       [center]Twitter's problems: a roundup[/center]
Some unsolicited thoughts for the new ownership
       SNIPPET:
       1. The quote-tweet button
I’ve known Chris Wetherell for a long time, and he’s one of the
kindest human beings I’ve ever met. Among other things, he’s
also the inventor of the retweet button. A 2019 Buzzfeed article
chronicles how Chris saw the feature he invented — in
particular, the quote-tweet feature — immediately used to form
harassment mobs that terrorized some of his own friends:
       --- Quote ---
       > Jason Goldman, the head of product when Wetherell built the
retweet, said it’s a key source of Twitter’s problems today.
“The biggest problem is the quote retweet,” Goldman told
BuzzFeed News. “Quote retweet allows for the dunk. It’s the dunk
       mechanism.”…
       >
       > [T]he [quote-tweet] button…changed Twitter in a way Wetherell
and his colleagues didn’t anticipate. Copying and pasting made
people look at what they shared, and think about it, at least
for a moment. When the retweet button debuted, that friction
diminished. Impulse superseded the at-least-minimal degree of
thoughtfulness once baked into sharing. Before the retweet,
Twitter was largely a convivial place. After, all hell broke
       loose — and spread…
       >
       > As [the] Gamergate [controversy] unfolded [in 2014], Wetherell
noticed its participants were using the retweet to “brigade,” or
coordinate their attacks against their targets, disseminating
misinformation and outrage at a pace that made it difficult to
fight back. The retweet button propelled Gamergate, according to
an analysis by the technologist and blogger Andy Baio. In his
study of 316,669 Gamergate tweets sent over 72 hours, 217,384
       were retweets, or about 69%…
       >
       > Gamergate was a "creeping horror story for me," Wetherell
said. "It dawned on me that this was not some small subset of
people acting aberrantly. This might be how people behave. And
       that scared me to death.”
       >
       > Twitter, from that moment, became an “anger video game.”
       Retweets were the points.
       >
       --- End Quote ---
Gamergate is long gone, but the basic format that it pioneered —
big accounts using quote-tweets to call in mobs of followers to
attack someone they don’t like — became the standard on Twitter.
From liberals and leftists to conservatives and rightists to
nationalists and partisans of every conceivable cause, Twitter
has become a battlespace of warring gangs that use quote-tweet
       mobs as their artillery.
So far, the &#128176;&#128520; cautious people who run Twitter
have been unwilling to mess with this golden goose — quote-tweet
mobs are, presumably, a big reason why people stay so engaged
with Twitter. But Elon, being more of a bold experimenter, may
be willing and able to fix the platform’s core feature.

/>You wrote this accurate analysis of Twitter:
       --- Quote ---
       > "... , originally published at my old blog in 2017, I
explained what I think is the other core reason why Twitter is
such a bad influence on our society. Essentially, the platform
suffers from a gigantic negative selection bias — unlike
Instagram or Discord or Snapchat or even Facebook, Twitter is
biased toward the people with with the greatest inclination to
       shout and complain and fight."
       --- End Quote ---
Well said. My only issue is with your use of the word, "core". I
am convinced you need to go deeper to get to the core reason. As
you know, Twitter (i.e. 144 character limit from the getgo) was
DESIGNED for SHORT sentences. SHORT sentences lack nuance, depth
of thought and explanatory remarks about why a person thinks
       this or that.
SHORT sentences can be used for one liner jokes, but are MOST
used by vocabulary challenged, vulgar individuals for issuing
imperative commands and/or sharp sarcastic, angry, disdainful,
derogatory, abusive, threatening (etc. you get the idea)
emotionally charged remarks. This sort of communication, as you
noted, has a Selective Bias. The Selective Bias of Twitter is
for a QUIP (quip · a clever or witty remark or comment. · a
sharp, sarcastic remark; a cutting jest. · a quibble. · an odd
or fantastic action or thing.). Whether the originators of
Twitter want to admit it or not, the fact is that Twitter is the
ideal platform for a QUIP. Those who founded Twitter understood
the English language. They knew a short sentence structure quip
favoring platform would appeal to the baser elements in our
society. They actually designed Twitter so they could profit
from QUIP vulgarity. The designers of Twitter acted to undermine
ethics based communications in our society for the sake of
pecuniary profit. We, as responsible humans who want our society
to be ethic based, cannot gloss that over. A more accurate name
for Twitter would have been Quipper.
The core reason, and I believe there is only one, why twitter is
such a bad influence on our society is because Twitter has a
selective bias for the QUIP. But it certainly doesn't end
there. The Social Darwinist concern for unethical profits, no
matter deleterious to social cohesion said unethical profits
causes, is the CORE reason that intellimorons like the
originators of Twitter (Quipper) laugh all the way to the bank
while our society continues down the morally bankrupt, socially
       destructive path of unethical profiteering.
As long as people avoid facing the fact that the salient
socially destructive activity in human affairs is the embrace of
unethical profits, things wil get worse. Those running Twitter
are not "cautious"; they are ethics challenged Social Darwinist
       Greedballs. Musk is no different.
       It's the Social Darwinism, stupid!

