In other words......

Having finally been alerted to Karahl's current state had lost
all hope. He finally stopped running and lost the will to fight
he dragged his feet across the ground reaching his destroyed
apartment. After tricking Ember he had been trying to find out
who was behind all of this but to no avail. He walked into the
ruins of his once happy home. He kicked away a large piece of
debris covering his bed. He picked up his raging red guitar and
bushed the dust off it. Still sad a frown on his face he dragged
his axe behind him until he dropped sitting at the shattered
steps of his door. Sonic strummed the strings while turning the
knobs to tune it. Once the desired tune had been achieved his
fingers hit the threats and plucked the strings starting a
bluesy ballad with a slightly upbeat tempo. He soon started to
sing sorrow in his voice hardly able to hold himself together.
♪ Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, darling, kiss me
Fill my heart with song
And let me sing for ever more

All I worship and adore

He took a break from his pleading cries in song and played an
entire guitar solo. His fingers went faster and faster strumming
plucking as the sound escalated becoming more energetic carrying
a somber undertone.
♪ Fill my heart with song
Let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you
in other words,
I love... you ♪
As he finished he closed his eyes and dropped his guitar. The
candy red instrument hit the ground making a musical flat thud.
Sonic held his head in his hands looking down not knowing how to
deal with all this loss. How did one keep fighting with no clear
foe and this family shattered like endless shards of raining
glass. Sonic reality was crumbling around him this was a type of
foe he's never faced before. What made it harder they had no
clear target or objective just wandering aimlessly.

Float walked through the streets, trying to resist the urge to
jump at every shadow she came across. The hybrid was on edge,
mind running with worried thoughts that only served to put her
on edge. After she had met with the tigress Karahl, she had
gotten lost, and was forced to return to Knothole to re-orient
herself. She hadn't seen anyone since then, only now returning
to the city. 'I wonder what happened to Sonic and Sapphire...
are they okay?' She wondered, wincing slightly. The last she'd
seen of them, they had been kidnapped and, in Sonic's case,
badly injured. 'I hope that Karahl, Maddie and the others were
able to rescue them...' She sighed. They would have saved them,
and she would have been wandering around uselessly in
Knothole... of course. Not focusing on where she was walking,
she jumped in surprise as she nearly tripped over a broken chunk
of wood. "Huh?" Float blinked in confusion, looking up.
Her blood ran cold as her heart skipped a beat at the sight of
the ruined apartment. Her breath hitched sharply, images of her
own home's ruins overtaking her vision. Her breath quickened as
she clenched her eyes shut, hands covering her face as the sound
of screams came to her ears. "N-no... no! I'm n-not there any
m-more... I'm not t-there!" Float chanted, shaking her head as
she fell to her knees, trying to forget the gruesome images.
"Fly me to the moon... Let me play among the stars..." Float's
ears twitched as the song reached through her memories, calming
her slightly. As the familiar voice sang, she felt the pain of
the memory fading, allowing her to pull herself back to the
present. She swallowed, moving her hands from her face and
opening her eyes, looking up. 'Fill my heart with song... And
let me sing for ever more..."
"T-that voice..." Float murmured softly, shakily rising back to
her feet. "...S-Sonic?" Her ears stood up as she followed the
sound of the guitar, carefully picking through the rubble. Soon,
she caught sight of the blue hedgehog lying on a bed in the
rubble, playing the guitar and singing his heart out.
"You are all I long for, all I worship and adore..." Float
paused at the edge of the rubble, clasping her hands and
listening silently. "In other words, please be true..." Float's
eyes softened, her heart reaching out to the hedgehog. "In other
words... I love... you."
Float jumped slightly as Sonic dropped his guitar, the clearing
falling silent. She hesitated for a moment, looking at the
hedgehog, before slowly approaching. She paused next to his bed,
bending over and picking up the guitar, before standing again.
She looked down as she spoke. "...Y-your song was l-lovely..."
Float complimented quietly, her words made louder by the dead
silence of the early morning. She looked up. "...And it was
v-very s-sad." She shifted her grip on the guitar, swallowing
before she continued. "...S-Sonic... What's w-wrong? W-what...
what h-happened?"

