The Mundane Life Of A Secret Wizard.
By: SpaceofWaste Date: April 13, 2018, 4:39 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Reck, an orange brown porcupine, stands out of bed to start his
day. He wipes the grime from his face as he opens his Yellow
eyes. Letting out a yawn, Reck teleports himself from his bed to
the coffee pot. He prepared the pot the night before. He just
had to push the button to start the morning brew. Teleporting
back to his room he gathers the days clothes and gets dressed.
He walks down the stairs from his home.
At the bottom of the stairs, his store. His life's work. A
Computer and Robotparts and repair store on the outskirts of
Mobotropolis. Reck walks to the counter and counts out the til.
After the til is prepped he walks the isles of the store.
Checking and cleaning the shelves. After he cleans the store he
walks back to the stairs. Once out of sight of the windows
lining the front of his store. Reck teleports to the coffee pot.
He pours a cup. After adding sugar and cream Reck walks back
       down the stairs.

Reck checks his watch. Five minutes to 10. "Close enough."
Reck says to himself. Turning on the open sign in his window and
unlocking the front door. He then walks behind the counter.
Situating himself into his chair behind the register. He reaches
under the counter and pulls out a small red book.
Reck takes a sip from his coffee and opens the book. Waiting for
the first customer of the day.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
A young vixen entered the shop. At first sight, she seemed lost
and out of place in an electronic store. She wore plain clothes
but had a raven on her shoulder. The shy young maiden appeared
to be more than meets the eye for she carried a voluminous tome
on her shoulder bag that wasn't closed properly and she seemed
to have no idea what to do in the store. Her raven scanned the
surroundings with a hint of intelligence in its eyes while its
mistress had a look of innocence in hers. She slid her frail
finger across the shelf while whispering something to the bird
on her shoulder. The two really seemed to have a conversation
going until both looked at each other in confusion.
''Pardon me, kind sir, it appears that we must inquire about
your knowledge about the world of modern technologies for I lack
any expertise in those fields and I shan't request anyone else.
Your services might just do it, so please help my mistress here
for she wants to open shop and was suggested to have a computer
to keep track of her things and your civilisation does not trade
anymore so we also need a payment machine or whatever the means.
Would you kindly help us?'' said the raven on Valentine's
shoulder. He did not only look intelligent but it could also
talk like a 50 years old man with a British accent.
Valentine looked surprised and did not know how to react to her
familiar speaking on her behalf to the shopkeeper and tried to
stop him by covering his beak but without success. She was
nervous and did not know what to do, Poe had already spoken to
him. She grimaced and rubbed her left arm nervously and tried to
come up with an excuse as to why she had a raven with the voice
of a middle-aged man with a British accent.''Please, pardon my
rudeness. I couldn't help but use my ventriloquist skills to
train them on my way here but aside of that I am to set shop
very soon and I would very need your help very much if you see
no problem in helping a fellow villager and soon shopkeeper.''
She tried to sound convincing but soon after she tried to
justify herself her familiar would speak again.
''Nonsense child, do not come up with excuses and filthy lies.
Now is not the time for that bloody childish behaviour and let
the gentleman help you with your shop or at least the newest
electrical technologies. I may be a familiar but I can't help
with your current modern problems. Now children, talk. I did not
accept to follow you in this pointless quest of yours to
socialize on your behalf.'' Said the raven again before emitting
a loud cry and groomed his feathers on her shoulder as if he
tried to pass himself for a more mundane raven. A little too
late he had already blown their cover and they were looking and
sounding too suspicious to try to feign being mundane people.
Valentine giggled nervously and felt more and more embarrassed.
''Hehe...Thank you, Poe... I can explain, did you know that
ravens are adept at aggressive mimicry? Yes, they can imitate
voices and sounds despite this one sounding like...an old man.
Well...I need help with my shop.'' She spoke with the sweetest
voice with her face gaining a faint crimson hue. Socializing was
her forté but she had to try anyway. Like her familiar said it
       was her problem not his.

