A Closer Look at Hummingbird Tongue Design
[move]Biologists had previously assumed that hummingbird tongues
worked by simple capillary action. Instead the tongues act as a
micropump. The pumping action fills the entire tongue in just 14
milliseconds.

SNIPPETS:
One of the memorable moments in Illustra Media’s documentary
Flight: The Genius of Birds
HTML http://flightthegeniusofbirds.com/
is the hummingbird tongue
animation (see it below). The unique nectar-trapping mechanism
of unfurling flaps (lamellae) on supporting rods that
automatically fold over to seal in the nectar was discovered by
two biologists at the University of Connecticut (see the paper
in PNAS
HTML https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.1016944108).
This was
cutting-edge science, because most biologists previously had
assumed the tongue worked by simple capillary action.

HTML https://youtu.be/dMw3RO7p9yg
The two biologists have continued their work since then, filming
hummingbirds in the wild. Along with a mechanical engineer who
is an expert in fluid mechanics, they published a paper in the
Proceedings of the Royal Society B
HTML https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2015.1014<br
/>that should increase our admiration for the design of this
structure. It’s not only a nectar trap; the hummingbird tongue
is a micropump!
News from UConn Today
HTML https://today.uconn.edu/2015/08/hummingbirds-use-tiny-pumps-to-extract-nectar/#<br
/>includes a video clip (below) of the tongue in action. The new
findings debunk the notion that capillary action called
“wicking” draws nectar up the tongue.