Sonic looked up a hopeless and depressed glint in his eye. As
float approached he simply looked down. "Oh...hey there Float.
You're still around thats good to know. I thought you'd have
been swept up with all the other missing girls...like...- He
swallowed as she came closer find it hard to talk at all his
voice light and uncertain. "Thanks...sometimes when you don't
know what else to do music helps." He lightly knocked over his
heart with a fist. "It's good for the soul....." As she asked
Sonic gave a loud huff and closed his eyes. "........They got
Sapphire..." He closed his eyes tighter his voice now barely
able to pronounce out of fear for his own words. "They...these
new terrorists I'd call em...they roboticized Kara's
insides...downloaded her brain. Now her body's a feral shell
and....and....she's gone..." He looked up opening his eyes a
helpless look was abound. "You took a pretty nasty fall back
there. You feeling okay." He inquired holding a single hand over
his eye.

"M-missing girls?" Float asked, blinking. She frowned slightly
and hesitated, before sitting next to him. She nodded slightly
at his statement about music- even when she was at her worst, a
song always seemed to calm her and bring her back to reality.
She seemed about to smile, when he mentioned Sapphire, causing
her head to jerk up sharply. "S-Sapph..? W-who..?" Her heart
dropped. "K-Karahl..?" Float stuttered, shocked. She had quickly
taken to the tigress upon meeting her, admiring her strength and
elegance. And now... She swallowed, covering her mouth with one
hand. "T-that's... that's a-awful..." She seemed on the verge of
crying, when she caught Sonic's eye. He looked so hopeless... It
wasn't right. She looked down, shaking slightly. 'I couldn't
help Sapph or Karahl... I have to at least try to help Sonic...'
She softly plucked at the strings of the guitar to calm herself
down, before her hand went limp. She looked up, trying to think
of something to say.
"...U-uncle Tails used to s-say that n-no one is e-ever r-really
gone f-forever..." Float said finally. "A-and that w-we should
n-never stop b-believing that thing c-can get b-better.." She
hugged the guitar closer, briefly gaining a faraway look. "He
seemed so confident when he said it... I think that he must have
know something we didn't." She blinked, shaking her head to
bring herself back to the moment. "I-I'm sorry... I d-don't know
h-how to help you, r-really..." She sighed, before looking back
up at Sonic. She frowned, lowering her ears. "..I-I'm fine. I...
I've a-actually been in K-Knothole..." She winced, tail lashing
slightly. "Useless..." Float mumbled, before sighing. 'Float,
stop that! This isn't about you.'
She hesitated, before standing and turning to look at Sonic.
"I'm s-sure there's a w-way to fix t-things... b-but s-sometimes
it's hard t-to think when you're c-caught up in your
f-feelings..." Float said nervously, speaking from experience,
before holding out a hand to help Sonic stand up with her.
"M-maybe... maybe you just n-need to t-take a step b-back to
figure out what t-to do. W-we can work it out t-together, i-if
you'd like."

"Uncle Tails huh..... I don't know how to break this to you kid.
But the future is going to be a very different place than you
remember it. At this point Sapphire might not even be born." He
couldn't bring himself to say Tails was dead he hadn't come to
accept it himself. "You know that sounds like a good saying.
Sounds like something I would have taught him. Only problem is
I'm not feeling much like myself." Sonic took her hand pulling
himself up before looking away placing his hands in his pockets.
"You know without my close friends and family I'm just....Well
Let's say one bad day from going green."

