       Wandering the Wilderness
By: Mallow the Rabbit Date: January 19, 2016, 9:28 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Warren Lapin, formally know as Mallow Rabbit; walked through the
wilderness. He could see the first settlement up ahead. A small
ghost town of a village, nestled in the folds of a set of desert
cliffs. Upon entering the valley road, he was flanked on either
side by houses built into the cliff sides, a hybrid of plaster
and stone. He pulled down the scarf covering his muzzle, and
would start looking around for any buildings that weren't homes.
He listened through the whistling of the wind and heard the
sounds of the residents going about their normal lives,
completely untouched by the chaos the world was in. A few of
these civilians were outside on their front porches, looking
down at him with suspicion and an unfriendly gaze.
Warren stopped in front of the loudest building and knew it was
the place he was searching for. The local watering hole. A
saloon. The rabbit stepped up the wooden steps and pushed
through the swinging doors and was immediately greeted by
silence. He ignored the eyes following him as he crossed over to
the bar, and slid up on the stool.
The bartender, an elderly coyote, looked at him with a hard
gaze. "What will be, stranger?" A customer was a customer.
"Cactus water." He knew that was what was mostly harvested in
these parts, he grew up on that stuff, depending on the type of
cactus, it could be either really bitter and sour, or really
tangy and sweet. The contents of the glass places in front of
him was the sour bitter combo. He drank it down slowly. There
were a lot of nutrients in this drink, and he had get all he
       could.

Sat aside in the saloon, a simian gal lifted her gaze from her
own glass of cactus juice, a glance offered up to the lapine who
just entered. She hummed to herself. Maybe he was another
stranger to this place? She certainly was. Fingers flicked
open a compact from her side satchel, and she twisted up some
lipstick from its tube. With a quick application, she stood up,
put her compact and lipstick away, and approached the bunny at
       the bar.
"You seemed to know what they have here, handsome." She sat
near him, but not beside him. "So I can only think you know
       your way 'round these parts."
She turned where she sat, adjusting her bodysuit and then her
hair. Fingers glided up through the green curl at the end of
her hair, and made it spring. Red-painted lips pushed out while
her haunting blue-green eyes locked to Warren.
"Maybe you can show a lady around, or at least help her know
what's worth eating while she's in town?"

The rabbit glanced towards the female voice and did a double
take. His eyes widened behind the yellow lens as he found
himself staring at the monkey. He slowly lowered the goggles
from his eyes so he could see the colors of her outfit better.
Well he had to hand it to her, she did have fabulous taste in
style. 'A bold choice of lipstick but it did compliment the dark
colors and it went well with her eyes.
Warren cleared his throat and returned the goggles to their
position around his eyes, and replies. "Sorry, darlin. My first
time in this here town. I just know the territory." he looked
her at again. "I'm sure whatever these fine people serve is good
       to live on."
The bartender, an eavesdropper and gossiper leaned said for both
of them to hear. "We got a tavern down the road, mighty good
cookin'. Tell Miss May I sent ya. She'll treat you right."
The rabbit stored this information, he would have a place to
sleep for the night before he moved on, and treating this lady
shouldn't be too expensive. "Well, alright then." he turned back
to the female monkey and got to his feet. "Would you like to
       accompany me, miss...?"

Aw, this one was cute. She loved how he had to look at her
       twice, and lower his goggles.
"Well, listen to you! You're a stranger too, after all." She was
tickled, giddy at this revelation. She scoot over one more seat
to be at Warren's side. "Oh, well, I suppose you are right of
that," in response to Warren figuring there had to be good food
       somewhere.
As the bartender spoke, Belle listened and nodded her head.
"Oh, well, that's good information to know, thank you kindly,
sir." Drawl tone followed her vowels in a sweet and ladylike
coo. From the stool she rose, and returned to her former table
to grab her scarf, helmet, goggles, and drink. She finished the
drink and politely set the emptied glass upon the counter,
pinkie finger put to use so not to make a clatter.
Then came Warren's offer. "Accompany me? Why, sugar..." She
leaned in, eye to eye with him, cheeks raised with her sense of
       fortune, "...that sounds lovely."
She offered up her hand to Warren, sleek glove well-polished.
Handshake or kiss would suffice. "A pleasure to meet you. My
proper name is Belle Pepper Annuum, but you can simply call me
Belle. Might I know the name of the beau so eager to follow me
       along for supper?"

Warren blanked for a moment as strange feelings started to rise
in him, then quickly slid behind his mental stage mask for
protection and took hold of her hand and shook it lightly. "I am
Warren, Warren Lapin." he said smoothly, outwardly showing his
cool indifferent self; but on the inside part of him wanted to
find a corner and rock himself in a tight ball and question his
       sexuality.
What was happening to him? Was it because he'd never actually
been in a relationship, that he was feeling like a total moron?
The rabbit's outward demeanor remained calm as he smiled and
paid for his drink then offered his arm. Grateful that she was
close to his height, perhaps an inch shorter.
He would lead her out and in the direction of the tavern. The
tavern in question was a quaint diner that had been expanded
into an inn as well. The owner, Miss May, was a kind and high
spirited old goat, with a generous heart, but brains to turnout
any riffraff that came to her doorstep. She greeted them both as
they walked in her establishment. "Welcome! Are you getting a
room or dining in, or both?"
Warren smiled at her, and said. "Table for two, please." He
would get the room after the meal, as he would not want to make
this awkward. They were given a table by the windows and a
waitress gave them both menus. It was a rather nice place for a
settlement, but this only meant that they had survived for this
long out here in the wilderness. Warren had to commend them for
that. He glanced over the menu items, looking for any vegetarian
       dishes.