HTML https://youtu.be/QYoYQAbPXbU
--- Quote ---
> Rico-Guevara explains that a hummingbird’s tongue, which can
be stuck out about the same length as its beak, is tipped with
two long skinny tubes, or grooves. Rather than wicking, he says,
the nectar is drawn into the tongue by the elastic expansion of
the grooves after they are squeezed flat by the beak.
>
> The tongue structure is collapsed during the time it crosses
the space between the bill tip and the nectar pool, but once the
tip contacts the nectar surface, the supply of fluid allows the
collapsed groove to gradually recover to a relaxed cylindrical
shape as the nectar fills it.
>
> When the hummingbird squeezes nectar off its tongue during
protrusion, it is collapsing the grooves and loading elastic
energy into the groove walls. That energy subsequently
facilitates the pumping of more nectar. [Emphasis added.]
--- End Quote ---
In Concert with the Lamellae
This pumping action apparently works in concert with the
lamellae (flaps) shown in the Illustra film. The cylinders are
in a flattened shape when they enter the nectar. Having been
compressed by the beak, they store elastic energy that makes
them rapidly expand in the fluid as they unfurl. This expansion
helps to pump the fluid into the cylindrical cavity upward from
the lamellae. That way, more nectar can be delivered into the
bird’s mouth.
Figure 1 shows the beak in cross-section from a CT scan. It
looks beautifully designed to squeeze the tongue’s cylinders
during protrusion, with the lower bill fitting into spaces in
the upper bill that spread laterally to flatten the tongue as it
exits the bill tip. This design probably also squeezes the
previous load of nectar into the mouth at the same time. “After
complete loading, the grooves filled with nectar were brought
back inside the bill and squeezed for the next cycle, all in
less than a tenth of a second,” they observe. The caption for
Figure 1 explains how these two mechanisms (pumping and
trapping) work together:
--- Quote ---
> The hummingbird tongue fills with nectar even when only the
tip is immersed. (a) Hummingbirds can drink from flowers with
corollas longer than their bills by extending their bifurcated,
longitudinally grooved tongues to reach the nectar. During
protrusion, the tongue is compressed as it passes through the
bill tip, which results in a collapsed configuration of the
grooves (cross-section). (b) Upon reaching the nectar, the
tongue tips fringed with lamellae roll open and spread apart,
but some of the grooved portions of the tongue will never
contact the nectar pool. For the grooves to fill with nectar,
they must return to their uncompressed, cylindrical
configuration.
--- End Quote ---
Why doesn’t the collapsed tongue rebound immediately after it
leaves the beak and enters the air? That would result in open
tubes that would need to fill by capillary action when they
enter the nectar. But capillary action is much slower than the
observed filling. Apparently the tongue material is designed
HTML http://renewablerevolution.createaforum.com/gallery/renewablerevolution/3-250817121649.png<br
/>to expand upon contact with the nectar. “After contacting the
surface, the grooves expanded and filled completely with
nectar,” they found.
Birds in the Wild
All hummingbirds have this mechanism. They filmed 32 wild birds,
representing 18 species (in 7 of the 9 main hummingbird clades),
with a high-speed camera in natural wild habitats, undergoing
hundreds of feeding cycles — all with the same results. This
allowed them to falsify the “century-old paradigm” of the
capillary hypothesis and shed new light on this rapid, dynamic
process. ... ...
Capillary action could not have filled the cylinders this
rapidly. In addition, no meniscus (diagnostic of capillarity)
was observed to form in any of the 96 video sessions. The
pumping action, by contrast, fills the entire tongue in just 14
milliseconds. Here’s how it works, according to their new model:
--- Quote ---
> We suggest that while squeezing nectar off the tongue during
protrusion, the bird is collapsing the grooves and loading
elastic energy into the groove walls that will be subsequently
used to pump nectar into the grooves. The collapsed
configuration is conserved during the trip of the tongue across
the space between the bill tip to the nectar pool. Once the
tongue tips contact the nectar surface, the supply of fluid
allows the collapsed groove to gradually recover to a relaxed
cylindrical shape until the nectar has filled it completely;
hereafter, we refer to this previously undocumented mechanism as
‘expansive filling’.
--- End Quote ---
Flattened and Sealed
The tongue stays flattened and sealed, in short, until it hits
the nectar pool. Then, inside the fluid, the tongue’s twin
cylinders rapidly expand, pumping nectar up into the tongue as
it darts into the flower at speeds of a meter per second. As the
tongue is withdrawn, the lamellae then seal the cylinder tightly
shut for delivery into the bird’s mouth. This is a wonderful
dual mechanism that results in much more efficient food capture
in far less time.
--- Quote ---
> Fluid trapping is the predominant process by which
hummingbirds achieve nectar collection at small bill
tip-to-nectar distances, wherein tongue grooves are wholly
immersed in nectar, or when the nectar is found in very thin
layers. Expansive filling accounts for nectar uptake by the
portions of a hummingbird’s tongue that remain outside the
nectar pool. The relative contributions of the two synergistic
mechanisms(fluid trapping and expansive filling) to the rate and
volume of nectar ultimately ingested are determined by the
distance from the bill tip to the nectar surface during the
licking process.
--- End Quote ---
In other words, these two “synergistic mechanisms” give the
hummingbird the biggest possible nectar bang for the buck,
regardless of how deep the nectar pool is. The new model
explains how the tongue can fill up even in a short flower.
Since hummingbirds already “have remarkably high metabolic
rates, amazing speed and superb aeronautic control,” it is
essential they get the optimum return on investment of feeding
energy.
--- Quote ---
> All these traits result from the ability of hummingbirds to
feed on nectar efficiently enough to fuel an extreme lifestyle
out of a sparse, but energetically dense, resource. Therefore,
the way in which they feed on nectar determines the peaks and
span of their performance, and thus their behaviour (and
evolutionary trajectory
HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-040422164614-5342345.gif),<br
/>across a range of environmental axes.
--- End Quote ---
How Did Evolution Contribute?
HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-040622202747-14142220.bmp
But did evolutionary theory contribute anything to this study?
HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-050422145441-5641222.gif<br
/>The authors speculate briefly about “co-evolution” of flowers
and their pollinators, but do not offer any “trajectory” by
which a bird could evolve either of these mechanisms from
ancestors lacking them. How useful is it to offer up
evidence-free promissory notes like this?
--- Quote ---
> The new explanation of the mechanics of nectar uptake we
provide here suggests that physical constraints are the main
determinants of the relationship between pollinator type and
nectar concentration, and can guide us through alternative
hypotheses of hummingbird-flower coevolution.
--- End Quote ---
By contrast, they save their best lines for what might be termed
(though not by the authors ;)) intelligent design. The paper
begins:
--- Quote ---
> Pumping is a vital natural process, imitated by humans for
thousands of years. We demonstrate that a hitherto undocumented
mechanism of fluid transport pumps nectar onto the hummingbird
tongue.
--- End Quote ---
This implies a seamless connection between human design and
biological design. They conclude on the design theme:
--- Quote ---
> Our discovery of this elastic tongue micropump could inspire
applications, and the study of flow, in elastic-walled
(flexible) tubes in both biological and artificial systems.
--- End Quote ---
You see, not only does a design focus inspire 🕊️
study of biological systems, it leads to better designed
applications. Everyone can agree on this: hummingbirds are
inspiring!

