Foreign Visitor

The oddly colored bat had never been in Mobotropolis before, but
he had a feeling that a tome was located here somewhere. Cleos'
tracking when it came to the very things he needed to restore
his country tend to be unreliable to him. All he could get was a
sense. If there is varjan magic of any form, he'll feel it. He
definitely felt it in this city. Where it was exactly is the
question. Doesn't even know what tome it is, as it's likely he
doesn't have a spell to retrieve it.
Cleos needed a plan and a clue. He wasn't going to get that by
standing around and getting stared at. Wait. His eyes shifted
around. Why were people staring at him? Perhaps because of his
height. Most of the inhabitants were all much shorter than he,
which is unusual to him. It was a first for him to come into an
unfamiliar territory with natives that may have never seen him
or his kind before.
"Are those tattoos?" Someone spoke behind him.
He turned around, seeing a small little mouse child barely
reaching his waist pointing at the markings on his body. Cleos
replied, accent as soft as his voice, "No, shey arre not. I vas
born with shem."
The mouse kid blinked, "Like Shadow?"
Cleos blinked in return, "... Who is Shadow?"

The sun’s rays poured down upon Mobotropolis city on this
fine day, pleasantly warming up the feathers of a Mobian whom
was enjoying a tranquil cup of tea; sitting outdoors of a nearby
café. She clicked her beak a few times after taking a sip,
savoring the herbal flavors as they rolled over her tongue
before setting the half-empty cup down with a contented sigh.
'What a glorious day.’ she thought to herself, though her
light blue eyes flickered over to an unusual sight; someone whom
she hadn’t met before. The observant bird watched from her
seat, taking note on how some citizens were staring at the
newcomer and overheard what the mouse child piped up about. With
a flick of her crest feathers, the avian gracefully rose to her
feet and decided to greet the newcomer.
“Helloooo~” she chirped in a sing-songy tune,
“Don’t think I’ve seen you around these parts
before, need a hand with navigating through the city?”

Cleos turned his head as someone else spoke up to him, seeing an
avian. Color scheme resembling that to his people... but he felt
no varjan magic from her of any kind. So she is a mobian. He had
hoped for a survivor. The varjan bat kept up a calm smile, and a
soft chuckle. "I don't shink I've been herre before. A little
help would be welcome." If she knew the city, it might help him
locate the tome that is here.
The sorcerer has to be sure, though, if she had seen or sensed
anything out of the ordinary. "Perhaps you may also help me with
something else." He brought his hands together and then
separated them, casting an illusion image of a strange door in a
language that isn't native to any known areas with gems placed
in a wide circle. The way it seemed, it looked like an alchemic
array. "I'm looking for anything like shis. I can feel varjan
magic in this city, but I cannot place an exact location. It is
important to me."

The bird tilted her head slightly, as though taking a better
look at the projection of the what the newcomer was in search
for; her keen eyes taking in how he conjured it as well, “Not a
hologram that’s a for sure…” she commented idly yet also
curiously. She paused to get a better look of the Chiroptera and
then returned her attention to the image, “Given what you’re
looking for, how you’re dressed and how you’ve conjured that
image, you must be a mage, correct?”
She frowned lightly in thought, making the effort to memorize
the appearance of the strange lettering of the foreign language,
its design, the colours, shapes and the formation the gems made.
The bird clicked her beak together before looking back up at
him, “How curious. Why would such an oddity be in a city like
this? I’ve never seen anything like this before and it doesn’t
look like it would be something an average citizen would see
everyday without piquing one’s curiosity.” she asserted before
tapping the tip of her beak thoughtfully, “Ah, well if you can
sense magic then I suppose that answers my earlier question.
Before I agree to anything, however, I’d like to know, what is
‘Varjan’, how large or small is this door, what is it, what does
it do, where does it lead to and more importantly, is it
dangerous?”