"Warren...? Well, I'm charmed." She pulled her hand back after
that handshake, head given a slight tilt as she noticed a slight
anxiety on Warren's brow. The young man was trying his best to
hide it, but she knew. Better for her to not bring that up.
That would be rude, to point out his discomfort.
As the two of them left the saloon, Belle gave a quick check on
her motorcycle. Nobody had touched it. Good. She sauntered
over to it, put up the kick stand, and walked the motorcycle
along with she and Warren. Once outside the tavern, Belle set
up her motorcycle, gave it a quick glance-over, and followed
Warren to take a seat. Quiet for a moment, but bright and
chipper with Miss May. "Dinner for now, room for later - just
me, I mean." She answered after Mallow, not in the know that
he, too, needed a place to stay for the night.
Eyes scanned the menu and shoulder raised. "It's been a long,
long time since I came through the desert. Last time was with
my daddy ... may he rest in peace; he and Momma both. I figured
coming out here would be a good rest for my soul, knowing how
much they loved the sunsets here, but that blasted maniac..."
She held her breath and set down her menu, looking across to
Warren. "Sugar, I'm sorry, perhaps I am coming out to strong
about myself and the current news. Should I just leave those
shadows behind for this evening? Happier things, I'm sure,
would make a better conversational piece."

Warren had decided on the vegetable stew, when Belle spoke. He
glanced up at her as he listened. He had an idea of whom she was
referring to as 'that maniac'. Shaking his head he replied.
"It's alright. I've got ears, I can listen if you want to get it
out. You don't know me, so I'm not going to judge either way.
But if you want to talk about something else, I can tell you a
little about myself, and perhaps you can tell me a bit about
yourself." he said, pausing when the waitress came again with
two glasses of water and took out a notepad for their orders.
"I'll have the vegetable stew and a butter biscuit." He said,
handing her the menu, then waited for his guest to decide before
continuing. "Does that sound alright with you?"

Belle rolled her eyes a bit, but not out of irritation. This
was more out of letting herself open up so quickly - always with
the cute ones. Warren was a rabbit. Who heard of an aggressive
rabbit? That was her fault for stereotyping somebody by their
species, but she chose not to say that out loud. "Oh... Oh!
Well, maybe we can talk back and forth, simple things, to get
our minds off the worst of it."
She tapped on the menu, "The fried yucca with the split pea
soup, please? Would be delightful, Miss May." The menu
returned to Miss May from Belle's hand before the monkey spoke
up again through crimson lips. "So, as I was saying before -
good memories. My momma and daddy brought me out here when I
was younger. I remember that the skies were so clear and
cloud-free. The stars shone like the diamonds on Momma's
wedding 'rang' and Daddy cuddled her tight as the sky turned
from orange to rose to purple, and a deep, deep blue. Never did
it fully go black, I'd say." She scrunched up her shoulders and
hollowed her cheeks as she emphasised her words with joy.
"Oooh, and the shooting stars were so 'purdy' that night, with
tails longer than that on a kangaroo rat! Clear 'cross the sky,
       and shimmering off into stardust."
She looked down, going quiet for a second, her voice softening.
"I wished with 'dem that I'd come back here some day. Jus'
didn't know it would be 'withaut' them." Her smile now gentle,
she reached to tap Warren's fingers in a light, playful manner.
"Now your turn, sugar. Got some nice memories of your kin?"

Warren stiffened slightly but slowly relaxed himself. "I uh..."
he smiled and gave a shrug. "I have a lot of good memories. I
was born in this desert, the 9th child out of 12. I had 5
brothers and 6 sisters. My father and mother raised us in a
settlement in cliffs near Sand Blast City." His eyes glazed over
with the memories of those times. "We were all close, but I was
closest to my big brother W-... Mallow... He was the third born,
and the second son. He was always so strong, I really looked up
to him. He'd take me out in the wilderness to show me new
fighting moves he learned from some old warriors that lived in
the city and settlements nearby." Mal-Warren chuckled at a
particular memory. "There was this one time, he showed me this
really strong kick, and I tried to do it too, and my shoe flew
off and went flying, we spent hours looking for that shoe until
we had to go home before dark." he shook his head, swallowing
thickly and took a sip of water.
It was hard for him to talk about them, but there were moments
he didn't feel bad at sharing. They reminded him of the better
times. But then there was the inevitable following memories that
       stirred horrible, painful feelings inside.

"My! What a large family, and what tender memories." She
chuckled, took a sip of water, and commented along. "You
learned skills from your older brother? What you say his name
was? Willow? ... No, Mallow. Imagine that. Sounds he was
sweet as his namesake at least, to look after ya as a youngin'."
Eyes trailed to the window, peering up into the skies.
"Mobotropolis is where I remember spending the most time, but
Momma, Daddy, Ginger - my younger sister - and I really didn't
stay one place too long." She lowered her posture, gaze
returned upon Warren, her voice a whisper. "Y'see, Daddy was in
some special agencies and forces. Now, I never knew if he was
just a freedom fighter or with an actual government assignment,
but he was always keeping us on 'da' move."
Her posture straightened, slow and form strong. Hands folded,
rested on the table, but not for long as her left hand reached
the straw in her water, to stir her thoughts and not just her
ice. "Now don't get me wrong, I don't think we were fugitives
or the like, but whatever it was Daddy did was real shady."
With a smirk, and shake of her head, she spoke gently of their
demise, "Was illness that got 'em both, though. Daddy before
Momma, one year to the date from one-the-other. They weren't
sad 'bout it none, and both went peacefully. So!" She grinned
immediately to Warren, "Don't you 'fret none' neither. I jus'
       miss 'dem is all."