Reck let's out an awkward laugh. "You don't have to hide your
magic from me. I've sensed it since you walked in." He sets down
his book. Pulling a tablet out from under the cabinet Reck walks
his way around the counter and out towards the duo on the sales
floor. "You're raven it's a familiar. I'm not too well
researched, but I've heard of them before." Reck now meeting
them on the floor. "The barter system has been out for a while.
I'm sure I can help you find what you are looking for. My name
is Reck and I run this small shop."
Reck standing before Valentine and Poe." You're familiar he
mentioned needing a computer for sales and inventory. Do you
just want something simple, or something that does all the work
for you?" He pauses a second to think.
"Do you want just a standard cash register? I don't keep them in
stock but I can order one." Reck scratches the back of his head.
"Or if you want I can get you something with a POS. You don't
need a computer with the best graphics card or hard drive. So I
could probably get you out of here with the set up and software
fairly cheap." He looks around the aisles thinking about the
       best for the job.
After a short bit of looking around Reck let's out a small gasp.
"I think I might have just the thing." He walks a couple aisles
over. "Come this way please." Reck unlocks a case in the middle
of the aisle. " I mean this might not be at all what you're
looking for, but tablet computers are convenient for being able
to walk around your shop and with the proper software you can
let people pay anywhere in the store of they are paying card."
Reck normally uncomfortable around people. Completely
comfortable when talking sales confident in his words. "If
they're paying cash you will still need a til." Reck pulls a
tablet and a tablet credit card scanner from the case. " These
are great for quick sales. And the scanner comes with a POS app
to install so you don't have to pay for extra software and
special equipment." Reck now in full sales pitch mode. "If you
are running a small business, these are great. I use a tablet
for my sales and inventory." Reck rubs his chin in thought.
"Although the inventory app doesn't keep track of your sales for
you. You have to manually take off individual items to keep it
proper. I write down everything I sell and take them out of
inventory at the end of my day."

Poe sighed as he saw the expression of confusion in Valentine's
face. The Porcupine seems to know his job and field of expertise
but he didn't put it in terms his mistress could comprehend.
Although something troubled the bird, even more, their new
''friend'' was indeed a practitioner of the craft which was very
unusual around the more modern agglomerations.
But he did seem to have the situation under control with his
expertise. Valentine on her side had no idea what he was talking
about but starred at him and nodded once in a while to
acknowledge him despite having no clue of all this modern
jargon. She then raised an index and placed it on the
Porcupine's mouth. ''Please stop... You lost me a few minutes
ago and I have no idea of what you're talking about. I've only
recently joined this civilisation and used to live in the
northern forests. Right now your jargon sounds like gibberish to
me and I am very confused as to what you're trying to sell me.''
She said staring at him directly in the eyes. Her icy blue eyes
piercing through his in hope to recognize his body language to
find clues but it was probably the wrong course of action but
given her origins or situation it was the only she knew how to
       proceed.
''This is a very pathetic display I am witnessing. A modern
wizard and a primitive witch fails to communicate in the most
simple terms. Ahhhh the language barrier is amusing to me
especially in these circumstances, you should both try a common
ground. You spiky rodent use terms that the clueless vixen might
understand or we'll be here for a while and I am not in the mood
to observe this display, not now not ever, nevermore. Or I have
an idea, use your magic! you both are practitioners of the
craft, aren't you? Use it you might both learn from each other
as well.'' The familiar was impatient with his mistress,
especially when he was hungry and that she had forgotten to feed
him and was again lost in the modern world.

Reck shivers at the stare of Valentine. "Forgive me. I
sometimes get really caught up in my work." Reck rubs his arm
nervously. "I'm not sure how to simplify. Poe you said something
about using magic to communicate. What did you mean?" He looks
at the raven pearched on Valentine's shoulder. Reck normally
would be quiet in a situation like this, but something about
Valentine and Poe also being magic just comforts him.