How he was dressed. He had nothing more than a scarf, gloves,
and boots. The wings attached to his arms made it difficult to
wear much. Did she think he had on a robe? He wasn't going to
ask. "I am a mage, yes." He answered. Cleos had been studying
for years, beyond decades. His longevity made it possible for a
much longer research time and at this point he felt that he has
mastered his element. Fire, but it had it's own touch of
necromancy and healing. Given the aspect his mother was, it was
fitting.
Cleos ceased the illusion once she taken in the imagery. Arms
folded in a relaxed stance, "My people's ancestors had planned
for a day where they would fall to invaders. So they placed
these doors throughout this world. What is behind them are the
keys I need to restore my people. These doors can only be opened
by certain aspects of spells. This fact makes it difficult for
me to open all of them." He moved a hand over and mystic flames
ignited over it. Orange and blue. Like the setting sun lighting
the ocean ablaze. The flame soon dissipated as the hand returned
to it's earlier position.
"To answer your questions. Varjan is Varja. It is what my race
is. We were a proud race of mages and sorcerers. Our land is so
dense with magic that we used magic in ways no one else in this
world could ever think of. It powered our lights, our
electronics, our very lives. The only downside is that this
magic also blocked the sun from us. We lived in total darkness
for centuries. We adapted, we changed to live with that. The
creatures and plants that live in Varija had also adapted to the
darkness." Cleos began, hands moving once more to reveal another
projection. His home. Constant darkness, but there was beauty
even in that. Plants and creatures that glowed, bioluminescence.
There was even an image of Cleos with his markings and eyes also
glowing in that twilight. "I have noticed the magic outside of
my home is less potent than mine." The projection disappeared
again, "But it feels different and I cannot harness it. The door
you speak of, is massive. But it sometimes is hidden by a
powerful illusion magic, by ruins, by the growth of plants,
anything that will obscure it. I can feel it here, like a pulse
of unimaginable power. It does not tell me where it is exactly
located... it could be anywhere."
His arms spread, and the membrane attached to his arms spread as
well. "There is no danger to what is within the door. But I can
imagine, if anyone had found it... their attempts to open it
would be in vain. Even if they managed to, they will only find
more questions than answers. They will not find a power they
seek."

It was very evident that the avian was watching very carefully
and hung off of every word being spoken. Perhaps she was not
engrossed with personal interest per say, but she certainly had
her reasons for being attentive beyond being polite. She also
appreciated how forthcoming he seemed to be about her questions,
which told her that he seemed to be a decent individual. Still,
the lyre bird knew very well that there was certainly more than
what meets the eye so it only felt natural for her to also feel
cautious.
“That’s quite the story you’ve got there, certainly not one I
hear often. It is a relief to hear that the Varja and their
environments have been able to adapt from such a drastic thing
to had happened over an extended period of time.” she commented;
curiosity piqued the more she looked at the conjured image of
what his homeland looked like, “As for the door, if it is
massive and only covered by a visual illusion, then I would
imagine it would be likely located in parts of the city with
wider, more open spaces and not so much the more densely
populated areas with buildings clustered close together; for
example.
“If I’m completely honest, however, if it’s in the city I doubt
that it would have gone completely unnoticed. I’m aware of
several individuals with specialized talents and heightened
senses – some even specifically with skills to seek and sense
power of various levels or as far as being able to see life
forces should there be any beyond those doors too.
Alas, I have none of such skills, for I am but a
humble Impressionist.” she concluded with a sigh, ending
her sentence by matching his voice, tone and accent perfectly as
a small demonstration before offering a slight bow.
“Seeing as you are unable to pinpoint the location and with so
many specific security measures in place that are so foreign to
just about everyone other than your people, I do not think I can
be of much help to you; I’m afraid. I certainly haven’t seen
anything of the like before and that I would likely waste both
our times by wandering aimlessly. However, I can offer something
to you which would likely be more useful than I.” she declared
before pulling out a personal copy she had of the map of the
city along with a pen; encircling where they were currently
standing and also encircling other areas which seemed likely to
house a massive, conceal door in various parts of the city,
“Please, keep the map and I hope you find what you are looking
for, keep the other Varja safe from the invaders and that you
are able to restore them – by means of which, whatever that may
entail.”
She then cast him a smile and politely waved farewell before
turning to go about her business within the city, likely to seek
out an old friend perhaps; all without the two exchanging their
names.

People with skills that could do that? That actually be helpful
for him. If someone had known of it's location, then surely his
search would not take him so much time. The bat blinked as she
mimicked his voice... Exactly. How? Was that magic? No, he'd
have felt the energy. It was more of a talent. A rather
surprising one at that.
Perhaps she could still help. If there is a chance she knows
someone who may have encountered the door, then he will take it.
The detailed map he was given should suffice for him to wander
the city alone. He was in no hurry to find it, in any case. "The
only survivors I know are myself and my uncle, Dmitri." He
commented, folding up the map and placing it neatly into his
scarf. She was beginning to walk away, and they haven't even
introduced each other. To which, he just realized and felt
rather embarrassed about it.
Cleos walked after her, "I don't think we really introduced. I
apologize for that. My name is Cleos Cizek. If you have been
living in this city a while, perhaps you may know individuals
that could provide more help to me. I have no clue if I will
even be able to open this door with the spells I know. For all I
know, it may require a type of spell that I do not possess. At
least, not without years of studying to learn it." Even he
doesn't always have the kind of time to waste another few years
to learn spells he'll need to open every door. Not to mention,
he doesn't know many mages. Learning from a book required more
time. "I'm... not in any particular hurry to open it."