       &#128226; Even with the low-balled COLA numbers, $32,000 1983
dollars EQUALS $95,155.34 in 2022 dollars! And THAT is just the
unfair taxation part! The LOSS of buying power massively above
and beyond the COLA "increase adjustments" since 1983 (i.e.
197.4%) add Government sponsored THEFT to the Government
sponsored unfair taxation. HOW? There are many, many goods and
services we all require to live. They are NOT "luxuries". They
are NOT "optional". THAT is what the Cost Of LIVING formula is
supposed to be all about, but after Greenspan and his pals in

In this post I will only point to one cost that affects
everybody, whether they own a home or not. That cost is the
Median Sales Price for New Houses Sold in the United States. If
you don't own, you have to rent. The more houses are valued at,
the more you will end up paying for rent. Yes, food, water,
clothing, transportation, etc. are all costs we cannot avoid,
but the Chapwood Index will show you everything you need to know
about that sine qua non basket of goods and services to evidence
the FACT that BLS COLA numbers are ridiculously low-balled. I
bring up housing cost, because THOSE are even MORE DELIBERATELY
(see below) low-balled :o than those items I just listed.
[center] SOURCE: Median Sales Price for New Houses Sold in the
       United States
  HTML https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MSPNHSUS[/center]
       February 1983: $ 73,800
       July 2022: $439,400
Do the REALITY BASED inflation math:
       $439,400 - $73,800 = $365,600
       $365,600 = [(365,600/73,800) x 100] = % increase of $73,800 =
       495.4% INCREASE
197.4% BLS CPI Published minus 495.4% PRESENT = 298% LESS than
       REAL INFLATION
The REAL INFLATION in the USA is Two Hundred and Ninety Eight
percent MORE than the BLS published inflation. What that means
for a person on Social Security is that they have been ROBBED of
the 298% INCREASE they were entitled to had the BLS not
Greenspan gamed the CPI "Owners Equivalent Rent" numbers to
       provide a "wealth effect" ILLUSION.
Yes, it is hard to believe, but for a Social Security pension of
$1,000 a month in 1983 to have kept up with REAL inflation, it
would now have to be $4,954 a month. YET, that $1,000 a month
       1983 pension is at $1,974 a month. &#129402;
For anyone that is getting cross eyed with the math, my point is
that this example (which applies to ALL Social Security
pensioners, more or less, but usually MORE SO) means that
pension of $1,974 is getting SHORT CHANGED
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-050422182057.gif<br
       />by $2,980&#10071;
Now I hope you see why all Social Security pensions need to be
DOUBLED, at MINIMUM, AND not subject to taxes below, at MINIMUM
(i.e. using the BLS published 197.4% increase from 1983 to 2022
COLA numbers), any amount less than $95,168.