Reck smiles to brighten the mood. "If there's a spell or
incantation we could use I could probably find it in my study
upstairs." Reck looks around the empty store. "I would have to
close the store for a little bit so we could go look. I've got a
feeling I won't miss any business." He let's out a small sigh.
"Not that there's much business these days." Reck looks at the
staircase to his apartment at the back of the store. "My study
is upstairs. I have a bunch of spell books and books of the
arcane." He chuckles. "Some people would say I collect them, but
collectors don't normally study their collection."
Reck walks over to the front door and turns off the open sign,
and puts a "Will return in 30 minutes" sign on the door. Locking
the door he leads the duo up the stairs. "Pardon my mess." Reck
walks the duo to a door at the end of the hallway. Opening the
door Reck reveals his study. A large room walled with full book
cases. In the center of the room a table with a few books
stacked over it. Open books stacked in the middle. Half melted
candles sit on the back corner of the desk. "My study, the room
in this building I feel the most at home. I'm sure I have at
least one book with a spell to transfer knowledge on a subject."
He looks to Valentine and Poe. "Would you two like anything to
eat, maybe some tea?" Reck walks to a book case in the back
corner of the room. "Our best bet for a spell would be in a book
on this shelf." Using his magic he sorts the books on the desk
back into their proper places as he pulls a few books down off
the shelf. "I try to keep everything in order."

''You should see her hut on the verge of the forest, there's no
floor. Only dirt mind you. Also, your study is dusty at best.
Nothing a little cleaning can't fix. But instead of looking for
a spell to transfer knowledge from one mind to another you
should really clean that room. Val seems to be organised with
her components compare to your collection.'' Said the raven to
the porcupine which didn't help Val's embarrassment at the
moment. She was trying to seek help while her familiar wanted to
be helpful again, but when it came to socializing he wasn't the
       most pleasant individual.
''Poe...please behave at least this porcupine is trying to help
me, unlike a certain someone I know.''She said to her familiar
who ruffled his feathers in anger as a reaction to his
mistress's last remark. She was right and he knew it but he was
too full of himself to give her the credit and shouted at her
with a croaky voice something that seemed unintelligible and
aggressive in what seemed to be a primal form of language. It
had some guttural consonance and pierced the air like a curse
would a soul. Despite this little ''confrontation'' Val picked
up her book of shadows and held it in her left hand and waved
her right one over it. ''Primal deities, I call forth upon thee,
grant us the language of ancient past. I conjure thee into doing
my bidding. Come at once and grant her the word, primal and
universal. Grant us wisdom and knowledge, us conjurers speak
your tongue and let none hear us.''She chanted while the pages
of the book of shadows flicked violently and the wind rose
inside the study throwing the books around in a thundering roar.
While manifesting her magic even the raven looked weary to his
mistress using her magic in such circumstances.
(in game terms: The user is allowed to communicate freely with a
designed target without having to deal with a language barrier.
The effects go both ways and are mutual.)