Biologist Michael Denton’s new book, The Miracle of the Cell,
considers the scientific evidence for intelligent design from a
new perspective and at a new level. As with his previous books,
it’s a more fundamental view than that of all other ID
literature.
Here, Denton discusses his new book "The Miracle of the Cell"
with Eric Anderson in this Zoom event from Discovery Institute
in which people from around the world submitted questions to Dr.
Denton.
Denton makes the case that the directionality to the evolution
of the universe was foreseen — intended — from the Big Bang. Or
rather, from before it, because the design was actualized right
away. Since there was no nature and no time before the universe
came into being, it follows that the design must be of that a
transcendent mind, the “finger of God,” as Denton puts it.

Renowned author and biologist Michael Denton gives a new
expression to what he calls the “medieval synthesis” of
knowledge about life, now enjoying a “Reconquista” thanks to
modern science. In charming and lyrical yet rigorous fashion,
Denton reviews the intelligent design evidence detailed in his
books, including the most recent, The Miracle of the Cell. Join
him as he explores the myriad of ways nature is fit not just for
life, but for human life. Denton is author of the new book "The
Miracle of the Cell" (2020) as well as many other books such as
"Nature's Destiny," "Fire-Maker," "The Wonder of Water," and
"Evolution: Still a Theory in Crisis." You will never think of
nature in the same way after you watch this presentation!
Dr. Denton's new book The ☝🏻 Miracle of the Cell
HTML https://www.discovery.org/store/product/the-miracle-of-the-cell/<br
/>provides compelling evidence that long before life emerged on
our planet, the design of the carbon-based cell was foreshadowed
in the order of nature, in the exquisite fitness of the laws of
nature for this foundational unit of all life on Earth. Nowhere
is this fitness more apparent than in the properties of the key
atomic constituents of the cell. Each of the atoms of life —
including carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, as well as
several metal elements — features a suite of unique properties
fine-tuned to serve highly specific, indispensable roles in the
cell. Moreover, some of these properties are specifically fit
for essential roles in the cells of advanced aerobic organisms
like ourselves. Author Michael Denton is a Senior Fellow with

an MD from Bristol University and a PhD in biochemistry from
King’s College in London. His previous books include Evolution:
A Theory in Crisis and Nature’s Destiny: How the Laws of Biology
Reveal Purpose in the Universe. He has published his work in

Epistemology is the study of knowledge, its scope and limits.
And yet this most basic of studies is rarely dealt with today.
How do we really ''know''? How do we determine what is really
true, rather than that which is just traditionally accepted?
What are our tools for validation?
As we began in the very limited universe of our playpen, our
primary reliance on learning techniques was empirical: trial and
error. As our universe gradually expanded to include our room,
our home, our school, and our community, our primary
epistemological tools increasingly relied on external guidance,
qualified and validated by means of our internal processing. As
our universe of interest expands from our community to the
world, and ultimately to the cosmos itself, our tools
increasingly rely on external guidance rather than trial and
error! Qualifying our sources of information becomes
increasingly critical. Yet, what tools can we use to qualify our
sources of information?