intelligent and well educated does not equate to being ethical.
That is the false equivalence that Capitalist CON ARTISTS love
       to push 24/7.
Capitalists, being egocentric, self worshipping greedballs by
nature, have a historical aversion to cause and effect reality,
preferring fantasies (e.g. "enlightened" self interest,
Capitalism is "good" for the Country, etc.) to hide the fact
that their only goal in life is to achieve price control of some
product in order price gouge/coerce we-the-people to pay
whatever their RIGGED "supply and demand" morally bankrupt
       economic system facilitates.
"Gandhi rejects the Adam Smith notion of human nature as
motivated by self-interest and brute needs and returns us to our
spiritual dimension with its impulses for nonviolence, justice
and equality. He exposes the fallacy of the claim that everyone
can be rich and successful provided they work hard. He points to
the millions who work themselves to the bone and still remain
hungry." -- Martin Luther King Jr.
The TRUTH about the MO of Capitalists, that they privately
celebrate and publicly deny, is CLEARLY spelled out by Gandhi:
       Gandhi's Seven Sins:
       1. Wealth without work
       2. Pleasure without conscience
       3. Knowledge without character
       4. Commerce without morality
       5. Science without humanity
       6. Worship without sacrifice
       7. Politics without principle
That is why Capitalists diligently work to spread, and glorify,
the myths about "Enlightened self Interest" (i.e. GREED IS
GOOD), "Supply and Demand" (i.e. RIG THE SUPPLY IN ORDER To
PRICE GOUGE FOR GREED IS GOOD PROFIT), and of course the
glorification of their morally bankrupt hero's baloney about the
Wealth of the "Nations" (i.e. CAPITALIST PROPERTY HOLDERS IN
       THOSE NATIONS AND NOBODY ELSE!).
"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." --
       Aldous Huxley
The following graphic does not actually require the word,
"Vulture". There is NO "socially constructive" form of
       Capitalism.

       SNIPPETS:
You want to fix the world with finance? Then fix this: wages'
share of a financialized, globalized, speculative-bubble
       dependent economy have been [shadow=red,left]falling[/shadow]
       for [glow=red,2,300][color=maroon]decades[/glow][/color]. Fix
this and you really will change the world. Anything less changes
       nothing.
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-090422150144.png<br
       />... ...
There are three false assumptions at the heart of
       blockchain/crypto:
       1. We can all get stupidly rich while changing the world for the
       better. (The Internet model)
       2. Blockchain/crypto is "open to everyone" because anyone
earning fiat currency can use that to buy crypto.
Getting stupidly rich from being an early investor and
front-running speculative bubbles doesn't change the world.
       Confusing
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-090822151052-17321038.png<br
/>getting rich with "changing the world" doesn't change the
       world.
As for "democratizing finance:" those without capital and no way
to save up appreciable capital are left out
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-050422182057.gif<br
       />of
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-040622210509-141844.gif<br
/>speculative assets. The already-wealthy have the means to jump
on the bandwagon and so they end up owning the lion's share of
       the new hot asset.
In this way, cryptos are no different from all the other asset
classes dominated by the already-wealthy. A relative handful of
early investors and issuers of cryptos became billionaires, the
&#128520; already-wealthy piled in and the bottom 90% were left
       to trade high-priced crumbs.
       3. Fixing finance will fix the world. Just as those holding
hammers see nails that can be pounded down, those steeped in the
abstract world of speculation and finance think their expertise
in making "money" is all that's needed to fix whatever is broken
       in the world.
The reality is that finance has broken the world's ability to
       adapt by pushing wealth-power
       [shadow=red,left]inequality[/shadow] to
       [glow=red,2,300]extremes[/glow] that are
       [glow=red,2,300]breaking down[/glow] economies and societies.

  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-040622202719-1406786.gif<br
/>Finance looks at scarcities--artificially created by cartels
       and
monopolies, or the real-world scarcities of depletion--as
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-040622210450-1415528.gif<br
/>"opportunities" for profiteering. Governance and regulation
       are
&#128520; "opportunities" to distort public policy to benefit
the few at the expense of the public good.
  HTML https://soberthinking.createaforum.com/gallery/soberthinking/1-050422142505.gif

[S12 E45] The Terminal Crises of Global Capitalism
In this week's show, Prof. Wolff presents updates on students'
solidarity with workers at Smith College; US car industry
manipulates supply/demand to inflate prices, profits; Teamsters
strike, solidarity defeat Sysco Systems; Starbucks provokes its
250 unionized stores, and why rising wages do not "cause"
inflation. In the second half of the show, Wolff interviews
Prof. William I. Robinson on global capitalism and its multiple
       crises he calls "terminal."

"Exactly a year ago, in November 2021, during peak crypto
craziness, the market cap of all of the many thousands of crypto
tokens combined, from bitcoin on down, hit $3 trillion globally.
Today, the market cap is at about $850 billion, so that’s down
by 72%. In other words, $2.1 trillion have vanished in 12