Float looked down slightly, working up her nerve, before
stepping forward and hugging Sonic. She tried to put all of her
good feelings into that moment, before she pulled away, shifting
slightly. "E-even if we d-don't m-make it in t-the f-fight,
we'll g-go with the knowledge t-that we helped t-to m-make
things b-better f-for the p-people to come a-after us. That's
all a-any of us n-need to d-d-depart in peace- i-if we could
have m-made a d-difference, a-any difference at all, i-it
w-would all have b-been w-worth it." She looked back up at
Sonic, trying to smile. "Uncle T-Tails t-taught us that, t-too.
I-in the f-future, we've all a-accepted it." She looked down
again, tail twisting around her legs. "I c-came b-back because I
t-thought that I m-might be able to m-make a d-difference here,
e-even though I knew that... t-there might be c-consequences."
She swallowed, rubbing her eyes. "I think S-S-Sapphire knew,
too."
She paused, before holding out Sonic's guitar to him and looking
up, forcing herself to hold his gaze. "E-even i-if our f-friends
can't be w-with us in b-body, they're a-always with us in
s-spirit. We j-just n-need to r-remember them a-and hold them in
o-our hearts... and they'll be w-with us, always." She blinked,
feeling the urge to shy away, but she forced herself to hold
Sonic's gaze, hoping her eyes would show her sincerity.
"Y-you're nothing like... h-him. You c-can s-still make it
through t-this." She frowned, allowing herself to look down
briefly, before looking back up. "S-so, if S-Sapph and K-Karahl
are in t-trouble... W-who's still here that can h-help us save
them?" Her tail unwrapped from around her legs, flicking
slightly. "E-even if i-it s-seems like there's n-no one left,
t-there's always F-Freedom Fighters, r-right..? I-I mean..." She
glanced to the side in thought. "W-when R-R-Robotnik h-had
t-taken over... There w-was only s-seven of y-you... A-and y-you
s-still saved e-everyone..." She looked back towards Sonic,
smiling nervously. "T-these odds aren't t-that bad in
c-comparison, r-right?"

Sonic took the neck of his guitar while shaking his head. She
was still young seeing the good in everything. Sonic was selfish
and didn't care much for defending a world he no longer had ties
in. It was these ties that kept him going but this little otter
here had at least tried he had to give her that. He gave a light
smile. "Heh cheesy speeches about freedom and the future you
really are Sal's kid." He stood up straight hands by his sides
placing the guitar at the doorstep. "Look Float I'm going to let
you in on something. Real heroes are never as polished as the
legends that surround them. I'm not some peerless warrior for
whats right in life. I'm selfish egoistical and reckless. I just
fight for what I care about and when that's gone it's hard to
keep going." He finally took a last breath and gave her a thumbs
up with a smile. "But if you believe in me. Then I gotta try
right?" He said zipping about sending the girl into the air. He
grabbed her legs locking his arms around them as she sat atop
his shoulders. "Best seat in the house right? Now let's get
going we've got a city to save and a mystery to solve."

Float let go of the guitar once Sonic took it, folding her hands
behind her back. She blinked in surprise at his comparison to
her mother, blushing slightly and bringing her hands up to her
cheeks. "O-oh! T-thank you!" She exclaimed, flattered. She'd
always admired her mother- it was nice to hear that she was
taking after her. For a moment, she was able to forget her
doubts that she would never live up to the queen of her own
time. She rubbed at her cheeks as though to try and dispel her
blush as Sonic turned away, before trying to focus on his words.
She frowned slightly, preparing to try again at reassuring the
hero, when he smiled up at her. She blinked in surprise at the
thumbs up, before a smile spread across his face.
She yelped, eyes widening as she was tossed in the air and onto
the hedgehog's shoulders, hands moving to grip his quills to try
and stabilize herself. She looked down at the hedgehog in
surprise, before smiling softly. "Thank you..." She whispered,
before brightening. "L-l-let's d-do it t-to it!" Float
stuttered, half-raising a fist in a hesitant cheer.

"No worries I should be thanking you." As she spurted out his
catchphrase Sonic couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. "Man
I'm awesome!" He thought as his legs became a blur and the two
blasted off.
