Nikki and Maurice

Nikki Parlouzer and Maurice “Sonic” Parlouzer
Age: 14
Gender: Male (He/him pronouns for just one, they/them pronouns
for Nikki and Maurice together)
Species: Hedgehog
Powers: Super speed (Sonic 1 type- unable to break the sound
barrier, unable to spindash, boost, etc) can physically switch
to Maurice using a power ring
Nikki’s personality: A quiet, modest kid with a kind heart.
Compared to Maurice, he is very careful and a bit timid. A bit
awkward around new people, but he opens up a lot more to his
friends. He loves to read and learn new things, and was often
regarded as a bit nerdy. He’d love to be able to share Maurice’s
strength and confidence, especially to help others, but he can’t
seem to believe in himself enough to do the same things… Nikki
is generally considered the older and more experienced of the
two, and since Nikki also fronts by default he normally decides
what they do. Although he doesn’t have Maurice’s speed (or any
other abilities) Nikki is generally faster to make decisions,
analyze a situation, or come up with a plan. He can easily
forget about the little things in life while prioritizing what
to do, and that often includes Maurice’s feelings when deciding
things for the both of them. Nikki’s dream when he was a little
kid was to be a hero, but as he grew older it changed to
following in his father’s footsteps. Maybe someday he’ll start
his own plane delivery, since he can’t inherit Poly’s.
Maurice’s personality: Loud and a bit obnoxious, and apparently
lacking any kind of filter between his thoughts and his mouth.
Maurice is incredibly naïve and excitable, and has a tendency to
brag more than he should. It’s not that he doesn’t know his
limits, but he gets caught up in impressing others easily. He
doesn’t normally know what to do with himself in crowds, and
tends to run from most social situations if he can’t hand it off
to Nikki. Maurice has a strong sense of justice, though he
doesn’t care much at all for the title of “hero,” and would
probably work himself to the bone helping others if he could,
and has a… slightly skewed sense of what counts as dangerous or
an emergency. Being dormant for most of his and Nikki’s shared
life, Maurice is still amazed by the world, and somehow he
always seems to find new things to love about it. You could
actually call him a bit of a romantic, if not in the
relationship sense, and despite his speed he frequently stops to
carefully admire things. He can often get frustrated by Nikki
disregarding his opinions when the other hedgehog is fronting,
and secretly wishes to be free to live his own life.
//Nikki and Maurice originate from Zone 1-992, where they were
the local counterpart of Sonic the Hedgehog. Nikki was the
dominant personality for most of their youth, with Maurice being
dormant and unknown to Nikki. A scuffle after school with a
bully named Anton led to Nikki’s best friend Eimi getting taken
and Nikki being knocked down into a tangled grove. However, the
pool hidden there was actually a small ring pool, and Nikki
ended up taking one of the power rings from it, causing
Maurice’s personality to take over along with physically
changing their form to match the other hedgehog. Although he
didn’t have any real connection to them, Emi’s shouts for help
drew Maurice towards them, and he ended up rescuing her from
Anton before Nikki regained control without any memory of the
incident.
//After that, the two continued on without any knowledge of the
other. Whenever Nikki or those close to him were put in danger,
the residual power of the ring would cause Maurice to take over
and save the day. The mysterious hero was named “Sonic” by the
public, because of his speed, which was rumored to be just below
the speed of sound- faster than any other Mobian on that world.
After about a year, though, the two ended up discovering each
other, becoming able to communicate with each other mentally
regardless of who was fronting. Finding the ring pool again,
they were able to control their physical transformation with
power rings, although having a constant way of controlling it
seemed to make them unable to change without the new crutch.

//Maurice and Nikki consider each other brothers. Maurice’s name
was unknowingly given to him by Nikki’s father Poly by Nikki
asking what he would have named another son, and Maurice
generally likes it more than “Sonic” because of the connection
it gives him to the Parlouzer family. Poly and Burenda are Nikki
(and Maurice)’s parents, and Anita is Nikki’s little sister.
Eimi remained Nikki’s best friend, and gained a big crush on
Maurice after he saved her from Anton, who eventually ended up
being friends with the two hedgehogs he’d teased. Miles Prower
became close friends with Sonic by helping him with his
adventures, and ended up becoming the first to know about his
split personality other than Nikki and Maurice themselves.
Charmy Bee was found in a treasure box on accident by Poly and
Nikki, and ended up helping Sonic using his magic; and Eimi’s
brother Little John and Anton’s sibling Mad were good friends
with Anita, meanwhile, and they would sometimes come along with
their older siblings on adventures. Nikki and Maurice both cared
for all of them deeply.
//Which made it even worse when they woke up alone, in the
custody of Zonic. As far as anyone could tell, Zone 1-992 had
disappeared without a trace, other than that Zone’s Sonic who
was left behind and would have likely died if the Zone Cops
didn’t retrieve him in time. The two were given some time to
mourn before the Zone Cops had to relocate them somewhere, and
they still haven’t completely moved past what happened, and
quietly hope they’ll eventually be able to find answers and
closure for what happened. The Zone they ended up being left in
was the “Spotlight Zone,” where they’ve been for the last month
or so. Maurice seems eager to explore and help out, but
apparently Nikki would rather they keep to themselves…
