about
how i need to remain professional yet fair when making any
medical assessment! TELL ME WHAT PART OF THAT WAS FAIR ON
       HER?!”
“Enough Sonya! that girl may think she can do it all but
she’s overestimating herself! i’m helping her more
than i’m doing harm! and as for you .. YOU THINK YOU CAN
GO RASING YOUR VOICE AT ME WHEN YOU’VE STILL GOT A LONG
WAY TO GO BEFORE YOU WILL EVER BE CONSIDERED ANYTHINHG BEYOND A
       GLORIFIED APPRENTICE!”
Her defensive outburst replaced in the moment by nothing more
than a defiant cold stare, Sonya forced herself to remain calm,
her gaze not straying from his own.
“.. I am more than a glorified apprentice! even if you
don’t see it! you’ve got a lot of nerve telling that
girl that Clusterphobia is a valid reason that she can’t
be on active duty! I DO IT EVERYDAY.”
“.. And you don’t give a damn about what your
reckless actions do to your mother, your brothers and sister, me
.. you’ve always been so damn stubborn Sonya! but at least
with you I know you know what your getting yourself in for ..
       that recruit-“
“That was not your call Doctor Quack, excuse me.”
Her words as monotone as they’d ever been with him, seeing
the hurt that flashed in his blue orbs even if for only a
second, made her feel a thousand times worse. She didn’t
have time to think about that now though, right now she had
       someone to find.
       ___
She wasn’t exactly sure that the female in question even
opted to head to the park, but with it being near by, she figured
it was worth a try, after all she’d come here more than
often in the past when things in both her professional and
personal life felt like they was getting to much.
Being the perceptive type, it wasn’t long before Sonya
managed to locate whom she intended, and watching her dejectedly
launch what was no doubt her medical examination report for the
bin, and miss, she took her cue and wandered over, picking it up
moments before she did, to toss it in the bin for her.
Feeling a lot less confident than she sounded after her and her
dads screaming match, she spoke her voice friendly yet also
       gentle.
       “He’s wrong you know.”

Hachi was taken back a bit by someone picking up the paper just
before she did. Glancing up she saw a somewhat familiar face-- a
girl from the hospital. Uniform and all.
       “He’s wrong you know.”
The wolf adjusted her bangs a bit, and found her face turning
red. This young woman had definitely overheard her outburst to
the doctor... how embarrassing. She carefully adjusted her
posture and shook her head, managing to crack a light smile.
"No, I--" she paused for a moment, trying to think. "He wasn't
entirely wrong... with the state the city's in, it's... foolish.
Mobotropolis needs the best of the best, right? I'm not quite
there." She managed to let out a lighthearted laugh. "Growing up
my dad warned me that they wouldn't take in a Freedom Fighter
that bad-mouthed others! He warned me to be on my best behavior
otherwise I wouldn't get accepted if I applied..."
Hachi looked away, trying to hide her shame and tears from the
girl. "I never would have dreamed this would hold me back...
h-he's not entirely wrong. I'm a bit of a hazard." She began to
find herself getting choked up, but took in a deep breath and
attempted to calm down. "I'm sorry... I've wanted to be a
Freedom Fighter for a long time. I'm just not sure where to go
from here." She glanced back at the girl, wiping tears from her
eyes. "Didn't mean to get emotional like that."

[i] Ears half lowering, the longer she listened to the half
breed, she waited until the female was finished, before saying
       her own piece.
"What Motropilis needs are individuals who are ready and
willing to do their part for what is right, and i'm going to be
honest with you, from what i saw of you today physically and
mentally the doctor wasn't wrong, your're not there yet, but let
me tell you exactly what his mistake was, counting you out
       completely, you've got moxie Hachi."
Seeing that the girl was only keeping it together by a thread,
Sonya felt greatly for her. After all Medic for the Freedom
Fighters or not there was STILL stigma associated with her after
all these years. There was still mobians that time and time
again questioned her capability to be a Freedom Fighter, and
there had been many an implication that if it hadn't been for
her connections with Sally and the royal family, she wouldn't be
where she is today. And Sonya resented those speculations
deeply, it was true that she'd grown up alongside the Princess,
but that had nothing to do with where she was now. She'd never
been the type to not earn her own way, and the fact that was
constantly having to prove herself to everyone secretly wore her
down, even at the best of times. She long past letting the
opinions of the irreverent get to her though, and if anything
only grew stronger from the negativity she received. It went
without saying that she was far from the publics favorite hero,
but that didn't matter to her, she hadn't joined the Freedom
Fighters for the fame or the glory, she'd joined the Freedom
Fighters to help millions of mobians worldwide and make a
difference, and she was going to keep doing that, regardless of
       those who didn't approve.
Instinctively the female found herself resting a hand
comfortingly on the half breeds shoulder. Try as she might to
hide her tears, Sonya knew what emotional breakage looked like.
"Hey .. let me tell you a secret, only the best mobians are."
"Being a hazard isn't necessarily a bad thing, you just need to
put it into the context that i do, a hazard- means your're
unpredictable, headstrong, and most importantly not someone to
       underestimate in a hurry."
Producing a soft tissue, from the pocket of her doctors coat,
she offered it towards the female, a friendly smile crossing her
       muzzle.
"Please don't apologize for getting emotional, your're only
mobian .. and as for where you go from here, the choice is yours
but, you know Hachi the first step in being a hero is knowing
when to put aside personal pride, so an apology would be the
       best place to start.."