Reck let's out a sigh. His patience on thin ice not used to
having company. "Poe, I know you mean well, but you just keep
quiet the rest of this visit, ok?" Reck's head rested in the
palm of his left hand. He looks through his fingers at the books
sprawled across the floor. "I'm glad you waited until you were
up here to use that spell." Using his magic he lifts the books
off the floor and stacks them on his desk. Knowing he will sort
them later. "So, in these areas of modern culture. You know not
to use magic near the non magic. That's good."
Reck walks over to Valentine. "So we can just understand each
other now. You're going to have to teach me that one." Thinking
to himself how useful that skill could come in handy. Reck
laughs. "It's been a long while since I've even met another
magic user. I don't recognize your magic style. Is it regional?"
He looks around his study making sure that he got all the books
off the floor in to stacks. "Those winds really made a mess of
my study. I've never felt powers so strong that weren't
concentrated into some form of magical attack." A few beads of
       sweat run off Reck's brow.
"Well since we can understand each other now. How about we go
back downstairs, and get you two ready to start your business?"
Reck leads the duo out of his study and closes the door behind
them. Walking them down the same hallway and down the stairs.
Once back in the shop he walks over to the door and turns back
on the open sign and unlocks the door. "Ok, back to business."
Reck smiles walks them to the computers he believes will be best
for her needs. "These computers aren't top of the line but they
do double as cash registers. I don't figure you will need a
tablet after getting to know you. Just something that does it
all." The computers sitting in this section all have tils in the
tower and item scanners beside them on the display. "These are
what most retail chains are switching over to. One would do a
small business plenty, but the catch is they are pricey. Don't
let that discourage you though. My store offers payment plans."
Reck laughs his salesman side showing again.

Val offered her hand to walk down the stairs along with him and
tried to listen to him again and this time could understand him.
It was true that her magic was different than the wizard's and
that she had made a mess out of his study. The wizard was a
different fellow, as for once someone told Poe to be quiet for
he was rude and unpleasant.''I will have to ask you to speak
slowly because it's not because we speak the same language that
your speed is not difficult to follow. As for my magic, it's a
very old form of magic my family transmitted it through
generations of witches and sorcerers. Sometimes even Warlocks
are born but that's trivial really.'' She looked around the shop
and the material, it became easier to recognize the items the
       porcupine was talking about.
''I am willing to teach you a few magical secrets if you want,
also in terms of payments, I will have to open shop first. Do
you think the local population will like having a Botanical shop
for the mundanes and a magic shop for the actual practitioner of
the craft? If yes then I'll save you the best potions and spells
you'll need!'' She had recovered her enthusiasm and felt like
she might have found a kindred soul in this strange modern
world. One that didn't mind telling Poe to be silent when he
       gets rude.

Reck's hand shakes and his face reddens slightly as he takes
the hand of the vixen. "So, you're from a magic bloodline." Reck
laughs as he realizes he talks swift when trying to sell a
product. " I apologise for my swift speech. I'm uncomfortable
around people. Sales generally go quicker when I talk fast." He
smiles at Val. "A botany shop would do this place some good.
Something to help keep the mood bright. Besides not many people
dislike flowers." He takes a long pause to think. " You're going
to have to learns alot to open a shop in the city though. Would
you like some help?" His expression reflecting the sincerity of
       his offer.
Taking his time to think about the process of opening a
business and the costs. "If you help me learn your magic. I can
loan you the machine until you can start making payments. Just
when ever you can. " Reck looks to Val and Poe. "You seem like
good people, and I already feel like I can trust you. Reck
feeling like he's already made a friend in Valentine he smiles.
"So, how about it?" Looking around the almost empty shop he
let's out a chuckle. "I normally have nothing but time."

''Your solution would be a very viable one. I feel like we could
learn from each other more than I previously expected. Although,
being taught witchcraft is no easy task for it requires the help
of a familiar to restrain and tutor the adept. Besides, you will
require a book of shadows for some spells needs to be bound to
the book if you don't want anything to escape from your grasp.''
She casually explained to the porcupine. It was one of the first
time she had a conversation about magic with someone else than a
clan member and still feel ''normal''. Her familiar had remained
quiet since Reck asked him too. ''Teach me your modern way, and
maybe come to visit the small cottage I want to turn into a
botany shop. Of course, some alterations will have to be done
but it's a quiet little neighbourhood that soon will be full of
flowers and exotic plants.''She said giggling and smiles
       awkwardly.
''And for the magic components, foci and rituals I will provide
for you a few things that you seem to be lacking just like I am
lacking the proper equipment to open a shop. So, shall we call
it a fair exchange?'' Val's vocabulary happened to be off even
       with a language spell.