Why the Round Eye Shape?
DIR By: AGelbert
Date: February 6, 2023, 3:25 pm
---------------------------------------------------------

HTML https://static.scientificamerican.com/sciam/cache/file/758387E7-9825-4DD6-9AEF1FC918F28C60_source.jpg
There is no doubt whatsoever that the eye shape of the fly is
more efficient at capturing light than a relatively flat eye
shape, which, along with its wings, enables it to survive long
enough to propagate its species. However, natural selection
being a subtractive process, it is irrational to think that said
subtractive process could randomly result in a more efficient
eye shape. The fly's eye shape is clearly an integral part of
the fly's overall design. In fact, no fly fossils (or flies in
"million year" ::) amber) have been found that don't have the
round eye shape (i.e. NO "transitional" fossils). Darwin thought
there was no Designer. The evidence argues otherwIse.
If you think Evolution is the best explanation for increasing
complexity and efficiency in living creatures, I suggest you
take a very close look at the owl skull, eye shape, eye socket
and neck vertebra. All these separate biological anatomical
parts function as a unit. They simply would not make sense in
the absence of a single one of the others. With eyes that are
fixed in the head, the head HAD to be able to turn so MANY
degrees. The vertebra HAD to be designed to allow normal blood
flow during extreme head rotation or there would be no advantage
to the fixed binocular eyes and 270 neck rotation. The absence
of any one of these "mutations" would have dangerously decreased
the owl's predatory efficiency if it had not "evolved"
simultaneously, which is statistically impossible in the time
frame Owl species had to "evolve".
As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a
wise reprover upon an obedient ear. -- Proverbs 25:12

The extraordinary multi-sensory powers of 🦉 owls provide

Owls have differential ear placement on their skulls
(one ear is higher than the other).
HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-060223170554-2171506.gif
It is absolutely laughable to claim that they "evolved" this
simply because, without it, combined with some other special
abilities only owls have among birds of prey, they would NOT be
able to pinpoint prey not visible beneath snow or foliage,
something they MUST be able to consistently do in order to
survive (owls hunt in conditions, mostly nocturnal, that other
birds of prey cannot hunt in).

HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-060223172516.jpeg
Owl eyes are huge in relation to their skull for a very specific
reason (to capture more light in the first place). But that
large eye size [glow=blue,2,300]works together[/glow] with
another light capturing ability unique to owl eyes among birds
of prey. That is, they have a lot more rods (needed for night
vision) than cones (needed for daylight color vision), so they
lose color vision, but have extremely powerful night vision.
There is much more to the OBVIOUSLY INTELLIGENT DESIGN of owl
anatomy and physiology, from the larger wings for vertical
takeoffs (for nest defence) and slow, almost hovering, flight
for hunting, to sound absorbing wing and body (owl feathers are
NOT wax covered - not waterproof like noisy duck wing feathers
-, which is the reason owl wings are, with the aid of a couple
of other specialized feather features, nearly soundless in
flight - no other bird can fly as quietly) quiet design to sound
capturing and concentrating facial feathers to 270 degree
pivoting head (including special vertebra that prevent blood
flow from being cut off during extreme head pivots).

HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-060223170556-21741000.gif
The vertebral arteries enter their necks higher up than in other
birds, introduced at the 12th vertebrae (when counted from the
top) instead of the 14th, which gives the vessels more slack and
room to breathe.
It is laughably illogical AND unscientific to claim that owls
"evolved" this set of sensory tools, one by one, at random,
while the "small eyed", "low rod count", "symmetrical ear
placement", "waterproof winged" and so on owls all "died off" as
the "survival of the fittest happy mutations" all came together
in some owls by good Darwinian luck to produce modern day owls.
WHY? Because, as a careful study of owl anatomy and physiology
irrefutably evidences, these abilities work successfully ONLY if
they work in concert. In order for all these sensory abilities
to work IN CONCERT, they had to have been SPECIFICALLY designed
to work as a[glow=teal,2,300] team[/glow]. The owl is a night
hunter that uses ALL of its specialized sensory equipment to
survive and thrive. Take away any one of these sensory tools and
its survival is in [glow=red,2,300]jeopardy[/glow].
It is a sad commentary on the willful denial of too many modern
day scientists of God's incredibly complex and beautiful
intelligent design of everything that lives in our biosphere in
general, and owls in particular, that they cling to Darwinian
nonsense.
Too many modern scientists just do not want to hear the truth
that NATURE was created by God.

To a an objective person, the study of owl anatomy and
physiology provides irrefutable proof that God created owls to
do what owls can do now, from the start, period.
