Polar bear
The polar bear is dependent on sea ice for its survival, but
climate change is causing drastic reductions in the extent of
ice cover across the Arctic region.
This reduces the polar bear’s access to prey, forcing them to
spend more time on land and rely on stored fat reserves. Less
food means bears will give birth to fewer, smaller young.
As the ice retreats, polar bears must increasingly travel across
open water, leading to greater mortality of cubs that are unable
to swim long distances.

Golden-crowned sifaka
Habitat loss means that the golden-crowned sifaka now has one of
the smallest distributions of all lemur species. While this
sifaka’s dry forest habitat was previously under threat from the
logging industry and bush fires, the recent discovery of gold in
the region has resulted in further swathes of forest
disappearing to make way for the miners, who also hunt lemurs
for food.

Ocean acidification facts
The rate at which our oceans absorb carbon dioxide is currently
100 times faster than it has been for millions of years.
22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are released by human
industrial activity each day, and a quarter of it is absorbed
into the ocean. The annual carbon dioxide emissions are thought
to be around six billion metric tonnes.
Cold water absorbs larger quantities of carbon dioxide than warm
water, and some areas of the polar seas are already so acidic
that the water slowly dissolves the shells of molluscs and other
shell-forming organisms.

Harlequin ladybird
The harlequin ladybird was originally introduced to the United
Kingdom as a biological control agent to manage populations of
aphids and other agricultural pests.
The large size, broad diet and high reproductive rate of the
harlequin ladybird give it an advantage over native ladybirds,
as does its ability to live in a broad range of habitats.
In cooler weather when there is a lack of aphids, the harlequin
ladybird may eat fruit crops, which can cause economic loss.

If the current rate of deforestation continues, it is thought
that the world’s forests will be gone in just 100 years
Forests are home to around 80 percent of known non-aquatic
animals
Around 1.6 billion people around the world rely on the ecosystem
services of forests to survive
Agricultural conversion and urbanisation are known to be the
primary drivers of deforestation

species on Earth.

rainforest plants.
• Plants play an important role in regulating the water
cycle, helping to distribute and purify the world’s water.
• More than a quarter of all modern medicines come from
tropical forest plants.
• One of the largest living things in the world is the giant
sequoia which can grow to incredible heights of up to 95 metres.
• At least one quarter of all plant species are threatened
with extinction.
