SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A 182.5-MW energy storage system in
Northern California that was designed and constructed in a
partnership between Tesla and Pacific Gas and Electric Company
is now operational, the utility announced April 18.
The system includes 256 Tesla Megapack battery units on 33
concrete slabs and has the capacity to store and dispatch up to
730 MWh of energy to the electrical grid at a maximum rate of
182.5 megawatts per hour during periods of high demand, PG&E
said in a statement.

Electricity grids all over the world are decarbonising at an
accelerating pace as fossil fuels are being outperformed by
renewables. One of the keys elements of that transformation will
be energy storage that can be discharged over a period of
several days so that power can always be guaranteed when there's
not so much sun or wind around. Iron-air ⚡ batteries look
like they may be the perfect solution. Now a US company called
[glow=green,2,300]FORM Energy[/glow] is on the cusp of
installing its first 10MW / 1 gigawatt hour iron-air energy
storage facility.

[move]Green Mountain Power in Vermont has a plan to add a
residential storage battery in the homes of all 270,000 of its
customers by 2030.[/move]
SNIPPETS:
Green Mountain Power has just filed a proposal with the state of
Vermont that it says could eliminate power outages for all
270,000 of its customers by 2030. The plan is to put many of its
power lines underground where they are safe from falling trees
and branches, strengthen the lines that have to remain above
ground so they can better resist powerful winds and heavier
snowfalls, and install a [glow=green,2,300]residential storage
battery[/glow] in the home of every residential customer.
👍🌞
Those [glow=green,2,300]batteries[/glow] can keep the ⚡
power on when outages do occur so people don’t have to live
without heat or 💧 water during a Vermont winter. Does
that last part surprise you? That’s because you have never lived
somewhere that depends on water from a well. When the lights go
out, so does the well pump, which can change your whole
perspective about how much we take running water for granted.
[center]
HTML https://cleantechnica.com/files/2023/10/GMP-CNBC-1536x639.jpg[/center]
Why is Green Mountain Power doing this? “We don’t want the power
to be off for our customers ever. People’s lives are on the
line. That is ultimately at the heart of why we’re doing what
we’re trying to do,” CEO Mari McClure told the New York Times.
... ...

The floods wiped out a beekeeper who happened to be a neighbor
of [glow=green,2,300]Bill McKibben[/glow], which inspired him to
research the cause of the flooding. He discovered that warm air
holds more moisture, which in turn leads to heavier than normal
rains which in turn lead to flooding in places where storm water
never used to be a problem. And the reason the air temperatures
are rising is, in large measure, due to the gigatons of carbon
dioxide and methane pumped into the atmosphere by burning fossil
fuels.
McKibben used what he learned to write a book called Oil And
Honey, which drew a bright line between the activities of the
[glow=red,2,300]fossil fuel companies[/glow] and the
[glow=red,2,300]destruction[/glow] of his neighbor’s bees.

Battery technology is developing at breath-taking speed all over
the world, but China still leads the way. Now they've created
batteries with such high energy density that they're using them
to develop a commercial aircraft with a range of 2,000 miles -
enough for most commuter flights in the US or Europe. So, has
battery chemistry reached yet another previously impossible
milestone?