"Survivors?" Cello echoed with a tone thick with empathy as she
placed a hand on his shoulder; seeing as she didn't know the
full context of the plight of Cleos' people, she assumed it was
related to the recent war with the Eggman Empire all of Mobius.
With a war which had only recently ended, causalities were bound
to have happened. The avian then added with hopes of sounding
encouraging, "Hopefully all that you know of may not truly be
the case. If everyone in Varija have been able to adapt to
surviving with absolutely no sunlight for centuries, and judging
form how you've described it, with little consequences too -
which its pretty astounding I must admit - surely there would be
more out there. Maybe they're still in hiding."
She then paused to think over what she had just said, and to
what she had just learnt before reaching into the small bag she
was carrying and pulled out a pair of thick sunglasses. The bird
then smiled sweetly at the chiroptera and offered it to him,
"Since the dense magic is a lot weaker outside of your land and
after acclimatizing to such a situation, I'm surprised that
walking around in broad daylight doesn't seem to bother you.
Perhaps you were able to move freely out of your homeland and
had adjusted to it after some time before arriving here? In
which, if that was the case, it's surprising no one moved out
from having an area blocked out by the sun; I'm certain that you
would understand vastly more than myself that such a phenomenon
is no small thing." she asserted before chirping with mild
amusement before adding, "Ah there I go again, sorry, finding
out new data intrigues me and I like asking questions. Either
way, exposure to such saturated quantities by comparison without
the protective gear can't be healthy so please, take mine. Can
never be too careful with added protective gear I always say!"
After she had walked a fair distance into deeper parts of the
city, she had pulled out her phone and sent several texts to a
yellow, twin-tailed friend of hers. The bird looked up with
surprise to find that the newcomer had followed her and she
didn't seem the least bit worried about the lack of
introduction, "It's no problem at all, really. It's been a
pleasure making your acquaintance Cleos; I'm Cello." the lyre
bird replied smoothly before she habitually tilted her head
slightly in a bird-like fashion as she thought, "Hmm... well I
do know of some Mobians who have such abilities because I have
worked along side with them in the Resistance, but now I don't
even know where they are; let alone if they're in this city.
That being said, I'm sure trying to explore those parts of the
city should certainly be of some use t-"
Suddenly her phone started ringing and looking upon the screen
and Cello's reaction; it appeared to be coming from someone
important, "Oh dang, sorry I gotta take this. Do take care of
yourself, okay? Maybe we will bump into each other another time!
See you Cleos!"
With that the bird answered the phone and power-walked to a
quieter area of the city; out of sight as she disappeared
through one of the winding streets of Mobotropolis.

Cleos' people were decimated by something else. The chiroptera
had no idea who Eggman is and was never told of him. He only was
told of what laid waste to his country. It was many years ago,
nearly a century. "I have hope there are other survivors." Cleos
commented. Perhaps others were lucky to escape their fate... But
he had not seen or sensed them. Varjan magic wasn't so hard to
find. The doors were the only thing that made it difficult for
him to really find locations for. He just had to feel that
energy that also flowed within his veins.
He tilted his head as she pulled out a pair of sunglasses and
offered it. Admittedly, he is not that much used to the sun. He
never considered putting on a cloak, but he managed to adapt by
having a protective spell. Then again, his affinity is fire, so
he was much more resistant to it. [sub]That would mean, if there
are survivors... they would not enjoy the sun either.[/sub] None
the less, he accepted them and placed them on his face. It sure
made sight easier for him with the rays of the sun blocking from
his eyes. "Perhaps I am more lucky. I have more resistance to
fire and heat due to my affinity." His uncle was the same, too.
Cleos appreciates the kindness, "You are free to ask me as many
questions as you wish whenever you have time. I am willing to
answer... I have a lot of time, myself." He told her. Indeed he
had a lot of time. Cleos had been alive for almost a century.
Half his life was to study and master his magic so he may bring
new hope to his land.
Her phone rang and she had to go. That was fine. He will let her
go about her business... It will give him the opportunity to go
ahead and explore this city. "Take care, Cello." Perhaps he can
find the door. He took the map that he put in his scarf to look
over it and started his search in one of the nearest areas that
may have what he is looking for. Using pheonix carry, he
levitated the map near him so he had free hands to search and
avoid getting distracted. The less he needed was to bump into
someone.
