About one third of the world’s land area is covered by forest.
Forests are home to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity.
Rainforests are responsible for the production of over 40% of
the world’s oxygen.
Around 1.6 billion people around the globe depend on forests for
their livelihoods.
The giant sequoia tree of North America is considered to be the
tallest living thing on the planet, growing to incredible
heights of 95 metres.

European beech woodland in spring, Bavaria, Germany
Top facts
Forests cover almost half of Europe’s land area.
Over the last 20 years forest areas in Europe have grown by 17
million hectares.
Excluding the Russian Federation, 39 million hectares of the
forest in Europe is protected.
Threats to the biodiversity of European forests include habitat
fragmentation, climate change

Grasslands UK

Habitats:
Top facts
In the UK there are a number of different types of grassland
which vary depending on the soil type and geography of the area.
Almost all the grassland in the UK is semi-natural, having been
altered throughout history by farming practices such as grazing,
mowing, burning and the removal of larger plants.
Meadows are perhaps the best known of all grasslands, famous for
their rich variety of wildflowers. They are cut for hay and
grazed during the winter.
Machair is a very rare grassland habitat, only found along parts
of the Scottish and Irish coasts.

There are over 175,000 islands on Earth.
Islands vary in size from just 0.15 square kilometres up to 2.2
million square kilometres.
Madagascar is thought to be the world’s oldest island.
Many island species are endemic, occurring nowhere else on
Earth.
Islands sustain over 50 percent of the world’s marine
biodiversity.

Rocky shores, UK

Habitats:
Description
The UK’s expansive coastline, which is well over 6,000
kilometres long, varies dramatically and presents a number of
different rocky habitats, ranging from calm, sheltered coves and
rocky beaches to tall, imposing cliffs. Within each of these
rocky habitats the conditions are highly dynamic, due to the
ever-changing tides (1) as well as additional environmental
factors such as temperature and wind (2). Rocky shores are
formed when waves erode softer rocks, leaving harder rocks
exposed (3).

Sandy shores, UK
By: eyeconic Date: April 5, 2018, 9:13 am

[quote author=eyeconic link=topic=47.msg47#msg47
date=1522937250]
Habitats:
Description
The shore is the point at which the land meets the sea, and
shores consist of varying substrates including mud, rocks,
pebbles, shingle and sand (1). Sand is formed by the gradual
erosion of rocks and shells constantly battered by the sea.
Eventually, fragments are broken down into small enough
particles that they can be suspended in the water and carried by
a process called longshore drift, finally being deposited
further along the coast (2).
The changing tide creates a variety of different habitats on
sandy shores...
