A Haunting Memory
By: Sonic Date: July 7, 2016, 5:01 am
---------------------------------------------------------
It was a cold winter morning out near a rabbit borrow by the
lake. Sonic was heading out to look for Karahl but he had one
stop to make first. The hedgehog was wearing a thick trench-coat
that was blowing in the breeze. Animals were chitchatting away
and running around from birds to deer. Sonic stood before a lone
headstone with a somber look upon his face. He stood in silence
for just a moment before he started to talk to the headstone as
if it were a real person. "I'm sorry I've been around very
often. I've just been so busy with saving the city and bailing
out my friends. I swear those guys just wouldn't know what to do
without me. You can't be too lonely right? I mean, I chose this
place because I figured all the animals could keep you company.
I know you always loved those critters even more than me." His
face sinking deeper into his jacket as the windchill sets in.
"So you've been angry with me lately? I've seen you in places
you shouldn't be. They say you can see loved ones in everyday
places even after there gone. But you've been talking to me.
Trying to convince me you're still alive. I saw you die. This
isn't like story books where the prince can bring the princess
back with a kiss, once you're gone that's it. So that must mean
you've been haunting me. You keep trying to convince me you're
alive and I think I know why. You're haunting me because I
couldn't save you." Sonic gave pause his speech trembling as he
pressed on placing his hand atop the grave. The headstone read
'Here lies Sapphire Hedgehog.
Beloved friend and true hero who perished in the fires of
Robotropolis.'
Taking a moment to run his fingers over the words Sonic started
breaking down. "Sapphire I tried to save you......I
just.....I.....I did everything in my power to stop you from
slipping away. As you vanished to dust on the wind I remember
desperately grasping at the air for just an inch of you. You
gave your life so the rest of us could live. You paid a prince
the rest of us will never be able to repay. When I find the
chaos emeralds I'm going to destroy them so they can never hurt
anybody ever again. Just please." Sonic fell to his knees as
rain started to fall. He threw his arms around the cold stone
slab shaking his head trying to keep his emotions in check.
"Just please tell me it's going to be okay. Tell me what I can
do so you can finally rest." He croaked out with his voice
becoming harsh.

"It's going to be okay"
A soft small hand would go to Sonic's shoulder, squeezing it
gently for comfort, "Everything is going to be okay" The hand
would be removed and he'd find someone smaller then him in size
would wrap their arms around him from behind and hug him close,
"You're going to be okay" The voice would probably be familiar
to Sonic, as it belonged to the one whom he made the gravestone
for in the first place but.. If she where dead, how was she
here? Hugging him and talking to him now?
"This is a very beautiful spot" Sapphire said as she let him go
and sat down on the grass, ushering over a small bushy tailed
woodland creature, probably a chipmunk or a squirrel. It'd crawl
up into her lap and she'd, with gentle and careful hands, would
begin to stroke its soft brown fur.
"I'm so sorry for popping up like that on you. I should've
picked a better time to try and talk to you as well. I'm sorry
Sonic" She'd rub her teary eyes before rubbing her right leg,
which was bruised and bloody but patched up with medical tape,
as was her arms and other parts of her body.
The hedgehog would remove a broken medical pack from her back
which had a funny looking nozzle gun attached to it, carefully,
she'd set it down in the grass. "I know you don't think I'm
real, I know you think you saw me die. But if you'd like. I can
and will explain to you to the best of my ability how I'm alive
and why I'm still here and back in this time again" She held up
her hands and closed her eyes, "I know it's hard to believe and
you have every right to call me a fake, a ghost, a copy, and you
don't have to listen, in fact, I'll get up and go and never
bother you again if that's what you want. But.." She'd, for the
first time at arriving here, look Sonic in the eyes, her bright
chan ones gleamed lightly with a bit hope, a bit of hope in that
he'd give her the chance to explain. Looking into his wonderful
blue eyes, Sapphire would reach up and touch the gunshot wound
in Sonic's ear, very gently thoufh to not disturb the scar.
She'd fumble with it the exact way Sonic did at times.
Retracting her hand she'd give a light smile and then look away,
"But the choice is yours, I'll stay and explain if you want. Or
get up and go for real if you wish. Just say the word".

Sonic turned trembling as he heard the familiar voice. The
battered and bruised visage of Sapphire stood before him. She
spoke many words yet her mere presents spoke volumes to the
grieving hero. Slowly backing away from the ghost that had come
to haunt him he paused when he felt her touch his ear. The
sensation of her flesh against his open wound he felt something.
The lingering sting of her gentle touch hurt and more
importantly he felt it. It was at that moment he knew the girl
before him had the same blood flowing in her veins. He threw his
arms around the worn phantom hugging her tightly just as he had
wanted to when her visage faded away into the wind that long
year ago. As he held her in his arms his fingers dug into her
back gripping tightly making sure she was really there.
This couldn't really be happening could it? This was too good to
be true but Sonic didn't care. His dear daughter was here within
his arms within reach. After a moment he expressed concern for
the harm she seemed to have endured recently. The two spent
hours catching up after that as Sapphire had told him the whole
sad story. With the two reunited Sonic had new found hope for
life and the quest ahead of him. Still worried about Sapphire's
wounds he dropped her at the city hospital and promised to hunt
down the scoundrel that had harmed her. However now he had found
his girl it was time Sonic went out and found his woman.