Hachi gratefully accepted the tissue from the young woman and
managed to continue smiling. She felt significantly better after
this young woman's speech-- albeit a bit hesitant on going back
to that doctor and apologizing. She was still a bit shaken up
from the ordeal. Not opposed, of course, but not ready just yet.
"You're right," Hachi sighed, "I was rude-- it's only right.
Tomorrow, once my mind is cleared, I'll go apologize to him. He
was only doing his job, after all... and so are you."
Hachi bit the inside of her cheek as she thought momentarily
about how she blew up at the doctor. Although it wasn't unlike
her to be over-the-top when it involves her dream of becoming a
Freedom Fighter, it was unlike her to disrespect someone of
authority... someone she should respect significantly more. She
bowed her head slightly, and let out a sigh.
Suddenly she perked back up a bit, and let out a light laugh,
"I do appreciate the compliment, though! Me, being a hazard...
definitely not a word someone's ever refereed to me as in a
positive way. It's a good way to look at... well, me."
Hachi smiled at the young fox and looked into her eyes directly.
"Thank you for looking out for me. You went out of your way to
make sure I was okay... I appreciate that. I'd still feel like I
was in a slump if you didn't show up." She stood proud, taking
in a deep breath. "I won't let this slow me down. I'm going to
improve myself-- I will become a Freedom Fighter one way or
       another!"
She held out her hand, but suddenly hesitated. "Oh, uh... I know
you know my name already, but-- I'd like to properly introduce
myself. I'm Hachi." She held her hand out again, but once again
hesitated. "Oh-- I should probably warn you... my hands are cold
and feel like plastic. Freaks some mobians out." She, for a
third time, held her hand out, and laughed awkwardly again.
       "I don't think I caught your name."

[i] Her own smile intensifying from the other females own, she
was glad to see that her speech provided the necessary
reassurance she'd so clearly needed. Knowing that she was
probably going to be reluctant to get face to face, with Doctor
Quack anytime soon, she respectfully gave a small nod in
acknowledgement, of her decision to pause her apology until she
was in better frame of mind. In her shoes Sonya would of done
exactly the same thing, Horatio [Dr Quacks first name. : ) ]
was a lot to handle, even for her and she lived with him for
goodness sake. Hearing her comment about her doing her only her
job, gave the fennec a reason to give another small smile, and
shake her head. While her profession was extremely important to
her, she didn't prioritize it the way her dad did, yes she was a
Medic but that didn't take away from the fact that it wasn't
easy for her to just keep her professionalism where it nee den
be. While very professional when it was called for, unlike
Horatio she knew when to just be Sonya, not a Medic, not a Hero,
just a girl from Motropilis that came from humble beginnings and
just cared about people because she could.
"Consider this an off the record moment Hachi, while it's true
that is my job to care about you, i didn't just come to check on
you because i had to, i mean it."
Her smile never faltering, that oh to familiar warmth spread
through her chest, upon receiving the thanks she gave. This was
why she went out of her way to do what she was always scalded
for doing. Despite how her father lectured, it wasn't as simple
for her to just turn off her emotions towards those she met
while on the job. Him on the other hand.. annoyance crept at the
edges of her thoughts, knowing that while she was here making
sure that Hachi hadn't come anywhere near close to having an
emotional breakdown because of his bluntness and insensitivity,
he likely hadn't given her a second thought since she'd left the
hospital earlier. It was that kind of behavior that infuriated
her about him. Yes she knew that they was professionals that
needed to draw a reasonable line somewhere, otherwise things got
complicated, but they weren't supposed to be cruel.
"No need to thank me Hachi, you pretty much had the situation
handled yourself, you just needed a positive perspective to help
you get back on track, remember this next time you feel like
       your're going to loose it.”
“You can't control how you feel about a situation when it
happens, but you can take control by how you react to it and
centre your emotions in a controlled way."
Seeing the female re motivated and openly determined, Sonya knew
       she'd done the right.
Not hesitating in the slightest, Sonya gripped the females hand
firmly in her own, for a firm handshake whilst speaking with
       cheerful reassurance.
"Don't worry, there's not a lot that can phrase me as far
unusual body parts go, i've shaken hands or shall i say .. i've
shaken a hook with a mobian before, so cold and plastic is a
       breeze!"
Her heroic side coming out, her smile shifted into a friendly
       smirk, prior to her reveal.
"It's nice to meet you Hachi, i'm Doctor Heart, but my friends
call me Sonya, Freedom Fighter Field Medic. And take this on
board from an active member of the Resistance, if you keep up
your positive, determined, attitude will be working together in
       no time!"

       "A hook?"
Hachi attempted not to gawk at the statement, but sputtered and
covered her mouth when Sonya had mentioned it.
"With modern technology it's just hard to imagine someone would
opt for a hook over a robotic hand!" Hachi couldn't help but
chuckle a little at the thought.
"I'm sorry-- that's not something I should laugh over! Losing
your own flesh and blood... it's awful, but my gosh...!"
As Hachi shook hands with Sonya, her smile widened from
laughing. This woman was wise beyond her years!
"You just needed a positive perspective to help you get back on
track, remember this next time you feel like your're going to
       loose it.”
Those words seemed to repeat over and over in her head, as if
her mind gripped onto them for dear life. Hachi took a deep
breath, keeping those words close in connection with her. She
wondered if she had heard something similar before... perhaps
from her father? Taking a good look at Sonya, there was
something about her personality that did remind her of her own
       Father.
After Hachi took her deep breath, she relaxed again, and spoke.
"It's wonderful to meet you, Dr. Heart," Hachi bowed her head
politely as the grip between them loosened.
"I know we just met, but is it alright if I call you Sonya?"
A faint blush came to Hachi's cheeks as she gave an awkward
smile. Although she wouldn't admit it openly, Sonya seemed very
much like someone Hachi could easily call a friend. Perhaps,
just asking for permission to refer to her by name was enough
for her to catch onto that.

[i] Composed as she tried to remain, seeing the half breed
collapse into giggles, caused a domino effect on her. It
couldn’t be helped, she was right in an age full of high
powered technology, she herself wondered how on earth she was
still meeting individuals that preferred more old fashioned
methods of comfort, putting the sentence in lighter terms.
“You’d be surprised, I’ve met plenty of
patients that aren’t preferable to change so we
accommodate to the best of ability, don’t be sorry as
awful as it sounds and is when brought up in such a casual
context like this it almost sounds like I’m about someone
fictional or completely made up, after all hardly anyone roams
round with hooks replacements for hands nowadays!”
Now feeling more content than ever that she seemed to have
brought the previously teary female well and truly out of her
shell, the feeling gave her current grin a great deal of weight.
Blinking at her owlishly, Sonya barely managed to hide her
surprise, this girl was very mindful of her mannerisms, she
liked that. Or maybe it the mesh of their similar personalities
.. she was the type of fennec to bond with the like minded after
       all.
“Of course you can me Sonya, all my friends do.”
Winking at her, to show her that her subtle ask was received.
The sudden ‘BLEEP BLEEP’ of her work pager, cut into
their conversation sharp and sudden, Sonya couldn’t stop
the look of discomfort from the sound that flashed briefly
across her features. Letting out an apologetic titter, she
spoke. "Forgive me for reassuring and running Hachi but duty
       calls.”
       ___
       The next day
“I can’t believe I let you talk me into giving that
arrogant girl the time of day after yesterday! I don’t
know what you hope to achieve from this Sonya but I can tell you
right now that your belief in her is misguided I mean
you’ve been telling me all morning that I’m wrong
and fighting her corner and yet here we almost into the
afternoon and she is no where to be seen, says a lot
       doesn’t it?”
Her expression remaining calm and collected, Sonya tapped the
edge of her pen lightly against her clipboard, she fought off
the urge to tell her sceptical father exactly where to shove it.
Although she knew that in many ways that he was right
she’d known Hachi less than twenty four hours they had one
conversation a decent conversation sure but did that mean that
the hybrid would keep her word and come through to apologise
like Sonya had tried to convince her to absolutely not and with
Doctor Quack getting antsy things weren’t looking great

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Just a few blocks away, Hachi found herself walking as quick as
her legs could carry her to the Hospital. After her encounter
with Sonya yesterday, she knew the right thing was to swallow
all of her pride and apologize to that Doctor... but every time
she remembered the choice words she said to him, her gut
wrenched. Not to mention she was running behind on the time!
Although normally punctual, today wasn't the case. She woke up
to find she had forgotten to set her alarm entirely, putting her
       around 45 minutes behind schedule.
"I'm surprised I managed to get this far in this amount of
time," Hachi thought to herself, "If I pick up the pace I should
be able to make it there right on time!"
With that, Hachi decided to attempt to jog the remainder of the
way there, and she felt pathetic. The weight of her limbs made
it such a struggle to speed up! She had to keep going though...
after all, what kind of Freedom Fighter would she be if she
couldn't keep up with everyone? No! She shook her head, trying
not to think about that. Hachi knew her set of skills would be
valuable for one thing or another-- not all the Freedom Fighters
could keep up with Sonic, so why should she have to?
"Almost there--" She thought, slowing down as she approached the
hospital. She made it on time, with a few moments to spare! She
quietly swore something about her alarm being useless, and in a
nearby window attempted to fix her hair a bit before going in.
After all-- she can't just walk in and apologize looking like a
hot mess! With a nod of approval and a deep breath, Hachi walked
up to the doors with a confident smile on her face... At the
       doors, however, she stopped.
"What's the point of apologizing? You still failed." Hachi's
brow furrowed as these usual negative thoughts filled her mind.
"A simple apology isn't going to make you a Freedom Fighter.
He's not just going to pass you because you feel bad about
yelling at him. Just turn around and go home. You can go to any
other Doctor in the city-- it doesn't need to be him!"
Hachi felt her hand drift away from the handle of the door.
Hesitating, she looked up at the hospital... It was true.
Apologizing wasn't going to make her a Freedom Fighter. It
wasn't going to change the examination results. There really
wasn't any point in being here. There were tons of other Doctors
in the city-- nicer ones that would likely pass her regardless
of her flaws. Hachi closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"You just needed a positive perspective to help you get back on
       track."
Sonya was the entire reason she was here today... remembering
the Fox's wise words from the day prior, Hachi quickly pulled
open the doors and entered the hospital. Without Sonya's advice,
she knew she'd likely still be sulking about the results of the
examination. So what if she failed this one time? She didn't
need to see another Doctor... he was strict for a reason! In
fact-- it's probably better that he was strict with her! She
didn't want an easy way out... Hachi had confidence that
eventually she'd be able to prove herself-- even if that means
it will be a little while longer before she does.
"I know being here won't change what happened yesterday," she
thought, as she approached the front desk, "But I need to earn
my right to become a Freedom Fighter. I don't want to become one
just because I apologized to someone. I still need to apologize
for my behavior, but I'll be back every month if I have to. I'll
keep improving myself until I can pass!"
With one final breath, and a relaxed smile on her face, Hachi
faced the secretary behind the counter and spoke:
"Hello there! I have an appointment with Dr. Hart."

[i]“Ah Miss Hachi.. Doctor Heart is expecting you, take a
seat please.” A subtle nod towards the plastic chairs in
the waiting area later, and the receptionists focus was back to
typing swiftly, her gaze locked intently on her computer screen.
       Meanwhile.
She heard her the minute she set foot in the hospital, and
judging from her adopted fathers openly begrudging expression
he’d clocked on to. Masking her triumphant expression, the
blondes large fluffy ears flickered at each of Hachis words,
pride blooming inside her Doctor Quack didn’t even get a
chance to vocalise his scepticism on the mixed breeds arrival
before she was out of the room, and striding her way purposely
through the hospital corridors her small heels clicking with
each step. She wasn’t the type of person to take delight
in the set backs of others, but seeing how set Doctor Quack was
on his pre set opinion of Hachi based on the reaction that HE
had provoked she simply couldn’t allow him to write her
off without Hachi at least having a fair chance to portray
       herself in a better light.
While her apologising probably wasn’t going to change the
ducks verdict on her original medical examination generally
once his mind was made up because of his stubbornness Quack
wasn’t often swayed, if she had judged Hachis character
right and more often than not her observation skills were up to
scratch then the very fact that she came back today meant that
Hachi while hopeful was also prepared for the more realistic
outcome, which was probably going to be hurtful and raw, but she
was ready for that. In a way giving her the advice that she did
yesterday was Sonyas own way of secretly testing the aspiring
freedom fighter, after all out of all the many aspects that
contributed to being a good hero putting pride aside and
apologising for the sake of peace not because it’s wanted
but needed is a massive maturity sign, and in their line of work
being able to keep a level head in the face of conflict mattered
much more than anyone would expect. Unknowingly to her she was
proving the best doctor in Mobius wrong in more ways than one.
And it was for those reasons that when she strode towards her
friend, Sonya wore a smile that stretched dazzlingly across her
white muzzle. “Hachi! glad to see that you made it.”
